What happened to Dr Tuckey Hayes? He used to have an office at Hill Avenue in Knoxville Tennessee doing illegal abortions here also. I went with a friend back in 1975 where she had an abortion there. I will never forget it. We were only 15.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure, anon.
ReplyDeleteCan you tell us your story?
He lost his Dea license to dispense narcotics in 1983 for running a script mill writing narcotic cough medicine to drug addicts.
ReplyDeleteIn the late 80s or early 90s a well to do West Knoxville woman wanted a quicky secret abortion. Best I remember he did it on his kitchen table and couldn't even write her a RX for antibiotics. She got a nasty infection, the secret was out and she sued him. He died in 1992.
Also earlier, he was busted for performing a"abortions" on women who were not pregnant. Knoxville Police Dept ran a sting on him & caught him red handed.
As to the illegal prescription mill? I'm still a drug addict nearly 30 years later. My recreational use sky rocketed to full blown addiction with his help. I remember Kentucky Derby day he sat in his car writing the 'scripts. He never even opened the doors to his clinic. By this time his patients were 85% male at his Womens Clinic of Knoxville.
Wow, John! Do you have either links, or other references I can use? I'd like to do a write up about that.
ReplyDeleteMost all of this is from my memories from the past 25 years. The Sting was conducted in the mid to late '70s. The kitchen table abortiion was from 1988 to 1991 if I remember right. The stories were printed in the Knoxville News Sentinel & The Knoxville Journal. Both have years of editions of microfilm at the Lawson McGhee library on Church st in downtown Knoxville. A more humane thing than RXing me powerful narcotics would have been to put a bullet in my head that first day.
ReplyDeleteNo links but believe me, I can remember the circumstances pretty darn well.

Use the word Tuckey in the message header & I'll consider talking w/you on the phone. I've got a few more stories about Dr. Hayes.
actually it is us441south@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteI just remembered something else. He must have been running some kind of artificial insemination service never mentioned anywhere else.
ReplyDeleteHis building was an old turn of the century boarding house looking place. One day I went there to get an RX and they put me in a waiting room I'd always thought was a broom closet or something. I started prowling around in there looking to see what was what. I open a cabinet and it had some little plastic cups, some hand lotion, tissues and some recent porn. I took one of the magazines out and made sure to be looking at it when he came in. I was hoping he'd offer me some money or drugs for sperm but he never batted an eye. I was out of there and on the way to the pharmacy in a jiffy. With the help of Tuckey it was at this time I became a full blown opiate addict who still suffers with it today. This was 1982.
