July 2, 1928: Self-Induced in New York

Today is the anniversary of a more stereotypical, but less typical, pre-legalization abortion death. According to New York death records, 38-year-old homemaker Esther Vinegard Stallman, of  Hollywood Avenue in the Bronx, died of septicemia following an attempted self-induced abortion. Esther, an immigrant from Russia, had been in the first month of pregnancy.

According to probate records, Esther left behind her husband, Samuel, three daughters, and a son.
