Criminal abortionist pleads no contest, faces likely prison

Unlicensed Abortion Center Owner Pleads No Contest, Likely Headed to Prison

Los Angeles, CA (LifeNews.com) -- The owner of a chain of abortion centers in California entered a no contest plea on Monday to charges of pretending to be a physician and doing abortions without a medical license. Bertha Pinedo Bugarin, 48, pleaded to seven felony counts in Los Angeles Superior Court.

Bugarin was ordered to pay $7,800 in restitution to 16 former patients whose lives she put at risk by doing abortions on them or giving them the dangerous RU 486 abortion drug without having medical training.

One woman had to be hospitalized three times from complications of an abortion Bugarin attempted, which led to the premature birth of a baby who died three hours later.

Bugarin (pictured) faces up to 10 years in state prison for the charges. She faces an additional possible nine years for charges she faces in San Diego. Bugarin operated a chain of eleven abortion mills in southern California under the name Clinica Medica Para La Mujer De Hoy (Medical Clinic for Today's Woman). The chain has had trouble enough with the quack abortionists hired legally, and one of them has been closed by the state. The others are still being run by abortionist Nolan Jones, who has bounced from one seedy abortion mill to another over the years, and whose license is currently delinquent.

Nicholas Braemer, the medical director of the abortion centers, surrendered his medical license under pressure in 2000 after Operation Rescue exposed his numerous botched abortions and other problems.

He was replaced as medical director by Laurence Reich, a convicted sex offender, who lost his medical license in 2006 for continued episodes of sexual abuse against his abortion patients.
