So, basically, unless an abortionist seriously injured or killed a woman, did s/he pretty much operate with impunity, since those who knew didn't tell? I suppose there were crackdowns from time to time, just like in prostitution rings, crack houses, or (during Prohibition) speakeasies.Kathyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10118292622669944944noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8395646.post-21873081833852543422010-03-07T09:47:07.432-05:002010-03-07T09:47:07.432-05:00From what I understand they were typically conside...From what I understand they were typically considered victims. The main thrust for this "victim" status, though, seemed to be legal. You can't convict somebody of a crime based on uncorroborated accomplice testimony, but you can on uncorroborated *victim* testimony. So if the woman is considered an accomplice you're pretty much screwed when you try to get a conviction based on her complaints. (This may be part of the reason abortion advocates try to insist that if abortion is recriminalized, the woman must be treated as an accomplice; that will reduce the state's ability and willingness to prosecute the abortionists, because it is harder to go to trial if the woman is an accomplice rather than a victim.)Christina Duniganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04785550737493692252noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8395646.post-23847514987840788852010-03-07T09:28:49.360-05:002010-03-07T09:28:49.360-05:00Do you know if any women were ever arrested for ha...Do you know if any women were ever arrested for having an abortion performed on themselves, or was it only the abortionist and any accomplices?

You may not be able to answer the question, since you typically only deal with women who died, and thus could not have been imprisoned for procuring an abortion, but this made me curious, since the pro-abortion lobby screech about women being arrested should abortion become illegal. Just curious if their so-called fears have any basis in past reality, or if they're just fear-mongering.Kathyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10118292622669944944noreply@blogger.com
