The little guy's cochlear implant was just activated. What's really amazing is that he immediately realizes that the sound is coming from Mommy, and how he responds.

So, how do cochlear implants work - will they help many people with profound hearing loss/deafness, or only a few? Have these been available for a while or are they a new item?
According to Wikipedia, Cochlear implants work by coverting sounds into neurological waves and directly conducting them into the auditory nerve. Cochlear implants are used for severe to profound sensorineural hearing impairment.
I'm glad this little guy was able to get diagnosed and treated young.
