August 27: Illegal in 1909 and Undetermined in 1970
On August 27, 1909, homemaker Anna Dennin, age 23, died in her Chicago home on Hamilton Avenue from an abortion. Dr. Emma Maycke of Belmont Avenue was held by the coroner's jury and indicted for felony murder. Dr. Maycke said that she had only been treating Anna after somebody else had perpetrated abortion. The source documents don't indicate that the case went to trial.
