Killed-by-choice tells the story of "Maggie," a woman whose doctor evidently decided that aborting Maggie's baby was medically necessary to save Maggie's life or prevent permanent physical harm. Thus, even though abortion is generally illegal, the physician had leeway to legally make this dubious medical judgement.
The state records don't indicate why the doctor believed that Maggie's life was in danger, why he believed that aborting the baby was the best way to protect his patient, what stage of gestation the baby had reached before he or she was aborted, and what method was used to abort Maggie's baby.
Other women who have died from "maternal indications" abortions include:
- Anjelica Durate, who died after a doctor-recommended abortion in 1991
- Allegra Roseberry was pushed into an abortion in order to obtain experimental cancer treatment.
- Barbara Hoppert died after an abortion recommended due to a congenital heart problem.
- Christin Gilbert died after an abortion George Tiller held was justified on grounds of maternal health.
- Erika Peterson died in 1961 when her doctors obtained her husband's permission to perform a "therapeutic" abortion.
- "Molly" Roe died in 1975 when her doctors made the dubious decision to perform a saline abortion to improve her chances of surviving a lupus crisis.
