Searches: Severson, Susan, saline, Smith, Sidney -- suicidal?

  • Meryl Severson is the Planned Parenthood abortionist who performed the abortion that led to a Nebraska woman needing a hysterectomy. Of course, Planned Parenthood has their defense lined up: "She kept squirming in pain, we told her to lay still, and it's not like this is her first abortion -- it's not like she's Snow White, if you get what we're saying." Yeah, PP, we hear you. Blame the victim.

  • Susan Hamilton was murdered by her husband, abortionist John Baxter Hamilton (pictured), in their Oklahoma home on Valentine's Day of 2001. In a bizarre coincidence, the other abortionist I know of who murdered his wife -- Joe Bills Reynolds -- was also in Oklahoma.

  • Saline fetus: My favorite saline abortion fetus is Gianna Jessen, who refused to die and now refuses to be silenced. About 500 babies a year survived saline abortions during the procedure's heyday in the 1970s and early 1980s. For the less fortunate fetuses, who did not survive, you can see pictures here and here. Abortion workers dubbed them "candy apple babies" because the saline ate away the outer layer of skin, leaving the baby a bright red color.

  • Laura Hope Smith died on the abortion table at Woman Health Center in Massachusetts this past September. Her abortionist was Rapin Osathanondh.

  • Sidney Laughlin is the abortionist got caught performing abortions in his bedroom and tossing the fetuses in the trash. His staff said he disinfected medical instruments in the dishwasher.

  • "laminaria abortion suicidal" -- Actually, no. But Nikki told Focus on the Family that Ronald Kuseski at Mayfair in Colorado threatened to have her locked up on a psych ward as "suicidal" if she refused to follow through with an abortion after they'd inserted laminaria. (Mayfair is the National Abortion Federation member where Christi Stile was left in permanently incapacitated.) Douglas A. Karpen, the man who performed the fatal abortion on Denise Montoya, once lamented at a NAF seminar about women who change their minds about the abortion after the laminaria are inserted. The prolifers outside the clinic would talk to the women and would take them to obstetricians who would remove the laminaria and help them continue the pregnancies, and the women were wanting refunds. The solution proposed was to make them sign a statement prior to inserting the laminaria promising that they would under no circumstances have the laminaria removed, that they were promising to continue with the abortion even if they changed their minds. One of Karpen's patients gave birth to a premature baby who died six months later, after Karpen inserted laminaria and refused to remove it. Another NAF member, Womancare of Detroit, told Tamia Russel and her mother that she'd die if the laminaria were removed and the abortion aborted, so to speak. Tamia trusted them, proceeded with the abortion, and died. Oh, but it's the prolife CPCs that lie to women and deny them factual information to make a choice!
  • Search: Harold Walba, punked by Planned Parenthood

  • Harold Walba is one of the people who signed the Planned Parenthood petition trying to shut down prolife pregnancy centers. Walba said "Although we often differ on political issues, I hope we are on the same side when it comes to deception of woman." Actually, Harold, you and PP are not on the same side, if you disapprove of deceiving women.

First of all, the entire petition campaign was based on a hoax orchestrated by Planned Parenthood.

Here it is, folks, the CPC in Indiana that shares a parking lot with a Planned Parenthood. Oooooh! Does it look like it's trying to look like Planned Parenthood? And look in the background on the right side of the picture. There's a blue sign. You can't quite make it out. But in the picture below, you can just make it out.

There it is -- the Planned Parenthood.

This story just unravels faster than a moth-eaten sweater. Upon further investigation, there were no reports of any such incidents with the Indianapolis police, or in Marion County courts.

    It never freaking happened, people!

But people who don't realize that Planned Parenthood can't be trusted just pass on the story like chlymidia, all the while nodding like so many bobble-head dolls.

Don't they ever get tired of being lied to?
  • Search: Stacy Zallie

Stacy Zallie was the New Jersey college student who committed suicide after her abortion. Her family has launched the Stacy Zalie Foundation to offer support to other post-abortion women, to prevent them from taking their lives.

This, of course, has hardcore abortion fanatics gnashing their teeth. How dare a grieving family try to make "choice" look bad! How dare this grieving father point out what public health officials already know! How dare he try to prevent other women and girls from taking their lives, like his daughter did, like Arlin della Cruz did, like Sandar Kaiser did, like Carol Cunningham did, like Sandra Roe did, like Laura Grunas did, like Haley Mason did.

How dare this grieving dad note that women who have aborted are at higher risk of suicide than women who have given birth or who have not been pregnant.

How dare he let things like reality and compassion get in the way of the beauty and wonder of "choice"?

But then, these women who are attacking George Zallie are hardcore abortion advocates. If they lack compassion for their own children, how can they have compassion for any grieving parent?

Here's one we can agree on: Give women the choice

ADF files brief in support of lay midwife facing charges for assisting Amish woman during childbirth

These midwives are trained professionals who have a better safety record than hospitals. Granted, this is in part because they refer high-risk patients to physicians, and this drives the hospital's complication and death rate up. But if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

    Ectopic survival

I went looking because of a search, and found these cases:

  • Rare baby survives outside womb: Montreal doctor, CBC News Tuesday, August 12, 2003: Dionne Grant, a Jamaican tourist, was in Montreal when she had to go to SacrĂ©-Coeur Hospital for an emergency c-section, performed by Dr. Robert Sabbah, head of obstetrics and gynecology. He said, "When I opened the cavity I quickly discovered that the uterus was not like it was supposed to be. As soon as I explored the abdominal cavity I noticed there were feet in the cavity just floating around. So as fast as I could I took out the baby." The placenta had attached to the top of Dionne's uterus, this providing a good blood supply to the baby.

  • Here is an old medical journal article, ADVANCED EXTRAUTERINE PREGNANCY, Bulletin of the Hong Kong Medical Association, vol. 22, 1970. Case 1 was a 32-year-old mother of one, in 1956. "The extrauterine pregnancy was not diagnosed until 38th week when foetal movements could clearly be seen transmitted through the thin abdominal wall." She had no other symptoms that anything was amiss with her pregnancy. An X-ray showed that the baby was oddly situated, with an abnormally curved spine. She was immediately admitted to the hospital, where a 3,430 gram baby girl was delivered. The omentum (apron of fat covering the intestines) was covering the pregnancy, which seemed to have arisen in the right fallopian tube. There were only minor adhesions within the mother's abdomen. The mother recovered well, and had a successful normal pregnancy the following year. The baby was perfectly healthy.

Case 2 was a 41-year-old mother of two, who had slight bleeding at 16 weeks, and intermittent pain for four months. She was admitted to the hospital at 27 weeks. Her pain subsided after a week of hospitalization. The fetus could be easily felt through the woman's abdominal wall, as could the empty uterus. The patient refused immediate surgery, hoping to perserve her child's life. She remained hospitalized. At 32 weeks she experienced sudden, acute abdominal pain. She was delivered of a 2,010 gram infant. The placenta had attached to the back wall of her pelvic cavity and the right broad ligament. The sac, placenta, and right fallopian tube and ovary were removed, with minimal blood loss. the mother recovered well. The baby had some facial asymmetry due to the unusual pressures placed on her from being gestated outside the womb.

    Case 3
was a 33-year-old mother of four, admitted to the hospital at 36 1/2 weeks because of recurring abdominal pain. The fetus was in breach presentation, but attempts to turn the baby by maniuplating it through the abdominal wall were unsuccessful. An X-ray revealed that the baby was lying transversely. The doctors decided to perform a c-section, whereupon they learned that the baby was actually behind the mother's uterus. The baby weighed 2,920 grams. The placenta had attached to the back of the mother's reproductive organs, which were removed. The mother recovered well and the baby was healthy.

Case 4 wasa 43-year-old mother of 8 who had been having abdominal pain since 12 weeks, and was admitted to the hospital at 26 weeks. Her uterus was displaced by the fetus, which was in her abdomen. Two days after she was admitted, she experienced sudden acute abdominal pain, so doctors performed surgery to remove the baby, a girl weighing 1,040 grams. Blood loss was minimal. The mother recovered well, and the baby had no problems other than prematurity. Sadly, she developed a respiratory infection and died at age 34 days.

  • Three typical criminal abortion deaths

On November 30, 1874, Mrs. Mary Dix died at her Chicago home from complications of a criminal abortion performed there. Dr. W. F. Aiken was arrested and charged with murder.

On November 30, 1936, 34-year-old Sophie Peterson died at Chicaog's Mercy Hospital from complications of an abortion performed October 27 in the Chicago office of Dr. Frederick Springe. Springe was indicted for felony murder by a grand jury on December 15.

On November 30, 1927, 22-year-old Lucille van Iderstine died in the Chicago office of Dr. Emil Gleitsman, from an abortion that had been performed on her that day. Gleitsman was indicted for felony murder in Lucille's death on January 15, 1928.

All three of these fatal abortions were typical of illegal abortions in that they were performed by physicians.

    Are these the same guy?

I re-read my post about the guy who slipped his girlfriend two abortion mickeys. His name? Manishkumar Patel. I thought the name looked familiar. I found this in my files:

PATEL, Dr. Nareshkumar Gandalal. I can see somebody getting the name wrong. Especially if they were trying to read somebody else's handwriting.

  • Suit by Lakisha M. alleged: abortion by Patel June 16, 1994; "typically two medical instruments would be implanted one day prior to an abortion being performed, but ... Defendant decided he would do the abortion that same day" because the pregnancy was further advanced than originally believed; discharged, advised to return in 2 weeks; pain, blood loss, loss of hearing, expelling fetal tissues; lack of informed consent; required additional D&C; Patel denied injury to Lakisha. (Oklahoma County District Court Case No. CJ 94 5938-65)

  • Article says Patel was reprimanded by medical licensing board for perforating uterus during abortion. (USA Today 4-17-92, The Daily Oklahoman 5-28-93, Dallas Morning News 6-11-93; 1463 - The Sunday Oklahoman 7-5-92)

  • Articles say Patel admitted to dumping and attempting to burn at least 60 fetuses described by medical examiner as "in various states of dismemberment...and preservation" in a field.(Medical Board Case No. 87-7-514; USA Today 4-16-92, 4-17-92, The Daily Oklahoman 5-28-93, Dallas Morning News 6-11-93; The Sunday Oklahoman 7-5-92)

  • Reprimanded by medical board of Oklahoma for abandoning patient E.S.B. June 10. 1989 after surgical procedure in order to take friend to airport; "left patient in post-operative condition in the treatment room under anesthesia, and the patient's blood pressure dropped and the patient required emergency medical treatment." (Medical Board Case No. 87-7-514)

  • Reprimanded by Okalahoma medical board in 1989 for failure to comply with regulations regarding prescribing and monitoring controlled substances. (Medical Board Case No. 87-7-514)

  • Articles state Patel settled out-of-court in case alleging his transfer of woman in labor caused death of infant. (USA Today 4-17-92, The Daily Oklahoman 5-28-93, Dallas Morning News 6-11-93; The Sunday Oklahoman 7-5-92)

  • Article states patient Ashley T. accused Patel of asking her to meet with him to discuss her mental condition following abortion, then tried to grab and kiss her. Faced criminal charges, oral sodomy and sexual battery, for allegedly trying to kiss and fondle an abortion patient who was nude and sedated on an examining table March 25, 1993; she awoke from anesthesia to find him attempting "to force her to sodomize him;" she said he then drove her home and called several times "to determine if she remembered anything about the incident;" she taped the conversations; police siezed her medical records, found folded on Patel's desk rather than in her chart. (USA Today 4-17-92, The Daily Oklahoman 5-28-93, Dallas Morning News 6-11-93; Daily Oklahoman 5-28-93)

  • Article says Patel was ordered in 1989 to pay damages of $240,000 to 15-year old girl injured in abortion attempt.(USA Today 4-17-92, The Daily Oklahoman 5-28-93, Dallas Morning News 6-11-93; Daily Oklahoman 5-28-93)

  • Article says two female employees complained of unwelcome sexual advances, sexual harassment. (USA Today 4-17-92, The Daily Oklahoman 5-28-93, Dallas Morning News 6-11-93)

  • Reprimanded by Ohio board 1992 due to action taken in Oklahoma. (QD)

Granted, the abortion mickey Patel was in Wisconsin, and the abortion-botching, fetus-dumping, obstetric-malpracticing, pervy abortionist was in Oklahoma, but it's a free country. He's allowed to move around.

Can anybody in Wisconsin look into this?
  • Searches: Nasty, EMW, Womancare, and how it's done

  • EMW abortion clinic in Louisville, Kentucky: Here is info on a lawsuit filed against them on behalf on an underage girl that they performed an abortion on against her mother's express wishes, against medical advice, and against a restraining order -- resulting in the girl being hospitalized for sepsis. Their security guard got caught raping women on the premises after hours. And of course, EMW is a member of the National Abortion Federation.

  • Another search for "nasty abortion". As compared to nice ones? How about these cases: Jammie Garcia drowned in her own feculent fluids because her abortionist had shoved her fetus into her bowl and left it there to block things up; Carolina Gutierrez (pictured) endured the amputation of her gangrenous limbs in a futile attempt to save her from abortion-related sepsis; Lawson Akpolonu was raping patients in his filthy clinic -- something Diane Sawyer considered "a non-story" when we tipped her off; abortionist James Park's method of disposing of late-term fetuses -- running them through a meat grinder -- was enough to make fellow abortionist Curts Stover lose his lunch. There are these guys -- they're pretty nasty, with the one guy doing abortions at home and tossing the mangled fetuses in the trash and so forth. We have some guys dumping fetuses down the garbage disposal. Then there's this place, where employees complained to the state that their boss was eating the fetuses. What happened to this woman during her safe and legal abortion is pretty nasty. Keep coming, I've got more.

  • Womancare. There are these guys in Detroit; that's where 15-year-old Tamia Russell (pictured) died after an illegal third-trimester abortion performed after she'd changed her mind. Chivon Willams also died after an abortion there. And they're a National Abortion Federation member facility, of course! Then there's the California Womancare that employed Phillip Rand, who aborted wanted babies as well as unwanted ones.

  • How do doctors kill a baby in an abortion? They suck them out through a tube, or they pull them apart with forceps, or they give the mother drugs that cut off the baby's blood supply, or they stick a needle in its heart or brain and give a lethal injection, or they drag it out feet-first then stab it in the skull and suck its brains out.
  • Planned Parenthood: always ready with an excuse

Defendants deny malpractice in abortion suit

Planned Parenthood's defense in a malpractice case, in which a woman ended up losing 4 litres of blood and needing a hysterectomy:

    1. Hey, she knew there might be complications. (Yeah -- and every drunk driver could say, "Hey, when you get on the road you know you might be in a wreck.")

    2. It's her fault for not staying still. (How about you provide adequate pain medication? I'd like to see their lawyer lie perfectly still while somebody shoves sharp things into his private parts and roots around.)

    3. This was her SECOND abortion! (Popularly known as the "slut defense" -- saying that she was some sort of skanky ho who desrved what happened to her. A deplorable strategy typically used by rapists. And abortionists.)

That said -- Yes, a perforated uterus is a known complication. Which is why the physician should be prepared to treat it before it becomes life-threatening and leads to a hysterectomy.

    Man slips girlfriend abortion mickeys

Married man accused of slipping abortion drug to girlfriend

A married man accused of slipping an abortion drug to his pregnant girlfriend is expected in Outagamie County Circuit Court today.

Sheriff's investigators say the man has admitted giving RU-486 to the woman without her knowledge by putting it in something she consumed.

Captain Michael Jobe (JOHB) says the woman became suspicious in September after her second miscarriage in less than a year. So, she sent some of her blood to a California lab, which confirmed the presence of the abortion drug.

She then filed for a restraining order against the 34-year-old man and went to sheriff's investigators.

Sheriff's officials say charges against Manishkumar Patel could include attempted first-degree intentional homicide of an unborn child, burglary, stalking and violating a restraining order. But prosecutors won't say what charges they intend to file.

The prolifers will all probably be unified on this one: The guy needs to get prosecuted on two counts of homicide. I imagine the prochoicers will be split -- ranging from "In her mind it was a baby, so it's homicide" (the smallest group) to "He gave her a drug without her consent. It's assault. Treat it like slipping somebody any other mickey" (the biggest group).

And gee, thanks, abortion lobby, for all your hard work to bring abortion drugs to this country and make this possible.

Here's one more thought: How do we prevent this sort of thing? I'd say that we need to have tight control on these drugs, and anybody who dispenses them to anybody other than a woman who has requested them and gone through screening and informed consent needs to be charged as an accomplice in the homicide of the unborn baby.

If "choice" is about the woman's right to decide if it's a baby or a blob, then she ought to have the right to have the rat-bastard who kills her baby against her wishes locked up and the key thrown away.

Searches: phony docs, perforated bowel, and more

  • "how do women abort their baby with coat hanger" -- By and large, they didn't. About 90+ percent of them found a doctor to do the abortion, either under a loophole in the law, by using a ruse such as passing it off as some other surgery, or illegally. About 8 percent found a midwife or other person with medical training, who typically was trained in abortion by a physician and had a physician for back-up or to provide medications. About 2 percent resorted to people with no medical training, which could anything from a rank amateur with no abortion experience to the Jane collective in Chicago which was trained by physicians and had backup physicians to provide care for complications. The famed "coathanger abortion" was rare, and more typical of women with mental health problems.

  • Davina Chambers is the British woman found herself staring at the face of her aborted baby, which she had passed into the toilet. This is not unheard of in the US.

  • Vanessa Preston was the 22-year old preacher's wife who bled to death due to disseminated intravascular coagulopathy triggered by an abortion performed by Curtis Boyd at Fairmount, a National Abortion Federation member clinic in Dallas, Texas.

  • Perforated bowel. A National Abortion Federation abortionist describes his "cross your fingers" method for dealing with bowel perforations. Then there was this case in Michigan, involving an illegal 28-week abortion performed by Dr. Jose Gilberto Higuera. Steve Brigham perforated a woman's bowel during an abortion performed in his New York office. Marcia L. suffered a perforated bowel during an abortion performed by Phillip Rand. Fatal, during an abortion: Moris Helen Herron and Sharon Hamptlon (pictured, with son Curtis) in California, Ellen Williams in Florida, Julie Roe in New York, Sharon Davis in New Mexico, and Jammie Garcia in Texas, off the top of my head.

  • "pretending to be doctor illegal" Alicia Hanna was passing herself off as a doctor when she performed the fatal abortion on Angela Sanchez. Barbara Lofton was passing herself off as a doctor at Maryland's notorious Hillview abortion mill, where Suzanne Logan and Debra Gray underwent their fatal abortions -- performed, ironically, by Gideon Kioko, who actually was a physician. I know there are other cases but my brain is fried at the moment from doing report cards at work, so I can't remember any of them.

  • Kieron Nisbet was one of the unlicensed people busted for illegally performing abortions at A Gyn of Miramar, Inc., an abortion clinic located in Miramar, Florida, now known as Miramar Women’s Center.
  • Anniversary: Illegal abortion death, perpetrator unknown

Seventeen-year-old Miss Dorothy Jasinski was brought to St. Mary's Hospital in Chicago by two unidentified women on November 17, 1930. Dorothy was treated there until her death on November 29. The coroner determined that Dorothy had died from an abortion performed in Michigan City, Indiana, the day she'd been brought to the hospital. The coroner recommended identification of the person or persons responsible, and his or their arrest on charges of murder.

Searches: saline, seth, quackery, and death

  • Jennifer Vickery, age 26, is one of the women who stepped forward afer news broke of a woman who nearly died when a nurse at Summit Medical Center of Alabama tried to abort her term pregnancy with a dose of RU-486. When Jennifer learned of the woman's case, "I was scared for my life. I was at a loss for words. It was crazy." At the time, Jennifer was running a fever after complications of a surgical abortion she'd undergone at Summit on May 4. She had a follow-up appointment scheduled. Should she keep it? But the clinic was shut down. Jennifer said that she'd been rushed into the abortion. An ultrasound had been performed, and she was told she was 8 weeks pregnant. "They rushed me back so quick and started giving me medication, and I didn't have time to think about it. I didn't feel like I had time to think about nothing. When I got there, they had me start filling out papers. They said, `We want you to do it today, because we have a doctor here.'" Summit is the National Abortion Federation member clinic where Malachy Dehenre (pictured) performed the fatal abortion on Leigh Ann Alford.

  • Saline abortions. The dead in America began piling up in New York and California even before Roe. Saline and other instillation abortions continued to kill women after Roe, but fell out of favor in the late 1980s due to the dreaded complication: live births.

  • Emmanuel Brandeis managed to screw up an IV for an abortion, resulting in the woman's fingers going gangrenous and having to be amputated. He also aborted at San Vicente Hospital, a notorious abortion mill that was bought out by National Abortion Federation member Family Planning Associates Medical Group.

  • Douglas Karpen is the Texas abortionist who performed the fatal abortion on 16-year-old Denise Montoya at Women's Pavillion in Houston, a National Abortion Federation member clinic. He was also sued for refusing to remove the laminaria after a 16-year-old patient had changed her mind about the abortion, resulting in the premature birth and subsequent death of an infant girl.

  • Andre Nehorayoff is the New Jersey abortionist responsible for, among other quackery, the deaths of "Ellen" Roe and "Faye" Roe. He also practiced in New York.

  • Seth Gilbertson is one of the people who signed a Planned Parenthood petition trying to shut down CPCs. Seth said, "Every woman should have the ability to recieve balanced information so they can make their own decisions." Like when Planned Parenthood told my babysitter that her 8-week fetus was "just like a blood clot"? Like the way Planned Parentood told Cristi Stile they were referring her to a "safe" facility, and they sent her to one with no crash cart? Cristi has been incapacitated since that ever so safe abortion. How about the way PP endangered the lives of women with their lies that the anesthesia given to the mother in a late-term abortion kills the fetus? Obstetricians were faced with sick moms who didn't want to consent to desperately-needed surgery because PP's lies convinced them that they would be endangering their loved and wanted babies. How about the lies PP told you to get you to sign the petition in the first place? Get smart, Seth. You've been punked by PP.

  • Fatalities from illegal abortion: After Roe. Performed by amateurs (the rarest type). Performed by midwives and other paramedical folks (more common). Performed by doctors (the most common kind).

  • As for "ethical considerations for physicians with ru-486"? How about this: Don't kill babies. Pretty simple, isn't it?
  • Search: Bleeding to death

Bleeding to death from a nice, safe, legal abortion shouldn't happen, in theory. The modern legal abortionist has everything at his disposal to detect bleeding, correct the causes of bleeding, and treat the blood loss.

Graphic BBC programme shows what abortion is

Warning: Very graphic and not for the squeamish:

What I find amazing is that in spite of presenting what abortion really is, showing very vividly what it really does to very real fetuses, the narrator speaks as if this hideous destruction is somehow really necessary.

    HT: Stop the ACLU Coalition

And then there's this fellow's stunned response. He invites debate:

I have more abortion videos gathered here.

Search: "colorado christi mayfair abortion lawsuit"

They're probably looking for information on Christi Stile.

Christi Stile was only 17 when she came home from roller skating with a friend. She looked shaken and distressed, but when her parents asked her what was wrong, she said that she had just had harsh words with somebody and didn't want to talk about it. Kay and Fred Stile gave the incident no more thought for a long, long time.

Four months later, Christi came to her mother and said that she was pregnant. She was crying, saying that she just couldn't have this baby; it would kill her. In retrospect, Kay said that this is what one should expect from a 17-year-old girl. But at the time, although Fred and Kay disapproved of abortion, Kay agreed to drive Christi to her abortion appointment at Aurora's Mayfair Women's Center, a National Abortion Federation member clinic.

To make a sad situation even sadder, the abortion was scheduled July 1, 1993: the day after Christi's 18th birthday.

Even though they'd been referred to Mayfair by a Planned Parenthood, Kay and Christi were nervous. Was abortion really safe? Kay went with Christi for the informed consent session and asked about safety. She was reassured that the only risk was of heavy bleeding, and that the clinic had everything on hand to deal with that situation should it arise. Kay felt reassured.

Kay stayed in the waiting area as Christi went back for her abortion. Suddenly, the demeanor of the staff changed. There was something wrong, Kay was sure. She was also sure that Christi was the patient who was in some sort of trouble. Kay questioned a staffer, who told her that Christi had experienced a minor complication and that she was being taken to the hospital for observation. Purely routine -- she would be discharged tomorrow. There was no cause for alarm, Kay was assured. Christi was fine; they were just being cautious.

Kay rushed to the hospital in a near panic. When she was arrived, staff told her that she couldn't see Christi until she calmed herself. Steeling her nerve, Kay steadied herself and was led to a patient's bedside.

The girl in the bed was unconscious, stuck full of tubes. Her face was swollen and distorted.

"That's not my daughter," Kay told them. But a nurse handed her a plastic bag containing Christi's jewelry. The girl in the bed was Christi.

Kay had to do the hardest thing she'd ever done in her life: call her husband and tell him he didn't have his daughter any more. She was alive, but she was no longer the same Christi.

Fred and Kay later learned what had happened at Mayfair. Abortionist Ronald Kuseski, not an anesthesiologist, had administered sedatives to Christi through her IV. After the abortion, he looked up to find Christi pale, with bluish lips, and no pulse or respiration. Her heart had stopped. Paramedics were summoned, who managed to restore Christi's pulse and respiration before rushing her to the hospital.

The clinic had no record of Christi's vital signs being recorded during the abortion. Although Kuseski's attorney insisted that the clinic had a "crash cart" to deal with cardiorespiratory arrest, Kay says that Kuseski had told her that the clinic had no "crash cart." The medical board investigation found that Kuseski didn't have pulse oximetery equipment in place for Christi's abortion. Kuseski denied any misconduct during Christi's abortion. The Medical Board sent him a "Letter of Admonition" telling him to adhere to "Anesthesia Monitoring Guidelines" in the future, and to attend CPR and Advanced Cardiac Life Support training.

Perhaps out of concern that Fred and Kay might blame Christi's boyfriend for what had happened to her, Christi's friend told them what had really happened the night she and Christi had gone skating. Christi had been so upset not because she'd had a tiff with a friend, but because an acquaintance had raped her behind the rink.

Standing at Christi's bedside during the filming of Christi's Choice, a documentary video about the family's ordeal, Fred Stile commented that had Christi had her baby instead of having the abortion, he'd be changing diapers on his grandchild instead of on his incapacitated daughter. The baby, of course, would have long since been out of diapers by the time the video was released. And by now, Christi would be a young mother attending school conferences. Having the baby wouldn't have ended Christi's life. Having the abortion effectively did.

As of the release of Christi's Choice, the Stile family had amassed over $250,000 in medical bills. Christi remains in a vegetative state, cared for by her parents. She is not expected to recover.

  • Abortion: Public health miracle?

    Abortion: The Public Health Miracle?

In 1999, the Centers for Disease Control released "Achievements in Public Health, 1900-1999: Healthier Mothers and Babies." This report is a study in what public health efforts can achieve, but also serves as a great example of how statistics can be misused to further the pro-abortion agenda.

The good news is that in the 20th century, maternal and infant mortality fell over 90%. Aseptic techniques of delivery, antibiotics, vaccinations, sanitation, and other progress in medicine and public health deserve due credit for this. It's stunning to reflect on how risky pregnancy was for mothers 100 years ago -- or even 50 years ago. It's doubly stunning to reflect on how the simplest things -- like placing babies on their backs instead of their stomachs to sleep -- can make such a profound difference in saving lives.

The bad news is that our public health officials are so enamored of abortion that they attempt to attiribute better public health to legalization of their favored activity:

"The legalization of induced abortion beginning in the 1960s
contributed to an 89% decline in deaths from septic illegal
    abortions (15) during 1950-1973."

It's disengenuous, to say the least, to credit a few states loosening abortion restrictions starting in 1968 with the huge decline in septic illegal abortion deaths during the nearly twenty year period preceeding the change. Abortion guru Christopher Tietze attributed the decline in abortion deaths during that period to improved abortion techniques (especially the development of vacuum aspiration), improved emergency care (including improved antibiotic and blood transfusion therapy), and a contraceptive-driven drop in unwanted pregnancies. If someone with Tietze's enthusiasm for abortion hesitated to lay this public health achievement on abortion's doorstep, one must wonder what is going on inside the heads of those folks at the CDC.

Of all the public health accomplishments from 1950 to 1973 -- improved neonatal intensive care, improved antibiotics, improved access to blood products, broader access to adequate prenatal care, and improvements in environmental health, to name a few -- our public health employees at the CDC single out limited legalization of abortion as responsible for reducing maternal mortality.

And now that we're on the topic of maternal mortality, let's address that old line, as familiar as, "What's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?" Let's address the familiar abortion advocates' claim that criminal abortions were killing 5,000 - 10,000 American women a year prior to legalization, and the accompanying claim that legalization has all but abolished maternal mortality from abortion.

Let's take a peek at the National Center for Health Statistics' chart on abortion mortality in the second half of the 20th century.

Consider that the first state legalized abortion under limited circumstances in 1966. Straggling states followed suit in 1968. The first laws allowing abortion on demand went into effect in 1970. Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision wiping out virtually every US law against abortion, was in 1973. Go back and peek at that chart again.

Do you see any dramatic drop in maternal deaths during that period? Do you see a shred of evidence that 5,000 to 10,000 women were dying from abortion in any year before 1970?

To find more than 1,000 women dying a year from abortions (and this includes miscarriages and legal abortions performed on moribund women in attempts to save their lives), you have to go back to WWII - before antibiotics were available to treat abortion-related infection. Sanitation, improved nutrition, aseptic procedures, and so on, were already lowering maternal mortality. The advent of antibiotics sent abortion deaths in particular plummeting toward an irreducable minimum. (Given that all surgery has risks, some women will die no matter how careful and skilled the doctors are, so abortion deaths can only be eliminated by eliminating abortion.)

So, legalization of abortion wasn't a public health miracle preventing 5,000 to 10,000 maternal deaths a year. It did prevent SOME deaths, right? Guess again. The CDC's intensive abortion mortality surveillance in the early 1970's showed a reversal in the downward trend. The reduction in illegal abortion deaths was being more than offset by an increase in legal abortion deaths. The prochoice response was not to address the problem. Instead, the CDC dismantled their aggressive mortality surveillance and instead just counted deaths that were voluntarily reported to them. It's no great surprise that the number of reported deaths went down -- they were no longer looking for deaths to report.

We don't know how many women die now from legal abortions. The last reliable information we got was in the early 1970's, and it showed deaths rising annually. Since then we've seen nothing but trash statistics. However, one researcher did his best to replicate the old CDC abortion mortality surveillance. Kevin Sherlock did a search for abortion deaths during the 1980's, and found that indeed, there are a lot of deaths the CDC's abortion mortality surveillance was missing. How many? We don't know.

Anniversary: Woman bleeds to death after safe, legal abortion in Alabama

Leigh Ann Stephens Alford, age 34, underwent an abortion at the hands of Dr. Malachy DeHenre at Summit Medical Center of Alabama, a National Abortion Federation member clinic, on November 25, 2003.

Leigh Ann was discharged from the clinic 20 minutes after her abortion, according to a lawsuit filed by her husband. Within six hours, he said, he called the facility to report that Leigh Ann was suffering pain and fever. She died about 18 hours after the clinic had sent her home. Death was attributed to hemorrhagic shock from an unrecognized uterine perforation.

DeHenre‘s medical license was suspended in Mississippi and Alabama after the death. DeHenre, age 53, also performed abortions at New Woman Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, as well as his own Jackson‘s Women's Health Organization.

Alabama suspended DeHenre‘s license as of July 28. The Mississippi suspension was expedited, rather than addressed in a board meeting scheduled for September 16. An Associated Press article quotes Dr. W. Joseph Burnett, executive director of the Mississippi Board of Medical Licensure: "We couldn‘t wait another day to take action. He won‘t be practicing in Mississippi." The Alabama medical board concluded that DeHenre‘s practice was conducted in such a way as to "endanger the health of patients," and found that he had committed "repeated malpractice."

DeHenry was also investigated after an abortion he performed on March 20, 2003. That patient began to hemorrhage and was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where she underwent a total hysterectomy.

  • Harvey Karman was a self-styled "doctor" who was a darling of the abortion movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Even though he had killed Joyce Johnson in a motel-room abortion in 1955, he was nevertheless applauded for his invention of the Karman canula and for his "super coils". "Super coils" were plastic springs that Harvey believed could make second-trimester abortions so quick and easy that barely-trained laypeople could do them. The Jane abortion syndicate in Chicago brought him a busload of guinea pigs on Mother's Day of 1972, and the government of Bangladesh, in concert with the International Planned Parenthood Federation, brought him in to do his "super-coil" abortions -- augmented with balsa wood! -- on rape victims. When Roe was handed down, Harvey quickly vanished from public view.

  • Kevon Walker is the 21-year-old man charged with getting a 14-year-old girl pregnant three times in six months. The first of the three resulting abortins, Walker said, was the girl's mother's idea. Fat lot of good it did, Mom, to get her vacuumed out without getting the guy who got her pregnant arrested! It bewilders me that prolifers are supposedly the ones obsessed with fetuses, when there are evidenly plenty of prochociers who are equally obsessed, if not more so; it's just that they think that killing fetuses solves everything.

  • Sherri Finkbine was the Arizona Romper-Room lady who probably did more than anybody else -- even Norma "Jane Roe" McCorvey -- to unleash abortion on America. Finkbine did it by being cute, perky, non-threatening, a mom and a preschool teacher, who made getting a legal abortion a public crusade. Finkbine had illegally taken Thalidomide, and decided that a baby with missing or deformed limbs didn't deserve to live. Which I'd love to have seen her say to Johnny Eck, Jeannie Tomaini, Frieda Pushnik, or Randian.

VIDEO REPORT: Mother refuses abortion, daughter celebrates 16 years

The girl who wouldn't have a face? She's lovely. Click the link and see the video.

At seven months into the pregnancy, doctors realized that Donna Joy had a brain disorder called Holoprosencephaly, or HPE.

Physicians told Lori Vance that her child would be completely blind, likely deaf, likely born with no face, no ability to move limbs or suck and swallow.

"Basically, everything that makes you a human being was going to be missing," Vance told News Channel 11. "They wanted to terminate the pregnancy because they said she was going to die anyway," Vance said.

    Vance refused.

She was determined to give Donna Joy a chance. "Even if it was only for a few minutes—to give her some dignity, wrap her up in a pretty blanket. Say ‘I love you’ and let her go," Vance said.

    ....

While the pre-natal studies on Donna Joy's brain were accurate, her functions have surpassed expectations.

"She didn't read the book on this disorder,” Vance said. “No one told her she couldn't do these things. So she does them anyway."

Have you wised up yet, Sarah?

    I'd say probably not.

Somebody was searching for Sarah Ghezaili. She's one of the folks who signed the Planned Parenthood petition to try to keep women ignorant and properly fed into the chute for the abortion mills Sarah added her own comment: "It is absolutely appalling that people need to take advantage of women who are seeking help and guidance to further their anti-choice cause."

Ah, but taking advantage of women seeking help and guidance in order to further the pro-abortion cause, and to make a buck, is okay, I'm assuming.

The whole campaign was a hoax in the first place. Does that bother you, Sarah? That you were punked by PP? Or does the fact that they're campions of "choice" excuse them?

Take a look at some of the things PP has done and tell me if you still think they're such nice people:

  • Planned Parenthood Association of Central and Northern Arizona performed two abortions in 1998 on a 13-year-old girl who was in foster care and being abused by her 23-year-old foster brother. PP performed the abortions without notifying either the girl's parents, foster parents, or Child Protective Service, leaving her subject to continued abuse. They sent another patient home, after inadequate informed consent; she expelled her dead 12-week fetus at home and got to learn the hard way, after the fact, exactly what it was the abortion killed. An employee reported this PP for puncturing a woman's uterus trying to vacuum out an ectopic pregnancy, among other wrongdoing.

  • Planned Parenthood of New York City was cited by inspectors for inadequate equipment, inadequately trained staff, unregistered nurse-anesthetists, and just general griminess. They've been sued multiple times for injuring women.

  • Planned Parenthood of Mid-Michigan was sued for trying to abort a baby in the third trimester, resulting in the premature birth of an injured child. Their negligence nearly killed a woman who actually had an ectopic pregnancy.

  • Planned Parenthood of San Francisco managed to perform an abortion without killing the baby -- they just ripped off an arm and a leg. When the still-living, though maimed, fetus was discovered in a later ultrasound, the mother underwent a second abortion, and was left traumatized.

  • Planned Parenthood of San Diego told my babysitter her 8-week fetus was "just like a blood clot" thus tricking her into consenting to an unwanted abortion. They waited until after the abortion to do 1:1 counseling and learn that the pregnancy in question was planned and wanted and only being aborted because her mom had threatened to throw her out. Then they took this girl, who wanted to get pregnant and was too squeamish about touching herself to even use tampons, and fitted her with a diaphragm. Needless to say, she was quickly pregnant again, and quickly forced into another abortion by her mother.

And how about the women who have died because they trusted Planned Parenthood?

Who should we be investigating, Sarah? Who should we be shutting down? Will you ever get tired of the lies and deception? Or will you cling to the abortion lobby's idea that it's better to be killed by prochoicers than to be shown yucky picturs by prolifers?
  • I'd be counting my blessings....

But this woman is less than delighted that her abortionist at Planned Parenthood managed to perform an abortion procedure that failed to kill the fetus. Here's another article about that case, this time naming the abortionist as Dr. Allison Bryant.

She's suing for the cost of raising the child. Has she never heard of adoption? It is possible to bear a child and bail out on the expenses, if you consider your own child to be such a horrible burden.

On the other hand, this woman has a more legitimate beef. Her Planned Parenthood abortionist managed to maim her baby without killing it. She underwent a second abortion instead of counting herself fortuate that her child's life had been spared, but she still has a legitimate gripe that they ripped an arm and a leg off her baby. (I wrote the case up back in 2005, but thought you folks might like a "secular" source rather than taking my word for it.)

While we're on the topis of PP, there's also this case, involving a 40-year-old woman who nearly bled to death after a PP abortion.

    November 24 abortion nightmares

  • Barbara R., age 21, sued Women's Health Services in Pittsburgh after she underwent an abortion there on November 24, 1981. Barbara said that she was not provided with adequate informed consent prior to the abortion, nor with adequate follow-up instructions and care afterward. Two days later, Barbara was admitted to the hospital with severe fever, chills, and abdominal pain. Surgeons there found a septic incomplete abortion, with necrotic-appearing endometrial tissue. They also found a hole in Barbara's uterus, and pooled blood in her pelvic cavity. (Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas Case No. GD83-14156)

  • Vicky R. filed suit against the notorious Inglewood Women's Clinic after an abortion performed there by Stephen Pine on November 24, 1982. She suffered "perforation in the anterior lower uterine segment, left ovary and tube damaged with scar tissue, abdominal pain, vaginal discharge, urinary problems, severe shock to her nervous system, and other injuries." Vicky required hospitalization and care by physical therapists to recover from her injuries. (Los Angeles County Superior Court Case No. C476082) Vicky was lucky. Belinda Byrd, Kathy Murphy, Cora Lewis, Lynette Wallace, and Elizabeth Tsuji didn't survive their Inglewood abortions.

  • Mary L., age 29, filed suit against Dr. Robert F. Meger and Birth Control Care Center after an abortion she underwent there at Meger's hands on November 24, 1986. The suit says that Meger "punctured [Mary's] uterus and gouged out a portion of [her] colon." Twice Mary called the clinic to report pain, fever, and bleeding. Meger diagnosed her trouble as a urinary tract infection. Three days after the abortion, Mary was admitted to ths hospital, "wherein an intact fetus of 12 approximate weeks gestation, including an umbilical cord, and placental tissue were removed from Mary's abdominal cavity." Rather than remove the fetus, Meger had shoved it through a hole in Mary's uterus and left it there. Mary had to undergo surgery to repair her damaged uterus and colon. She was hospitalized for seven days. (Clark County District Court Cse No. A275976)

  • Roma H., age 32, went to I.C. Medical Building Associates for an abortion on November 24, 1987. She suffered severe pain and fever afterward, but when she called the clinic they assured her that her symptoms were normal. She was rushed to the hospital where she underwent a procedure to remove retained fetal tissue. (New York Daily News, December 15, 1989)

  • Tracie M., age 18, filed suit against Missippi abortionist Tommy Tucker. She said she submitted to an abortion by Tucker at his office on November 24, 1990. Her uterus and bowels were perforated, and other internal organs were injured and damaged. She required hospitalization and suffered permanent injury. (Jefferson County Circuit Court Civil Action No. CV913260) Tucker is the aborionist responsible for the death of Angela Hall.
  • Ultrasound helps resolve ambivalence, rejection

Option Ultrasound Saving Lives. (HT: Women for Life)

Pregnancy centers using ultrasound machines report that 88% of their abortion-minded patient reject abortion after seeing an ultrasound of their unborn baby. This is far from the first report on the power of ultrasounds to help women get past their normal initial ambivalance toward, or rejection of, the pregnancy:
    • "Surprise or shock is often the initial reaction to the validation of pregnancy. Caplan (1959) indicated that initial rejection of pregnancy is common, but that it is generally followed by acceptance at the end of the first trimester." (Lederman, Psychosocial Adaptation in Pregnancy, 1984)

    • "Those who plead for an extensive relaxation of the law [against abortion] have no idea of the very many cases where a woman who, during the first three months, makes a most impassioned appeal for her pregnancy to be 'finished,' later, when the baby is born, is thankful indeed that it was not killed while still an embryo. During my long years in practice I have had many a letter of the deepest gratitude for refusing to accede to an early appeal." (A. Bourne, A Doctor's Creed: The Memoirs of a Gynecologist, 1963)

    • "[Members of the 1955 Planned Parenthood conference on abortion] agreed, and this was backed up by evidence from the Scandinavians, that when a woman seeking an abortion is given the chance of talking over her problem with a properly trained and oriented person, she will in the process very often resolve many of her qualms and will spontaneously decide to see the pregnancy through, particularly if she is assured that supportive help will continue to be available to her." (Calderone, "Illegal Abortion as a Public Health Problem," American Journal of Public Health, July 1960)

    • "M.J. Daly has noted that the legitimately pregnant woman, and often those illegitimately pregnant too, are ambivalent to the pregnancy. This ambivalence is so universal that it may be considered normal in the first trimester. "The Unwanted Pregnancy," Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1970." (Cited in Gardner, Abortion: The Personal Dilemma, 1972)

    • "Ambivalence is another emotional response observed in many pregnant women. .... Surprise or shock may be the initial reaction, followed by very mixed feelings. .... Rubin believes that few women who become pregnant feel ready 'now.' .... Initial rejection of the pregnancy is common, Caplan states, but it is usually replaced by acceptance by the end of the first trimester." (Nichols and Humenick, Childbirth Education: Practice, Research, and Theory, 1988)

This can also be seen in the case of women who initially rejected the pregnancy enough to actually submit to an abortion, only to change their minds after learning that the fetus had survived the attempt on his or her life.

Which all, of course, makes it crystal clear why the abortion lobby is so dead-set against requiring abortionists to offer women the opportunity to see their ultrasounds prior to going through with the abortion.

Those lightning-fast folks at the CDC have finally released their 2004 Abortion Surveillance Summary. They didn't report their data for 2004 deaths; I guess this is an area of low priority for them so of course it can wait. They report 10 maternal deaths in 2003. I only know of Leigh Ann Alford, Holly Patterson, and Vivian Tran. So there are at least seven women for whom abortion was the last choice they ever made, and their deaths went under the radar.

Perhaps it's because during the 1940s, while abortion was still illegal, that there was a massive drop in maternal mortality from abortion? The death toll fell from 1,407 in 1940, to 744 in 1945, to 263 in 1950. Most researches attribute this plunge to the development of blood transfusion techniques and the introduction of antibiotics.

  • California abortionist in trouble

    “Repeated negligent acts”

The Medical Board of California has disciplined another California abortionist. For the second time in a dozen years, Dr. Edward K. Wilson of Los Angeles has been ordered to surrender his license while serving Medical Board-ordered probation.

Following a series of hearings, Administrative Law Judge H. Stuart Waxman concluded in March that Wilson was guilty of “repeated negligent acts,” “unprofessional conduct,” and “failure to maintain adequate records.”

The Medical Board disciplined Wilson in 1995 for very similar reasons, and he served five years probation.

In the current case, Medical Board records indicate that Wilson prescribed medicines without indicating in patients’ charts why the drugs were necessary, failed to document physical exams before performing abortions and other procedures, and ordered medical tests without documenting why they were needed.

Without saying why, the hearing officer noted in the record that Wilson has been banned from treating women on Medi-Cal: “Recently, Respondent’s case load decreased significantly after the California Department of Health Services prohibited him from seeing Medi-Cal patients.”

Wilson worked at Leo Kenneally's notorious Her Medical Clinic, where Michelle Thames, Lilliana Cortez, Maria Soto, and Donna Heim died.

I have this case in my files:

Juana N. filed suit alleging that she underwent an abortion by Wilson on September 13, 1986, at West Coast Women's Medical Group. She sought follow up at, and was admitted, to Inglewood Women's Hospital that day. There, on September 16, Steven Pine performed second D&C, after diagnosing an incomplete septic abortion, possible bowel perforation, and possible tubo-ovarian abscess. Juana suffered severe and continuous pain that required her to be transferred to Tarzana Medical Center's ICU on September 17, where she underwent surgery to treat intra-abdominal sepsis and pelvic abscess. She was hospitalized five weeks. (LA County Superior Court Case No. SEC61659)

Massachusetts abortionists covering up for sex abusers

Massachusetts Becomes Latest State With Abortion-Sex Abuse Coverup

In this latest case, a grand jury in Middlesex indicted 51-year-old Steven Infante of New Milford, Connecticut on various charges of rape and assault and battery.

Infante appeared in Middlesex Superior Court on Wednesday and was released after pleading not guilty to the charges.

Prosecutors say Infante had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl that began at that early age and continued until she was 21. When she turned 17, the girl became pregnant and Infante drove her to a local abortion business, according to court records.

He is also accused of sexually molesting a second teenage girl.

    ....

In May, the employee of an abortion facility in Connecticut issued a guilty plea in a case involving the sexual abuse of three teenage girls.

Former modeling agency owner Michael Britt, who worked as a janitor at the abortion center, was accused of sexually assaulting three teenagers from Norwalk who went to his modeling agency.

He took a 14 year-old to the Summit Women's Center abortion facility, where he worked and which was located in the same building as his agency.

The Britt case followed just weeks after another abortion-sexual abuse case prompted observers to wonder why abortion facilities are not contacting authorities about the actions.

Kevon Walker, 22, was charged earlier this month with getting his then 14 year-old girlfriend pregnant. He got the unnamed girl pregnant three times in six months and the girl wound up having three abortions as a result.

However, abortion businesses failed to report the statutory rape to authorities and officials only began investigating Walker's actions when the victim's mother contacted them.

    Solving the mystery

People had been searching for "abortionist arrested" and "Sheikh arrested". Now Life News solves the mystery for me: Kentucky Abortion Practitioner Jailed for Alleged Medicaid Fraud (with mugshot goodness)

Hamid Hussain Sheikh is being held on $100,000 bond. He's been charged with billing the state for "ultrasounds" that were actually elective abortions. He faces up to 20 years in prison. He was also charged with double-billing -- charging the patients for abortions, then billing the state.

After they charged him with Medicaid fraud, investigators search his offices in Lexington and found the abortion facility as having "deplorable sanitary conditions." Officials will forward their findings to the Board of Medical Licensure for potential actions.

“The investigation continues,” Attorney General Greg Stumbo said in a statement LifeNews.com received. “Additional charges are possible in view of the deplorable sanitary conditions found in Sheikh’s office.”

For more, see the indictment, or this press release from the Kentucky Attorney General:

.... According to the indictment, Sheikh has engaged in the scheme continuously since 2004.

[Attorney General] Stumbo credited his new program called the Fraud Investigation Support Team (FIST) with discovering the illegal abortion activities. FIST is composed of a Medicaid fraud work group trained in data claims and computer forensics to efficiently and effectively review allegations of fraud.

    ....

The investigation began with FIST reviewing Medicaid claims data to identify Medicaid patients seen by Dr. Sheikh. FIST personnel recognized prescriptions that made up a "three drug cocktail" that would typically be prescribed after an abortion. As a result, this led the team to uncover the potential fraudulent claims....

    Sex abuse facilitators face charges

Man Behind Effort to Legalize Abortion in Nicaragua Gets 30 Years for Step-Daughter's Rape: Criminal Convictions against International Pro-Abortion Feminists May be Next

Francisco Fletes Sanchez, who covered up his sexual abuse of his stepdaughter "Rosita" in 2003 with the help of international pro-abortion organizations, has received the maximum sentence of 30 years in prison for his crimes.

Fletes was helped by Ipas, an international abortion-advocacy group, in obtaining an abortion for his 9-year-old stepdaughter, "Rosita". Ipas arranged an abortion through Nicaragua's "Women's Network Against Violence", and the fetus was disposed of, thus preventing authorities from identifying the girl's real rapist. She was subjected to four more years of rape by her stepfather before a second pregnancy, not aborted, raised questions and led to the identification of Fletes as the perpetrator in both pregnancies.

Charges have been filed against several member's of the Network for their role in obtaining an abortion for "Rosita"....

The most prominent member of the Network charged with the crime is Marta Maria Blandon, is the Director for Central America for the international pro-abortion agency Ipas. Blandon admitted publicly ... that she knew Fletes was under investigation by Costa Rican authorities when she helped him to achieve his goal of escaping to Nicaragua.

Evidence also exists that other members of the Network, which continued to support Fletes, his wife, and stepdaughter with free housing, knew that he was the real father of the child and conspired to cover up the crime. ....

It would be lovely if we started doing this in the United States -- prosecuting people who help child-rapists to cover up their crimes by aborting the resulting babies.

Of course, if we did, I get the feeling a lot of Planned Parenthood and NAF clinics would be staffed on work-release.

Anniversary: Mentally disabled rape victim killed by safe, legal abortion

Nineteen-year-old Diane Boyd lived in a state institution for the mentally retarded. There, she was beaten and raped in July of 1981, and was later discovered to be pregnant. An abortion was arranged for Diane at National Abortion Federation member Reproductive Health Services in St. Louis, and Diane's mother signed a consent form. The abortion was performed October 22, 1981. Diane died the next day.

According to suits later filed by Diane's mother, RHS staff and abortionist Robert Crist did not check for possible drug interactions before giving Diane valium and sublimaze. These drugs evidently reacted with Diane's usual medication, thorazine, causing her to stop breathing. Diane's mother said that the clinic lacked heart monitoring equipment or resuscitation equipment.

Diane was not the last woman to die after abortion by Crist. Seventeen-year-old Latatchie Veal bled to death after an abortion by Crist in 1991. Twenty-two-year-old Nichole Williams died of DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulopathy) after an abortion by Crist in 1997.

And RHS likewise has other dead. Fourteen-year-old Sandra Kaiser committed suicide after a 1984 abortion at RHS, performed without her mother's knowledge or consent.

    Anniversary: Terrible holiday surprise

When 18-year-old Michelle Madden's parents arrived at her college to bring her home for Thanksigiving of 1986, the house mother had to break the news: their daughter was dead.

Michelle had sought an abortion from O.B. Evans at Family Planning Medical Center of Mobile, Alabama. Michelle had been taking medication for epilepsy, and a doctor had told her that her baby would have birth defects.

Three days after the abortion, Michelle had collapsed. She was taken to the hospital, where doctors found a leg bone, two pieces of skull, and some placenta still in Michelle's uterus. The surgery to save her life was too late. Sepsis had already set in, and Michelle died three days after she was admitted.

Her parents sued Evans and the facility, and in 1991 a jury awarded them $10 million in damages.

Searches: Embolism, Laura Smith, and more

  • Steve Lichtenberg is a frequent presenter at National Abortion Federation Risk Management Seminars, despite having massively overdosed 13-year-old Deanna Bell at a Chicago abortion mill run by the notorious Family Planning Associates Medical Group chain of for-profit abortion clinics. After Deanna's death, the referring hospital got a note reading "Uneventful D&E. Thank you."

  • Eduardo Verastegui, star of Bella, is a breath of fresh air in Hollywood. Alas, he is too young for me!

  • Air embolism gross negligence: I have the deaths of Betty Ladel in 1954, Barbara Lofrumento in 1962, "Cindy" Roe in 1972, "Danielle" Roe in 1972, Sharonda Rowe in 1981, Gaylene Golden in 1985, and "Adelle" Roe in 2002.

  • I got searches for both Eileen Smith and Laura Smith. Eileen is the mother of Laura Smith (pictured), who died on a Massachusetts abortion table this past September.

  • Somebody is looking for "abortionist arrested Sheikh Lexington". Does anybody know what's up with that?

  • Leigh Ann Alford, age 34, underwent an abortion at the hands of Dr. Malachy DeHenre (pictured) at Summit Medical Center of Alabama, a National Abortion Federation member clinic, on November 25, 2003.

It's late in the morning and I have to get ready for work. More later!
  • Today's searches: A mixed bag, and more nastiness

  • "Why saline abortions are illegal" -- They're not. They're just unpopular. For good reason.

  • Another search for nasty abortion stories.

  • Brenda Pratt Shafer is the once proudly pro-choice nurse who underwent a sudden conversion after working three days in an abortion clinic. Ah, nothing like a dose of the real thing to make the theory not seem so peachy after all!

  • As for safe, legal abortion in Arizona: We have the the goings-on at this Planned Parenthood. There's P. Scott Ricke, who managed to get his hand stuck in a patient. We have the clinic that killed Lou Anne Herron and Lisa Bardsley, and tried to abort a near-term infant. There's Robert Tamis, who botched this woman's abortion and performed the fatal abortion on DaNette Pergusson.

  • Rosie Jimenez was the Texas woman who saved $10 by going to a midwife instead of to Planned Parenthood for her third abortion, once she learned that she couldn't get federal funding to pay for elective abortions anymore. The abortion lobby blamed funding restrictions. I'd blame the midwife, myself, since she's the one who killed the girl.

  • Womancare of Lansing might be related to Womancare of Detroit, a fairly seedy abortion mill run by Detroit Memorial Hospital. So maybe our old pal Abraham Alberto Hodari (pictured) works there, too.

  • Abortion mishap stories? Come back daily. You'll have to be more specific than that!
  • Anniversary: Mysterious illegal abortion death

On November 21, 1924, 24-year-old Mildred Bleschke died at Chicago's Grant Hospital from complications of an abortion performed earlier that day. The perpetrator was never identified.

Searches: Atlanta abortions, and an assortment of individuals

  • Betty Hines was 21 years old when she died of sickle-cell crisis triggered by a safe and legal abortion performed in a California hospital on July 19, 1971. Other women who died of sickle cell crisis triggered by abortion include Margaret Davis and Sheryl Roe.

  • The National Abortion Federation is a sort of abortionists' guild that promises the moon and delivers pretty much the same quackery as other abortionists, including fatal quackery. Caveat emptor. In spades.

  • Bill and Karen Bell are the parents of Becky Bell, the Indiana teenager who died of pneumonia while keeping a pregnancy a secret from her parents. Her parents saw the word "abortion" on her autopsy report and evidently didn't understand that it's the medical word for a miscarriage. The abortion lobby, comprised of people who knew better, decided not to enlighten them but to instead use them as a human shield in their battle against parental involvement laws. So the teens who really did die because of secret abortions -- Dawn Ravenelle, Erica Richardson, and Sandra Kaiser spring to mind -- get swept under the rug, and Becky, who miscarried, becomes the poster child for treating parents like they're the enemy and abortionists as if they're saviors. Yeah, like they saved Dawn, Erica, and Sandra. Nice work, guys.

  • Ida Cantor was the illegal abortionist responsible for the death of "Patsy" Roe.

  • Curtis Wickliffe was the father of a baby girl who died of injuries sustained during a botched delivery by abortionist Ronachai Banchongmanie. Never trust your baby to an abortionist.

  • Somebody was looking for "abortion deaths Dallas 2007". Is there something I don't know about? Has anybody heard anything?

  • And Alberto Hodari remains a popular search. This National Abortion Federation member worked at Woman Care Clinic and Detroit Memorial Hospital. He is believed to have performed the fatal abortions on Tamia Russell (pictured) and Chivon Williams. Despite -- or prehaps because of -- all this, Medical Students for Choice think he's the bee's knees. Though I think they could pick a better role model, myself.

  • As for "abortions up to 27 weeks Atlanta, Georgia", we have the fatal ones performed on Catherine Pierce, Geneva Calton, Angela Scott and Deloris Smith (Two in one day! How fortunate they were safe and legal!), Arnetta Hardaway, Jacqueline Reynolds, and Demetrice Andrews. Then there's Midtown Hospital, that got caught performing illegal third-trimester abortions, and performed the fatal abortion on Sara Niebel. If this is what you're into, go to town.
  • Same day, two typical Chicago illegal abortion deaths

On November 20, 1925, 23-year-old Mrs. Helen Bain died in Chicago from complications of a criminal abortion performed that day. A doctor, George Slater, was arrested on November 21 for Helen's death. Slater was indicted by a grand jury for homicide on May 1, 1928.

The same day Helen Bain died, 29-year-old Anna Kick died in Chicago's Washington Park Hospital from an abortion performed that day at an undisclosed location. The coroner determined that a midwife was responsible for Anna's death, but did not document the midwife's name.

To the Medical Students for Choice

Kia Jones, Katie O'Connell, Cynthia Velting-Kidder. Whichever of you it was that proudly introduced Alberto Hodari (pictured). You said, "I'm sure pretty much everyone here knows that this has been... there's been a lot of [unintelligible] surrounding this talk. One of our fellow students sent our flyer to the national pro-life people. We are now all blogged on their blogs, and you know, it's pretty upsetting that a fellow student would do that to us, brand us, so people know what kind of people we are. But we're here to stay and we're not intimidated by that and we really appreciate everyone coming out becuase it makes all that perhaps worth it."

This man killed a fifteen year old girl and you hold him up as a role model, then have the unmitigated gall to stage a pity party that people judge you? Where is your pity for Tamia Russell and her devastated family?

What the hell is wrong with you? Fine. You're "prochoice" and thus see fetuses as garbage. But what excuse does that give you to treat Tamia Russell like garbage? Why don't you go to her family and tell them how insignificant she was, how far beneath your notice she was? Does that poor girl ever cross your mind? I'd say not, but maybe she does. Maybe you admire Hodari because he rid the world of a poor, minority girl. One less ghetto dweller? Is the spirit of Scrooge alive in your callous heart?

You should be ashamed of yourself.

    Is something up with Knarr?

Is something up with William Malcolm Knarr? 'Cause somebody was searching for "malcolm knarr investigation channel 5 news".

I have old stuff on him. For example, the 1991 National Abortion Federation annual report listed him as a member.

According to several newspapers, a patient identified as K.P. filed suit regarding an October 29, 1992 abortion performed by Knarr at his Aid for Women. The abortion was incomplete, and K experienced pain and bleeding. Knarr performed a second abortion on November 5. K continued to experience pain and bleeding. When she contacted Knarr 12 days later, he advised her to seek care elsewhere, which she did. This physician noted discharge and multiple bacterial infections, and admitted K to the hospital. There an ultrasound revealed a foreign object left in her uterus. This doctor removed the object. Reportedly Knarr was unable to treat K for this himself because he'd lost his hospital privileges over his treatment of patient T.C.

Which leads us to T.C. Joseph Walter Manley had performed an abortion on her in 1991 at Knarr's Aid for Women, and Knarr had provided follow-up at a hospital. T ended up needing a hysterectomy.

A former employee filed an affidavit stating that a 16-year-old girl's mother called "in tears" after her daughter's abortion, stating that Knarr had "torn up" the girl's uterus and that as a result she suffered fever, hospitalization, and sterility.

A petition to revoke Knarr's license, filed in 1993, alleged: performing unnecessary tests and services, lack of malpractice coverage, writing prescriptions in violation of federal regulations, prescribing or administering drugs without federal registration, improperly monitoring drugs, failure to adhere to standards of care regarding patients S.E., A.S., T.R., and T.C., "Licensee has the inability to practice the branch of the Healing Arts for which he is licensed with reasonable skill and safety to patients by reason of illness, alcoholism, excessive use of drugs, controlled substances, chemical or any other type of material or as a result of any mental or physical condition." Knarr was ordered to undergo 5 days evaluation at a treatment center; he refused to release the evaluation to the medical board.

Knarr had been convicted in Oklahoma for sale of marijuana and LSD and possession of hashish September 2, 1970. He then failed to disclose these convictions on a federal application, an application for hospital privileges, and when applying for his Kansas license. For this false filing of documents he was given a 4 years prison sentence, suspended, $5000 fine, in 1984.

An affidavit by a former employee states that:
  • No staff at his clinic were RNs or LPNs
  • All staff, including a receptionist with no medical training, did medical work, such as starting IVs to produce anesthesia and restore consciousness, assisting in abortion procedures, taking medical history and blood pressure, performing ultrasounds, and doing Rh factor testing
  • Patients were required to pay for abortion prior to any other activity. Patients who changed their minds about abortion were charged for office visit and sonogram, such charge usually being $90, even if she had not seen the doctor
  • After payment, the patient would be given materials to read describing the abortion procedure as safe, and differing from the information "which is supposed to be given to the women eight hours before her abortion"
  • Adoption was not offered
  • Patients were told verbally and in clinic materials to disbelieve information given by protesters
  • Cash patients were aborted same day, regardless of informed consent requirements or intake of food prior to arrival at facility
  • Patient age was not verified with I.D.
  • In order to disguise presence in procedure room of staff member who had done pre-procedure counseling, staff would sign records for each other's counseled patients
  • Counselor training consisted of reading materials provided by the facility
  • Staff who scheduled abortion appointments received a percentage of the abortion fee
  • RhoGam was given in doses not in accordance with Physicians Desk Reference
  • Knarr was notified by telephone when all patients were present, and at least four women were expected to be prepped, with feet in stirrups, for abortion prior to his arrival. Upon arrival, Knarr would sometimes meet with staff for as long as two hours before proceeding with abortions
  • Women were sent out of facility rather than given somewhere to lie down after insertion of laminaria
  • Due to error in sonogram reading, one patient was discovered to have an advanced pregnancy beyond 16 weeks, resulting in lodging of the fetal head, which Knarr crushed with clamps
  • Anesthesia used caused transient amnesia, and women resisting the procedure were given more Versed, "If a woman asked Knarr to stop the procedure, he ignored her because he felt she was drugged up and wouldn't remember it."
  • No check was made to determine if all fetal tissues had been removed. Fetal tissues were stored in an unrefrigerated barrel inside the back door. In cases where less than 10 cc of material was removed, tissues were sent to pathologist, sometimes were determined to contain no product of conception; but the women were not notified of pathology report results and no efforts were made to determine reason for lack of fetal tissue in specimen
  • Torn cervix was common complication
  • Knarr once left a tenaculum and speculum in a patient
  • Knarr often arrived appearing disheveled, on occasion he appeared to be high on drugs; he once performed an abortion after stating that he was not alert due to ingestion of drugs.
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease was common; neither post-abortion counseling nor referrals for such were provided
  • Women counseled personally by Knarr always followed through with abortion
  • A police officer regularly responding to calls about protesters was dating a clinic staff member
  • 12 vials of Versed became unaccounted for; Versed was administered in manner inconsistent with advice of PDR, which recommended its use only in settings "that provide constant monitoring of respiratory and cardiac function"
  • Blood was drawn in exam room or kitchen, and was stored with food in the refrigerator
  • An employee found a four-inch fetus in the garbage disposal
  • After OSHA inspectors found non-compliance, Knarr still did not conform
  • Cash paid for abortions often was unaccounted for
  • Knarr ingested Talwin from sample packages
  • An employee heard Knarr phoning prescriptions for Xanax for himself and another employee; a Wal-Mart pharmacist told an employee that Wal-Mart would not accept prescriptions from Knarr due to investigation for over-prescribing drugs
  • Employees smoked marijuana at a picnic at Knarr's house; an employee used Methamphetamine during work hours.

A Wichita Eagle article states that the owner of the building filed suit against Knarr because he "represented to the plaintiff that he would be operating a family practice when in fact it was his intention to operate an abortion clinic," and that operating the clinic instead of a family practice office would require changes in plumbing to meet building codes, resulting in a threat by the city to cut off water to all tenants in the building.

The clincher: a report in the Topeka Capital-Journal said that an obstetric patient complained that Knarr had left her in stirrups for over three hours, "inappropriately manipulated the perineum," "displayed a lack of knowledge in the use of forceps to deliver the baby," and "displayed a lack of knowledge regarding episiotomies and their repair."

The last I knew, Knarr had turned over his facility to none other than Kristin Neuhaus. Who got shut down by the state for being a danger to her patients, so she decided to make a living rubber-stamping George Tiler's third trimester abortion patients.

So! I have to leave for work, kids. See what you can find out about this guy and what he's been up to lately, and we'll compare notes later.
  • Searches - anencephaly and more

  • Yes, roughly 90% of pre-legalization abortions were done by physicians. Here is some of their handwork.

  • Hemorrhage deaths from abortion.

  • There were several variations on searches for anencephaly. This baby has baffled the doctors by surviving for ten months, as of the most recent update. (Some prochoicers are really ticked off about this.) You can read more typical stories here.

  • Beverly McMillan worked in Mississippi's first abortion clinic. Then one day she actually saw human remains in the shredded bits of fetus she'd always managed to count blindly up to that point. Her days as an abortionist were numbered after that.

  • Lysol douche ads: They were real. And I think they may account for some of the "lysol abortion" horror stories.

  • Aletheia Meloncon is the mother of Edrica Goode, who died this year after a nurse at a Planned Parenthood ignored signs of infection and inserted laminaria anyway. Edrica quickly became sick and disoriented and her family, unaware of the impending abortion, were not able to tell doctors what was causing her raging infection. Aletheia, please drop me an email. I know of other moms who would like to get in touch with you.

  • "expelling chunks of tissue after second trimester abortion" -- Here are some expelled-tissue incidents. Here are some cases with clinical descriptions provided by medical examiners.

  • Randall Whitney was a troubled Florda abortionist who quit last year. For good? Does anybody know?

  • Leo Kenneally ran (runs?) the notorious Her Medical Clinic where Michelle Thames, Lilliana Cortez, Donna Heim, and Maria Soto died. It's unclear to what extent Maria's death was due to her care or lack thereof at Her Medical Clinic.

  • Adapation in pregnancy.
  • I've noticed a pattern

I made the mistake of letting myself get drawn into an online discussion: "Can a Christian be pro-choice?"

To me, this is a serious no-brainer. Here are the abundance of reasons I say this. I went into more depth here. In a nutshell: Each and every one of us is a masterpiece of God's handiwork, made in His image, and to simply destroy a child as an exercise in free will is the embodiment of spitting in God's eye. It shows a lack of faith. It shows a lack of love. It shows a lack of compassion. It shows a lack of everything the Christian faith is about.

I noticed two things among the "God is prochoice!" crowd. Mind you, these are professing Christians:

    1. They cling to the image of "breath of life" with the tenacity of the damned. (As well they might.) These people don't tend to be Biblical literalists in general, but boy, do they get literal here! God breathed the breath of life into Adam and that PROVES that life starts with the first BREATH! Period! Paragraph! Quote not to me any other scriptures! It's right there: BREATH OF LIFE BREATH OF LIFE BREATH OF LIFE BREATH OF LIFE! From people who don't take a single other word of the Creation story literally. Interesting.

    2. "God gave us free will. Therefore God is prochoice." Yeah, God gave us free will. That's how we went wrong, remember? Choosing evil?

As near as I can figure, this praticular brand of "prochoice Christian" worships free will, rather than the Creator that gave us that free will. It's about personal soverignty, not God's soveriegnty.

Which is really dangerous spiritual ground to plant your flag on.

    Typical illegal abortion annivesary

Joyce Chorney, age 25, died Wednesday, November 18, 1953. An autopsy was performed at Bellevue Hospital. It showed that she had died of an induced abortion. A doctor, Alfred Joseph, was charged with criminal abortion in her death.

    Searches: Old, new, and nasty.

  • Bleeding to death -- in this case, from abortion -- in theory ought not to happen. David Grimes and Willard Cates of the CDC noted that the modern legal abortionist has everything at his disposal to detect and treat hemorrhage before it becomes fatal. Which did nothing to protect Eurice Agbagaa, Mickey Apodaca, Leigh Ann Alford, Gloria Aponte, Jacqueline Bailey, Junette Barnes, Myrta Baptiste, Cassandra Bleavins, Belinda Byrd, Teresa Causey, Sandra Chmiel, Pamela Colson, Liliana Cortez, Mary Ann Dancy, Barbaralee Davis, Glenda Davis, Synthia Dennard, Anjelica Duarte, Evelyn Dudley, Gladyss Estanislao, Linda Fondren, Kathleen Gilbert, Maria Gomez, Shary Graham, Doris Grant, Sharon Hamptlon, Lou Ann Herron, Louchrisser Jackson, Sandra Milton, Ruth Montero, Sylvia Moore, Dorothy Muzorewa, Guadalupe Negron, Shirley Payne, Mary Pena, Magdalena Rodriguez, "Mary" Roe, "Nadine" Roe, Carole Schaner, Margaret Smith, Jennifer Suddeth, Cheryl Tubbs, and God alone knows how many other women.

  • For hyperemesis, Ashli's the expert.

  • Searching for Malachy DeHenre? Ding ding ding You've picked a winner!

  • Amante Rongetti remains an object of curiosity. Spared the death penalty after the 1928 abortion death of Loretta Enders, he was freed to then kill Elizabeth Palumbo.

  • Brenda Pratt Schaffer had her road-to-Damascas experience when she saw a live-born baby killed after it survived a D&X ("Partial Birth") abortion. There's nothing like working in an abortion clinic to cure you of being prochoice -- if you have eyes, a brain, and a heart.

  • I'm not sure why abortions specifically in the 1940s remains such a popular search.

  • Somebody came searching specifically for nasty abortions. As if there's any other kind. Well, I will try to oblige by providing a sample of extreme nastiness: Jammie Garcia drowned in her own feculent fluids because her abortionist had shoved her fetus into her bowl and left it there to block things up; Carolina Gutierrez endured the amputation of her gangrenous limbs in a futile attempt to save her from abortion-related sepsis; Lawson Akpolonu was raping patients in his filthy clinic -- something Diane Sawyer considered "a non-story" when we tipped her off; abortionist James Park's method of disposing of late-term fetuses -- running them through a meat grinder -- was enough to make fellow abortionist Curts Stover lose his lunch. Nasty enough? Or should I look for more?

  • Interest hasn't abated in the September death of Laura Hope Smith.

  • And abortion stories seeing the fetus: Here you go.
  • And the spell is broken!

One down, how many more to go? Dolly creator Prof Ian Wilmut shuns cloning.

The scientist who created Dolly the sheep, a breakthrough that provoked headlines around the world a decade ago, is to abandon the cloning technique he pioneered to create her.

Prof Ian Wilmut's decision to turn his back on "therapeutic cloning", just days after US researchers announced a breakthrough in the cloning of primates, will send shockwaves through the scientific establishment.

Well, no it won't. Doctors have been using adult stem cells in successful treatments for years. There's no reason to think that this particular guy catching on will drop the scales from anybody else's eyes.

Still, it's nice to see one embryo-obsessed scientist come to his senses.

    Anesthesia death from 2002

Mi Young Kim had lost her privileges at Fairfax Hospital in 1999, and voluntarily surrendered her license in the state of New York in 2000. But despite that, Kim is listed as practicing at NOVA Healthcare in Fairfax, Virginia. She had at one point accidentally started an abortion on a 26.5-weeks-pregnant woman in her office on May 17, 1997, when she'd originally thought the patient was only 8 weeks pregnant.

Another patient wasn't as fortunate as that patient. A woman identified as "Patient A" (I'll call her "Adelle"), was 26 years old and had a history of anemia and sickle cell disease. Kim did not order proper lab studies, document an appropriate history, or perform a proper exam on Adelle before performing an abortion on her on November 16, 2002. Kim administered 25 mg of Versed to Adelle, in response to her reports of pain, over a 10-minute period, without giving the medicine time to take effect.

Kim told the medical board that she didn't give Adelle any analgesia for pain because she gives enough Versed to cause amnesia so that the patient can't remember the pain. The board noted that Kim lacked judgment and knowledge of intravenous conscious sedation and that she was not fit to supervise a CRNA.

At the end of the abortion, Kim noted that Adelle's pulse oximeter reading was only 70%, an alarming finding. Kim thought she found a pulse, didn't assess whether or not Adelle was breathing, and simply ordered her staff to give Adelle oxygen by mask and call 911.

Kim administered Romazicon to reverse the effects of the Versed, but did not notice that Adelle had gone into cardiac arrest. As such, Kim made no effort to resuscitate her. The ambulance crew arrived and transported Adelle to the hospital, where she was declared dead from possible air embolism.

The medical board noted that Kim was not certified in Advanced Cardiopulmonary Life Support, nor was she or anybody else on her staff qualified to perform an intubation or use crash cart equipment. Kim did not document the operative report for Adelle. Kim told the board that the police had told her not to make any further notes in her file.

The board did not suspend or yank Kim's license, instead noting that she was making improvements in her quality of care. She was instead placed under stipulations regarding her use of anesthesia in her office and her record-keeping.

Kim called her office "Landmark Women's Center", giving the impression that it was a clinic.

The right to do what she wants to with her own body

A question for prochoicers: Is it okay for female athletes to deliberately get pregnant in order to boost performance, indending to then abort, since it is only the natural "doping" that is desired, not the baby?

If it's a problem, why? If it's not a problem, why not?

Here's the background, from Olympic Athletes Getting Pregnant & Aborting to Boost Performance:

Mona Passignano, director of research at the Texas pro-life group Life Dynamics is quoted by Report quoting from a Finnish sports medicine expert: "Now that drug testing is routine, pregnancy is becoming the favourite way of getting an edge on competition." One Russian athlete told a reporter that as long ago as the '70s, gymnasts as young as 14 were ordered to sleep with their coaches to get pregnant--and then abort. The procedure is so well known it has made it to the textbooks. LifeSite found the method described in an online textbook in physiology by Dr. Poul-Erik Paulev of the Department of Medical Physiology, University of Copenhagen.

Professor Paulev writes that pregnancy seems to increase muscle strength in female athletes. "Female top athletes - just following the time when they gave birth to their first child - have set several world records. Of course, this is acceptable as a natural and unintended event. However, in some countries female athletes have become pregnant for 2-3 months, in order to improve their performance just after the abortion."

The links to the article and the textbook have expired. Does anybody have new links? I think the book in question is here (scroll down), and it says, "However, in some countries female athletes have become pregnant for 2-3 months, in order to improve their performance just following an abortion."

Snopes.com has this to say on the subject. Chicago Athlete makes mention of the practice.

But the question isn't so much as "Does this happen?" as "If a woman has every right to do as she pleases with her body, can this be wrong?"

    Abortion's impact on women

Dear Dr. X., Psychiatrist from Abortion Hurts has lots of food for thought for the prolife and prochoice alike.

    Betsy Hartmann vindicated

Deaths, Sickness Result From Abuse, Misuse of USAID, Ipas Family Planning Programs

Adamantly prochoice author Betsy Hartmann pointed out these issues and abuses in her groundbreaking work, Reproductive Righs and Wrongs. Steve Mosher of the Population Research Institute finds that Hart's concerns remain valid:

Population controllers are constantly talking about "reproductive health," and their burning desire to reduce maternal mortality worldwide. This is the excuse that they use for pushing contraception, legalized abortion, and sterilization on developing countries all over the world. .... [But] not only does the abortion/contraception-related work of USAID or Ipas fail in its mission to provide legitimate reproductive health, it actually causes more harm to women. Obsessed with reducing the fertility of as many of the poor as possible, the controllers have long advocated turning a blind eye to their other health needs. Here are a few examples:

Family planning programs deliberately court medical problems by denying routine medical care, such as physical exams, in the name of efficiency.

Other times they inadvertently or otherwise cause health problems, such as ectopic pregnancies subsequent to sterilization, which they then routinely ignore.

In a few cases, such as the dumping of unsterilized and dangerous IUDs on the developing world, or the testing of powerful, steroid-based contraceptives on unsuspecting women, they have engaged in acts that appear criminal in retrospect.

USAID cares more about how many women are sterilized or contracepted than about how many are made healthier.

Each of these practices injures or even kills women. This is what we mean by "reproductive health" mortality: The deaths that result from the abuse and misuse of family planning programs.

"I'd rather do less good service to more people, than perfect service to fewer people," Frances Hand Ferguson, one-time vice-president of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, said. (Emphesis mine -- ed.) ....

The situation is similar at USAID, which even officially rebuked Planned Parenthood for providing "unnecessary" health care. "All too often," they complained, "family planning programs impose numerous medical barriers to service which we are convinced hinder program effectiveness and impact, especially for hormonal contraceptives. Common examples of what we mean by medical barriers include unnecessary laboratory tests; excessive physical exams. . . excessive counseling and history -- taking in such a way as to include a lot of irrelevant information rather than the important things, the net effect being to increase waiting time and see few[er] clients."

Such practices lend credence to the assertion that, when it comes to women's health, USAID cares more about how many women are sterilized or contracepted than about how many are made healthier, even when health is defined strictly in "reproductive" terms.

Most so-called "modern" contraceptives have been tested in field trials on healthy women of the developed world. Their indiscriminate use on women in the developing world who are malnourished, anemic, or suffer from other health problems can have a devastating effect on women there. Many women in Bangladesh who were given Norplant, for instance, suffered serious side effects. According to Farida Ahktar, an activist concerned with the plight of poor women, Bangladeshi women who had received Norplant suffered side-effects much more serious than those admitted by Norplant's proponents: continuous bleeding far heavier than a normal menses, weakness in the limbs, severe pain and, significantly, blurred or double vision.

Dr. Stephen Karanja, the former Secretary of the Kenyan Medical Association and an obstetrician-gynecologist by training, often sees patients who have been harmed by these powerful, steroid-based contraceptives. "High blood pressure was never really a major African disease," he explains, "but now we have blood clots, liver problems, and problems with bleeding.

In Africa where tropical disease already cause women to be weak with poor blood levels, when they start bleeding irregularly or continuously because of these contraceptives, you literally reduce them to cripples.

The woman is the center of the African family. If you want to destroy the African family, attack the mother. And I ask myself, why does the US attack the center of the African family? These women walk around with difficulty because of anemia, with swollen legs, with livers damaged. There are women who are going into heart failure because of bleeding, because of [contraceptive] drugs."

The African women who are so cavalierly given powerful, steroid-based contraceptives are often not informed of the serious side effects that can result.

And, as Dr. Karanja suggests, the lack of follow-up care can in some cases be fatal. Take the danger of ectopic pregnancy following sterilization, for instance. Cutting the fallopian tubes of a woman does not always prevent conception, but it does prevent the developing embryo from entering the uterus. Instead, the embryo implants at the site of the blockage, a dangerous condition commonly known as a tubal pregnancy.

The problem is that the thin-walled tube cannot support a pregnancy beyond a couple months of gestation, and when it ruptures the resulting hemorrhaging is often deadly. Women who have been sterilized, assembly-line fashion, in population control campaigns are at particular risk of dying because they are given no warning about the possibility that they might become pregnant again in this way.

In some cases, the controllers do not merely turn a blind eye to problems, but have deliberately engaged in seemingly unethical, if not criminal, acts.

After the FDA in 1970 declared high-estrogen birth-control pills to be unsafe, the pharmaceutical companies were left with warehouses full of the now-unmarketable contraceptive. Syntex executives offered to sell USAID their entire stock at a heavily discounted price, an offer that USAID's Office of Population, less concerned about safety than in checking fertility cheaply, was only too happy to accept.

    ....

In the words of Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), "we have turned pregnancy into a sexually transmitted disease." Only when this "disease" is completely cured will the population controllers be content to cease their activities. And it doesn't matter how many women die from family planning abuses in the meantime.

Her patients are grateful. Which really pisses off some prochoicers.

British Doctor Under Investigation for Persuading Patients against Abortion

Dr. Tammie Downes is under fire with the medical board for having given her patients information that led them to reject abortion. The patients in question were grateful, and lodged no complaints, but a bastion of "choice" just can't stand the idea of happy moms and happy babies when there could have been tears and shredded fetuses:

In the Daily Mail interview, Dr. Downes said she asked women in crisis pregnancies, “What would have to change to make you see things differently? What would help you to see this baby as good news and not bad news?”

For defying the abortion-ideology that prevails in the British medical establishment, Dr. Downes is under investigation by the General Medical Council and may lose the right to practice medicine. The Guardian newspaper reported that the investigation was begun after a complaint by “a practising doctor involved in the pro-choice movement” accused Downes of breaching the GMC's Good Medical Practice Guidelines.

Now, in the UK, supposedly a legal abortion entails having two doctors examine the women and both agree that an abortion is actually in her best interests. In practice, of course, this means two doctors rubber-stamping an abortion request. But here Dr. Downes was, actually acting like a responsible physician, helping her patients.

Evidently the whole thing about wanting women to be able to choose "in consulation with her doctor" means ONLY that she should be able to choose abortion in consultation with her doctor. If she consults with her doctor and -- goddess forbid -- rejects abortion, why, she's been denied "choice"!

Only if choice equals abortion, and has nothing whatsoever to do with making an actual choice.

That says it all, doesn't it?

Amante Rongetti was the first person ever sentenced to die in the Illinois electric chair -- and his crime was the death of an illegal abortion patient, Loretta Enders. He was also the first physician ever sentenced to die for the death of a patient. His lawyer was able to convince the courts to spare Rongetti's life -- to free him, in fact. This allowed him to perform a fatal abortion on Elizabeth Palumbo the very next year. Nice work, guys.

    Psychosocial Adaptation in Pregnancy

The recent needless death of Laura Hope Smith, a prolife Christian girl who nevertheless ended up on the abortion table, underscores the need to convey to young women the fact that panic and the desire to bail out are normal and self-limiting. With that in mind, here's a reposting on my article on Psychosocial Adapation in Pregnancy.

Among the prochoice it's a given: there is a real "need" for abortion, as measured by the reality of women seeking abortions.

But is the request for abortion proof that abortion is necessary, or does it demonstrate some other principle?

Let's turn to a source that isn't addressing abortion in any way: Psychosicoal Adaptation in Pregnancy: Assessment of Seven Dimensions of Maternal Development, by Regina P. Lederman. The book grew out of a research project examining "the relationship of maternal psycholsocial adaptation in pregnancy to maternal anxiety and labor progress during childbirth." The research was mostly intended to assist prenatal educators and other involved in the birthing process.

The opening paragraph already launches into important territory:
It became apparent during the interviews with expectant mothers that all the women experienced some conflict in relation to the pregnancy and childbearing and that the patterns of response to conflict could be identified as either adaptive or maladaptive.

In other words, being conflicted about the pregnancy isn't a sign that the woman isn't ready to become a mother. It's a sign that she's normal.

The authors concluded that the pregnant woman faces the following developmental challenges:
    1. Acceptance of and adaptation to the pregnancy
    2. Progressive development in formulating a parental role and relationship with the coming child
    3. The impact of the pregnant woman's relationship with her partner on pregnancy adaptation and vice versa
    4. The pregnant woman's relationship with her mother
    5. Knowledgeability about and reasonable preparation for the events of labor
    6. Anticipation of mechanisms for coping with fears involving pain and loss of control in labor
    7. Coping with fears involving loss of self-esteem in labor

Passing through the developmental tasks of pregnancy is as natural as passing through the developmental tasks of any other life-change, such as puberty.

Lederman develops a conceptual model of pregnancy for a first-time mother as "a period of trasition between two lifestyles", that of the "soman-without-child" and that of the "woman-and-child". "Transition between the two lifestyles can be viewed as a paradigm shift, the paradigm being understood here as a constellation of current self-image, beliefs, values, priorities, behavior patters, relationships with others, and set of problem-solving skills."

Lederman notes that others before her have noted the "developmental and adaptive processes of pregnancy and childbirth".

She reiterates: "Initially, the woman's task is to accept the idea of pregnancy and assimilate it into hwer way of life. ....she may be assailed by doubts, weighing the pros and cons, rethinking her motives and the ultimate consequences of a changed reality. .... Some degree of ambivalance and vacillation is to be expected throughout pregnancy even when clear choices have been made."

In reviewing statements about the original "wantedness" of the pregnancy:
In many instances, the pregnancy was unplanned. .... All these subjects claimed that they wanted the baby anyway even though they may have initially contempltated abortion. (Emphasis mine) .... In most cases of unplanned pregnancy, the woman came to accept the pregnancy and used the 9 months to resolve conflicts and develop her motherhood role.

    Lederman addresses ambivalence:
Even for women who plan, accept, and enjoy pregnancy, there might be some ambivalance at first. Surprise or shock is often the initial reaction to the falidation of pregnancy. Caplan (1959) indicated that initial rejection of pregnancy is common, but that it is generally followed by acceptance at the end of the first trimester. .... Ambivalence is widely recognized as normal.

Lederman notes that it's important to assess how honestly the ambivalence is expressed, the reason for the ambivalence, the intensity of the ambivalence, and how sustained the ambivalence is.

She also looks at causes of ambivalence. Financial worries are pretty straightforward. "A further cause of ambivalence is the prospect of anticipated changes in lifestyle. If faced honestly and worked through, these changes need not be a serious hindrance to a woman's preparation for motherhood or her enjoyment of pregnancy."

To summarize: It's normal during the first trimester to be ambivalent, or even to reject the pregnancy. The fact that the woman rejects the pregnancy during the first trimester does not mean that she will continue to reject the pregnancy, or that she will reject the baby once it is born. It simply means that she is normal.

To "treat" this ambivalence with abortion is as irresponsible as to "treat" the bleeding of menstruation with a hysterectomy. Normal, self-limiting phenomena do not need to be "treated." The conscientious doctor will instead provide support to help the patient understand and deal with her symptoms.

Anniversary: Journey to safe abortion leaves Colorado woman dead

On November 13, 1972, 21-year-old Twila Coulter traveled from her home in Colorado to California for a saline abortion. Twila was injected with the saline on November 13, then expelled the dead fetus and the placenta the following day. Twila had no blood pressure and was bleeding from IV sites. She was given oxygen and three units of blood and transferred to a fully-equipped hospital.

Upon arrival, Twila was comatose and bleeding heavily. Doctors removed some retained pregnancy tissue and sutured numerous uterine injuries, but were unable to address her clotting problems. Twila died of cerebral hemorrhage.

    Today's Searches - mostly deaths

  • Vanessa Preston, the 22-year-old wife of a local minister, died in 1980 of complications of an abortion performed by National Abortion Federation member Curtis Boyd at his Fairmount Center in Dallas, Texas. (To his credit, Boyd and his staff did seem to have been prepared for an emergency, and to have responded appropriately, and he did try to warn other abortionists of the possibility of this happening to their patients.) Other Christian women and girls -- who in theory would know better and have a network to keep them from ending up as grist for the abortion mill -- who ended up dying from abortions include Marla Cardamone, Dawn Ravenelle, and most recently Laura Smith. Clearly the church is not effectively countering Screwtape's work on this. Going up against the Father of Lies, and against this massive propaganda juggernaut, armed only with a chastity pledge, "Abortion Stops a Beating Heart", and "God is Pro Life" is like going up against a Panzer division armed with a BB gun, a handful of cherry bombs, and a throwing star. The people who gain money and political power from these women have been disarming them, chewing them up, and spitting them out with a smug sneer on their lips by the millions. It's time we stopped letting them get away with it.

  • Somebody wanted to know where prolifers stand on the death penalty. Though statistically prolifers are more likely to oppose the death penalty than either prochoicers or the general public, individual results may vary. For myself, I'm not sure if you could more accurately describe me as opposing the death penalty except under certain very limited circumstances, or as supporting the death penalty but only under certain very limited circumstances. I think we should resort to it only when the perpetrator leaves us no other means of protecting others from his murderous impulses. That would be for murderers who remain an escape risk, murderers who either attempt or succeed in another killing in jail, and those who are capable of taking out hits from prison. In order to value all lives equally, we have to take out those who choose to remain a risk. Otherwise we are placing a greater value on their lives than on the lives of their victims. And really, when you get down to it, the two are apples and oranges. Show me an armed and aggressive fetus guilty of homicide, and I'll discuss the parallels.

  • Someone was searching for Emily Zall. She was one of the people who actually believed that supporting Planned Parenthood is supporting unbiased and accurate information for frightened women contemplating abortion. She signed a PP petition, adding "Government funded organizations must give accurate information." It would be lovely if Planned Parenthood was actually living up to Emily's expectations. Emily -- it was the unconscionable lies and malpractice Planned Parenthood perpetrated on my babysitter that pushed me off the fence into the prolife camp. I doubt that most decent people could know the kinds of thing this organization does and not want to see them shut down on the spot.

  • Janet Foster, 18 years old, died of a safe and legal septic abortion in California in 1971.

  • Someone wanted recent abortion pictures. Though they likely meant fetal remains, I do have photos of some of the women and girls who died recently:

Christin Gilbert died in 2005 at George "Teflon" Tiller's late abortion mill in Wichita, Kansas.

Laura Grunas, a young police officer in Florida, turned her gun on her lover then herself in the wake of an abortion in 2006.

Diana Lopez was sent home to bleed to death after an abortion at a California Planned Parenthood in 2002.

Holly Patterson died of sepsis after she was given RU-486 in an off-label manner at a California Planned Parenthood in 2002.

Laura Hope Smith died this past September on a Hyannis, Massachusetts abortion table.

Stacy Zallie took her own life after an abortion in 2002.

  • All I have on Josepha Seletz is that she works at the abortion facility that gave Oriane Shevin her fatal dose of RU-486.

  • I have the following on clinica para la mujer: Laurence Reich, Abortionist and Pervert; Press Release on Abortionist Braemer; and Abortionist Philip Rand.

  • Debra Gray was the first woman to die under the dubious care of abortionist Gideo Kioko at Maryland's notorious Hillview abortion mill. Suzanne Logan was injured at around the same time as Debra, but she lingered, paralyzed and mute, in a nursing home for several years before finally dying of her injuries.

  • Somebody wanted "abortion related to suicide". That's an entire post on its own merits. Though you can click on Stacy Zallie and Laura Grunas, above, for starters.

  • Somebody wanted "self abortion pictures". You can start here, or Google Geraldine Santoro. She's the poster child for abusive husbands. Never mind locking the bastards up. Just scrape their frightened wives and send them back for more.

  • And the most recent searcher wanted illegal horrifying abortion stories . Why limit yourself? Browse. I have enough horrifying stories from all manner of abortions. The legal status doesn't seem to have much impact. And if you don't believe that, tell me how any seedy abortion mills could do anyhing worse than Mosche Hachamovitch's staff did to Jammie Garcia, what Maber Medical Center did to Carolina Guitirrez, or what Ron Kuseski did to Christi Stile.

Learning to be a true friend

How to Serve a Pregnant Woman with the Heart of Christ

Eileen Smith -- Laura Hope Smith's mom -- if you are looking for a way to do outreach, you might start here.

    Just devastating!

Planned Parenthood is evidently making a tactical retreat from several of its Michigan facilities. They're shutting down Planned Parenthood of West Michigan and Planned Parenthood of Northern Michigan.

Planned Parenthood has seen $700,000 in funding vanish as the state Department of Community Health uses a new formula to determine where health dollars go. The new equation focuses on the percentage of clients who are below the poverty line rather than how many clients a center sees.

In other words, PP can no longer bill the taxpayer at exhorbitant rates for cheap and free "services" to people who can afford to go to a real health care center. The heart just breaks. Though this explains why Planned Parenthood of Mid-Michigan remains open for business. Their victims are poor and thus they can still bill the taxpayers for abusing them:

The following cases are from my notes involving Planned Parenthood of Mid-Michigan was a member of the National Abortion Federation.

  • A suit by patient L.H. alleged that she underwent an abortion by Dr. Alan Beer at Planned Parenthood of Mid-Michigan on July 16, 1985. No ultrasound was performed to determine gestational age. Beer ruptured the amniotic sac, then referred Harat to University of Michigan Medical Center, where five days later she gave birth to a 2 lb. 3 1/2 oz premature infant boy of approximately 25-29 weeks gestation. The infant, named Bryan, suffered developmental delay, intracranial bleeding, hydrocephalus, and disfigurement.

  • A suit by patient C.J. alleged that she was attended a counseling appointment on June 22, 1987, and expressed concern that her pregnancy might be tubal or otherwise abnormal because the of "spotty watery bleeding she was experiencing and because this pregnancy was unlike her previous pregnancies." C.J. was assured that a doctor would examine her on June 23, just prior to the abortion, and decide if an ultrasound was necessary. C.J. arrived on June 23 for abortion, was given medicine, and was "instructed to put on a hospital gown and to get on a table and put her feet into stirrups." Seabrook "appeared and attempted to abort her pregnancy without examining Plaintiff." C.J. heard Seabrook comment that he was not "getting much material." Three or four days later, C.J. again experienced watery bleeding and backache, and she "felt tired, depressed and very pregnant." She attempted to contact the clinic on June 27, and left a message on their answering machine. Her call was returned by Nurse Shaw who told her "that her feelings of pregnancy could last for several weeks and assured her that they would go away." On June 29, C.J. had to be taken home from class a by friend due to severe pain. She went to the clinic later that day, per instructions, and was given 3 pelvic exams by Nurse Froebel, who detected an adnexal abdominal mass, and recommended that C.J. see her private physician or go to a hospital. C.J. stayed home the next day, "exhausted and without any energy." She attempted to attend class the following morning, but had to be taken to a faculty lounge to lie down due to pain. An ambulance was called, and emergency room personnel determined that she was hemorrhaging. C.J. required emergency surgery due to a ruptured fallopian tube. She was hospitalized one week. The laboratory report had detected "scanty chorionic villi," indicating that the abortion had not removed the fetus. C.J. alleged negligence in failing to perform other tests and procedures to determine cause of her symptoms.

  • With patient S.R., the State of Michigan sued Planned Parenthood to recover $7400 Medicaid money paid out for care "for the injuries sustained ... as a result of the alleged negligence and malpractice of the defendants." S.R.'s June 29, 1983 abortion at Planned Parenthood was unsuccessful, and the continuing pregnancy was detected and aborted when S.R. sought a tubal ligation later at University of Michigan Hospital.

  • A suit by patient B.M. alleged breach of confidentiality: after her January 10, 1989 abortion, the medical lab that ran the pregnancy test sent a bill to her home, resulting in B.M.'s mother learning of the abortion.

There's nobody like an abortionist with two dead patients -- one of them a 15-year-old statutory rape victim so far advanced in pregnancy that every other abortionist in town turned her away -- to admire and emulate, if you're a Medical Student for Choice!

Somebody wanted information on abortion clinics closed in Alabama. Last year was a big year for that, with the state taking up a backlog in their inspections and shutting down a number of facilities, many member of them members of the National Abortion Federation. The cream of the crop, yessirree! See:

Somebody wanted Clara Duvall, who according to NOW died in 1929 of a self-induced abortion. NOW's story deviates from what Clara's daughter had written about the events. Interesting.

Somebody wanted information on the parents of Dr. TRM Howard. I guess they wanted to know what kind of parents manage to raise a guy who starts out as a civil rights champion and ends up being a seedy abortionist preying on poor and minority women.

Folks are still searching for Laura Hope Smith (pictured), who died just this past September during an abortion performed in Massachusetts by Dr. Rapin Osathanondh. Laura's mother, Eileen, met with him, and if her observations are correct he may be tottering on the brink of repentence. Pray that somebody is sent to witness to him. I called Carol Everett to ask her advice, since she had sent abortion patient Shary Graham home to bleed to death in 1982. Carol, I figured, would know what this guy is going through and how to reach him. Carol believes a face to face meeting would be best. If you're in Massachusetts, pray about whether or not the person who goes to witness to this man ought to be you. And Eileen, if you're reading this, get in touch. I want to help you pull together an outreach for girls in the church. I have decades of research I'd like to put at your disposal.

Somebody else was looking for EMW Women's Clinic, a National Abortion Federation member clinic. A real wholesome place. Their security guard turned out to be a rapist. And EMW's abortionist botched an abortion on a 16-year-old Indiana girl that Planned Parenthood brought across state lines to evade parental consent laws.

Someone wanted "self abortion". Not something I'd recommend, lest you end up like these women.

And, whoever is searching, yes, until 1972 it really was legal to kill Mormons in Missouri. In fact, it was your civic duty, since there was an Extermination Order on the books. So I guess that between 1838 and 1972, Mormons living or visiting in Missouri were only ambulatory blobs of tissue.

Someone else was looking for abortion and midwives. (For some reason the idea of midwives bloodying their hands with abortion is even more repulsive to me than the idea of doctors doing it.) I keep a list of women who died from illegal abortions performed by people with some medical training, which would include midwives.

I have this to say about "coathanger abortions".

And the most recent searcher wanted information on Spring Adams, the 13-year-old Idaho incest victim who was left in the care or her rapist-father while arrangements were made for a secret abortion. She was shot to death in her bed by her abuser. Nice work, guys. Maybe next time you could consider having the girl removed from the home and her rapist put in jail instead of acting as if an abortion is some magic bullet that will fix everything. But that's just me. I think girls like Spring Adams deserve better than an abortion and a return to their abusers for more rape, or for murder.

    Remembering a very close call

Today marks the anniversary of the date a patient of Steven Chase Brigham narrowly escaped with her life. Brigham performed a risky, likely illegal, third-trimester elective abortion on this high-risk patient in an outpatient setting, then failed to hospitalize her promptly when she was clearly going into shock.

But hey, trusting your life to Steve Brigham is perfeclty safe!

Anniversary: Teen scholar dies from safe, legal abortion

"Yvonne" Roe is one of the women Life Dynamics notes on their "Blackmun Wall" of women killed by legalized abortion. Yvonne was a 19-year-old student who died from sepsis on November 9, 1999 in Marrero, Louisiana, after undergoing a safe and legal abortion. She had been an All-American cheerleader and a member of the National Honor Society.

Life Dynamics cites the Clarion Ledger, November 11, 1999, and indicates that though they have information giving Yvonne's real name, they can not release it due to a confidentiality agreement.

    Anniversary: Fatal Georgia abortion

Demetrice Andrews, age 22, underwent an abortion on October 17, 1988. She became progressively ill, and was finally admitted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. Demetrice suffered multiple organ failure. She died on November 9, 1988.

It is ironic that Demetrice was admitted to Grady to be treated for abortion complications. Another woman, Jacqueline Reynolds, died just two years earlier, from complications of anesthesia administered for an abortion performed at Grady.

    Bringing it into the light

Even if these marvelous men and women don't succeed in getting Planned Parenthood's federal funding yanked, the hearings they are no doubt planning should shed some light in some very dark corners.

    Pray, pray, pray.

    Anniversary: One of a dozen

Eighteen-year-old Christine Mora underwent an abortion at Doctors' Surgical Center in Cypress, California -- an FPA (Family Planning Associates Medical Group) facility. She was about 17 weeks pregnant and a high school senior. The date was November 2, 1994. A nurse practitioner inserted laminaria to dilate Christine's cervix. Christine went home and returned the following day for the abortion.

Dr. Thomas Grubbs performed the D&E and sent Christine to recovery. Preparing to leave the clinic, Christine fell while unattended. Grubbs was called to check her, and noticed slurred speech and inappropriate responses. Somebody called an ambulance, and Christine was taken to La Palma Hospital, where she spent several hours in the emergency room, attended by her friend Robert. When Christine's father was finally located, Robert had to tell him about the abortion as well as about the hospitalization.

Christine was admitted to the intensive care unit, where her condition deteriorated until she was finally taken off life support at noon on November 8, and pronounced dead. Christine left an 18-month old child motherless.

The autopsy showed acute septicemia and hemorrage in the brain, along with some small cervical lacerations. It also revealed that Christine had a congenital heart defect called "foramen ovale," in which a connection between the two sides of her heart had not closed at birth as it was supposed to do. Her family filed a wrongful death suit.

The attorneys for Grubbs, Allred, and FPA claimed that Christine's heart defect, not the abortion, caused her death. But an expert reviewing the case for Christine's family said that the care provided to Christine at the FPA facility "fell below applicable standard" and that the "breach of standard care was the direct cause of Miss Mora's death." In particular, he faulted FPB because:

    • Grubbs had never examined Christine prior to the surgery. In fact, he'd had no contact with her at all prior to beginning her abortion.
    • "The anesthesia record says that Dr. Bruggs did the entire extraction procedure in three minutes (emphasis in original)," and that this haste caused the cervical lacerations.

The expert concluded that the amniotic fluid entered Christine's bloodstream through the cervical lacerations, causing her death. Oddly, Dr. David Grimes, the expert defending FPA, agreed that Christine's death was due to an amniotic fluid embolism and not to her heart defect. Grimes, however, claimed that the amniotic fluid had entered Christine's bloodstream when the placenta had detached, and not through the cervical lacerations. Grimes considered three minutes to be adequate time for a 17-week abortion. (Grimes had also spoken on behalf of notorious California abortionist Leo Keneally.)

The lawsuit had gone to trial, with Allred himself taking the stand, when prolifers discovered that Allred was being sued and complained that the medical board and news media were ignoring the death. As soon as the prolifers began agitating, FPA quickly settled with the family, stipulating confidentiality as part of the settlement.

Christine wasn't the only young woman to die from abortion at a facility owned by FPA head honcho Edward Campbell Allred. Others include:

Allred's facilities remain members of the National Abortion Federation despite these deaths.

    Good news from Capitol Hill

Pro-Life Women in Congress Start Legislative Caucus Opposing Abortion

The number of women in Congress has grown steadily over the years as the old boy's network has given way to a modern feminist world. Though groups like NARAL and Planned Parenthood would think to think all of the women are pro-abortion, several pro-life stalwarts have created a new caucus for pro-life women.

Powerful pro-life women leaders are making a difference for mothers and their unborn babies in Congress and they have formed a new outreach for their efforts: the Congressional Pro-Life Women's Caucus.

    ....

Just last week, the co-chair of that Caucus, Republican Rep. Marilyn Musgrave of Colorado, provided a strong, pro-life, pro-woman voice at Congress' first abortion hearing. Her testimony was a passionate beacon for the Mexico City Policy that protects taxpayers from supporting groups that promote or perform abortions overseas.

    ....

Dannenfelser said the pro-life women "are strong, articulate, forceful champions who will not back down" and are "unflinching allies of unborn children and the mothers in poor nations who need true assistance and support to address their poverty -- not abortion."

    Today's searches

Somebody wanted "illegal abortion deaths 2005". Well, technically the fatal abortion LeRoy Carhart performed on Christin Gilbert (pictured) in 2005 at George "Teflon" Tiller's late-term abortion mill was illegal. Kansas law only allows post-viabililty abortions to protect a woman from permanent injury or death. Prior to the fatal third-trimester abortion, Chritin was a perfectly healthy young woman. Her only "ailment" was an extra chromosome, i.e. Down syndrome.

Another searcher wanted "death anesthesia". Those I've identified related to abortion are here.

The death of Laura Smith (pictured) is here. She died this past September on a Massachusetts abortion table. Dr. Rapin Osathanondh was the abortionist.

Another search was "abortions in the old days". I have a lot on that. The dead are listed according to who took fatal instrument in hand: amateurs, paramedical people, or physicians. More about abortion pre-Roe in the US is available here.

Someone wanted information on the 1982 death of abortion patient Myrta Baptiste. Her abortion was counted by the Centers for Disease Control as due to illegal abortion because though it took place in an opely operating clinic, and no charges were ever filed, the doctor's license was suspended by the medical board at the time. The other four women who died at that Florida facility -- Ruth Montero, Maura Morales, and Shirley Payne were all counted as legal abortion deaths.

Someone else was searching for Vikram Kaji. I only have a brief comment about how he worked for Stephen Chase Brigham, but this guy really deserves a page of his own. And I have got to fix that page! I must have done it at three in the morning or something.

For "women dead because of abortion", click here. Legal, illegal, and self-induced are all there.

And just scroll down for information about Alberto Hodari, who performed the fatal abortions on Chivon Williams and Tamia Russell. What a treasure he is! What a role model for Medical Students for Choice at Wayne State University. Way to go, kids!

    Wednesday, November 07, 2007

Now there's a role model for you!

"Medical Students for Choice (sic)" have invited Alberto Hodari to speak at Wayne State University.

As Jill Stanek pointed out, it's unlikely any of those admiring students attending the seminar will ask exactly why Hodari was okay with performing an illegal third-trimester abortion on Tamia Russell, a 15-year-old sexual abuse victim who died under this man's tender ministrations.

These admiring students are also unlikely to question Hodari (pictured) about the death of Chivon Williams under his care. They'll likely not question him about the nearly two-dozen lawsuits against him and his facility, such as the woman who had to be hospitalized and needed surgery after Hodari misdiagnosed how far along her pregnancy was and sent her home with retained placenta. They'll not ask about the woman whose pregnancy he failed to verify before proceeding with an abortion procedure carried out to kill a fetus that wasn't there -- puncturing the woman's uterus and leaving her with permanent damage. They'll not ask about the woman whose internal organs he slashed up so badly that she needed a hysterectomy.

He does abortions. That tells these gullible kids everything they think they need to know about this man. In case you're searching for your names on-line kids -- Kia Jones, Jonathan Oakes, Katie O'Connell, and Cynthia Velting-Kidder -- read this, read the links, and re-consider if this guy is really who you want to be when you grow up.

And consider this: Even after all he's done, he's still good enough for the National Abortion Federation, the abortionists' guild you're all hoping one day to be good enough to join. Well, there's good news on that front, kids -- you don't have to be good. You just have to be willing to do abortions and pay your dues. They'll plug you as if you could do no wrong. No matter how bad you are, NAF will assure abortion-minded women that you're an excellent doctor who adheres to the highest standards of care. No matter how many women you maim and kill.

Mostly nauseating, but with a few pithy moments

In their "health" section, of all places, the New York Times profiles abortionist Susan Wicklund and her book about how wonderful and rewarding it is to be an abortionist.

Why did she become an abortionist? Because she wasn't particularly impressed with her own liberating and empowering safe and legal abortion:

She became pregnant. She had an abortion. It was legal, but it was ghastly.

Her counseling, she recalls, was limited to instructions to pay in advance, in cash, and to go to the emergency room if she had a problem. During the procedure itself, her every question drew the same response: “Shut up!”

Determined that abortion at her hands would be, I dunno, a fulfilling and satisfying experience I guess, Wicklund took up the curette as soon as she could and never looked back. She wrote a new book to "encourage more open discussion of abortion and its prevalence."

As if it's not been talked to death. How many women are blogging their abortions? Proudly wearing the Planned Parenthood "I had an abortion" t-shirt. (Though, "Ask me about the one I killed" might be more to the point.)

    Wicklund's denial, however, runs deep:

“We don’t talk about it,” she said in a telephone interview. “People say, ‘Nobody I know has ever had an abortion,’ and that is just not true. Their sisters, their mothers have had abortions.”

If your sister, your mother, jumped off a bridge, would you do it too? Is this a "jump on the bandwagon" approach to promoting abortion. Don't be left out! Everybody else has had an abortion! What's hindering you?

But Dr. Wicklund acknowledges that abortion is an issue fraught with dilemmas. In the book, she describes witnessing, as a medical student, the abortion of a 21-week fetus. She writes that at the sight of its tiny arm she decided she would perform abortions only in the first trimester of pregnancy. She says late-term abortions should be legal, but her decision means she occasionally sees desperate women she must refuse to help.

I thought if you refused to do an abortion, the woman would reflexively reach for a coathanger, ream herself out, and drop dead. Isn't that why it "needs" to be legal and readily available? What's the matter, Dr. Wicklund? Squeamish if you have to actually see the arms and legs, instead of packing them off to the pathology lab and letting somebody else confront the fruits of your labor?

Dr. Wicklund describes her horror when she aborted the pregnancy of a woman who had been raped, only to discover, by examining the removed tissue, that the pregnancy was further along than she or the woman had thought — and that she had destroyed an embryo the woman and her husband had conceived together.

But if all it was was tissue, what's the big deal? Her husband's tissue, the rapist's tissue, it's all just tissue, right? Unless it's not. And then why are you destroying it?

The closing notes that Wicklund loves abortion because “It is one of the few areas of medicine where you are not working with a sick person...."

God forbid a doctor work with sick people.

Not to mention I thought all these women were having abortions "in consultaion with their doctors". Ya know, for medical reasons. You mean abortion is something that healthy women are doing to healthy fetuses? I thought that was a lie put out by antichoicers.

There's something fundamentally wrong with finding destruction of human life so satisfying.

The best of 40 Days for Life

From the 40 Days for Life Blog:

    HOUSTON, TEXAS:

During course the course of the 40 Days for Life, countless women went to local Crisis Pregnancy Centers for free pregnancy tests and Christian counseling. Praise God! Many were sent by the pro-lifers manning the prayer vigil and it was reported to us that many others were showing up at these CPC’s with the literature we were handing out at Planned Parenthood. It was obvious to those of us who pray regularly at Planned Parenthood that their business was down during this campaign. When we ended, during the course of the morning over 175 people came out to pray. One of the new Planned Parenthood escorts as she was helping to usher the moms in seemed very taken aback when she heard the loving kind way we speak to and counsel the moms. She then proceeded to stop escorting and just observed for a while. Shortly thereafter she was seen taking a Rosary out and started praying with us from inside Planned Parenthood’s fence! We know that Planned Parenthood lies to them about our approach, and in fact at least 3 of the escorts during this campaign told us that we “weren’t what they expected.” Almost to a person the participants in this campaign told us that they wanted to continue, this next week they will be contacted to schedule their times. Our goal is to eventually man every hour that they are open.

    ....

    TUCSON, ARIZONA:

Praise God!!!!! Tucson ended our Vigil today (only for this week) with a promise to continue by registering families who will go one day per month or more to pray at the abortuaries in our town. We already have 4 families for Saturdays! Next is our super good news … PP was not killing today, the second time during the 40 Days Vigils that they were not killing on their busiest day of the week! Additionally, the private abortuary, located in the same private property complex, was not killing yesterday, the second time during the 40 Days, and again, on their busiest day of the week!

    ....

    WASHINGTON, D.C.:

The 15-plus babies that we know were saved was the biggest blessing. ....

    ....

    ROCKLAND COUNTY, NEW YORK:

Our 40 Days or Life has touched many lives. Girls that have had abortions shared their stories with our prayer angels and are seeking healing. Care Net, right across the street from Planned Parenthood, has been kept very busy throughout the Forty Days for Life Vigil. People stopping and joining from the street and wanting to give money to support the PRO-LIFE CAUSE. So many had no idea that Planned Parenthood promotes abortion and promiscuity and are amazed when we are standing there to PRAY THEM AWAY. The CEO of Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic Inc. tried to stage a rally against the 40 Days for Life and the press coverage backfired and was more pro-life than pro-abortion.

Yet another anniversary with a doc implicated

On November 6, 1923, Mrs. Agnes Wendt died at Chicago's St. Anne's Hospital from complications from an abortion performed there that day. Dr. Irene Wagoner was exonerated by the coroner, but nevertheless indicted for murder in Agnes' death.

    Anniversary: Another doc, another death

On November 4, 1928, 22-year-old Anna Borndal died at the office of Dr. Lou E. Davis of Chicago, from complications of an abortion performed there that day. Davis was held by the coroner for unintentional manslaughter. She was indicted by a grand jury for homicide.

    Unusual site for the suicidal

I've been searching for a very funny but poignant and to-the-point addressing the would-be suicide. Here's what I'm turning up:

  • Before You Kill Yourself

Does anybody remember the site? It mentioned how much you hurt the people you leave behind, how you'd better sort out what afterlife there is or isn't because if you do kill yourself you'll be there, and had some weird stuff about a girl who supposedly scribbled her suicide note so illegibly that her bewildered parents thought she had coprophilia.

    Anybody?
  • The baby that refused to die

We're twinseparable! Happy with his brother, the boy who refused to die

When Rebecca Jones learned, 10 weeks into her pregnancy, that she was carrying twins, she and her husband were excited, "over the moon."

Then an ultrasound at 20 weeks revealed heartbreaking trouble. One twin, Gabriel, was half the size of his brother Ieuan. His heart was enlarged to three times its normal size. Doctors feared that Gabriel would suffer a heart attack or stroke and die in the womb, endangering Ieuan's life. They recommended a procedure to beat the Grim Reaper to the ailing baby, certain that this would pose less threat to the healthy twin's life.

Rebecca was heartbroken. Doctors told her there was no way Gabriel could live even if he survived to birth. They presented the choice to Rebecca as between risking the life of the healthy child in order to possibly have Gabriel be born alive but die alone, versus a quick death in utero with his brother at his side. This convinced Rebecca that the procedure would be best for both babies.

So when Rebecca was 25 weeks pregnant, doctors tried to sever Gabriel's umbilical cord, thus cutting off his blood supply and killing him. But the cord was too tough to cut through. So they decided to divide the placenta, thus severing the connection between the twins, figuring that Gabriel would quicky die and Ieuan could survive.

A grieving Rebecca put her hands over her gravid belly, saying her goodbyes to her unborn son.

But the next morning, Rebecca could still feel both babies kicking. Doctors were astonished when they could still hear two heartbeats. Doctors dubbed the feisty little fetus "Rocky". And as time went on, Gabriel gained weight and his heart started to reduce in size.

Doctors believe that dividing the placenta may have evened out the imbalance between the twins, allowing Gabriel to get the nutrients he needed.

At 31 weeks, the boys were delivered by c-section. Ieuan weighed in at 3 pounds 8 ounces, and Gabriel at 1 pound 12 ounces. After a NICU stay, the boys went home. Now, at seven months of age, Ieuan weighs 15 pounds and Gabriel 12 pounds 6 ounces.

Rebecca says that the boys always stay close, always holding hands. "The boys are so healthy, they have huge appetites too. Ieuan is the noisy one, while Gabriel is always laughing, it's like he's just so happy to be here. There is such a strong bond between them. They are always holding hands and if one cries, the other reaches out to comfort him. Doctors tried to break their bond in the womb, but they just proved it couldn't be broken."

And, God willing, doctors will use what Gabriel taught them to save other babies with similar problems.

Sanitation for All the Goal at World Toilet Summit

Though it includes such ideas as a solar-powered commode that runs without water, the 2007 World Toilet Summit is no bathroom novelty show.

Participants at New Delhi's four-day gathering of experts, toilet aficionados, and even royalty from 44 countries are grappling with health and sanitation issues that endanger almost one-third of the world's people who don't have toilets.

The United Nations estimates there are some 2.6 billion people without access to basic sanitation, over half living in India and China, a stark reminder of the challenges facing these developing nations despite their recent rampant economic growth.

"In India there are 700 million people who do not have access to safe and hygienic toilets. The waterborne diseases this causes kill 500,000 children every year, mostly from diarrhea," said Bindeshwar Pathak, the head of the Sulabh Sanitation and Social Reform Movement.

The theme of the seventh annual toilet summit — co-hosted by Pathak's group, the Indian government and the Singapore-based World Toilet Organization — is reaching the U.N.'s goal of halving the number of people living without water and sanitation by 2015.

One new technology being touted for areas with limited water is a waterless toilet produced by African Sanitation. Using solar heat and a bit of biomass -- such as shredded grass clippings -- the toilets convert waste into oderless compost.

Anniversary: The death of "Creepy Kenny"

In tallies of murdered abortion workers, abortion supporters never count clinic owner/administrator Kenneth Yellin, who was gunned down outside his Chicago abortion facility November 3, 1979. Yellin had been shot in the head five times in an apparent gangland execution. But new stories didn't follow the pattern we're accustomed to: that of lamenting the assassination (presumably by prolifers) of a hapless abortion provider. Instead, coverage featured such headlines as "'Creepy Kenny' died in the gutter where he belonged."

"He left a trail of sour deals, bad paper, and civil suits," one article said, noting that Yellin had run a series of businesses opened with money his father gave him (a paint and body shop, a car dealership, an import car business, and Kenneth Yellin Enterprises -- whatever that was). The story went on, "He put his business acumen and money into concerns that were characterized by their increasing sordidness and which have known links to organized crime. He ran a marriage counseling service which a former prosecuting attorney said was a front for prostitution, and was then believed to have operated or invested in X-rated movie theaters. The abortion business seemed a natural progression."

Yellin, stories said, picked up the nickname "Creepy Kenny" as a child, when he was reputed to pull stunts such as putting sand in the gas tanks of parked cars.

His attempts to get a degree ended in failure when he was flunked out of four colleges.

Yellin was known for living high and on the edge. He had previously been arrested in his home town "for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest... charges he would beat on a technicality. He was driving a maroon Corvette and wearing a $2000 leather coat." An attorney reflected on Yellin after his death, saying, "I remember him driving around town in a big white Cadillac convertible. There was always a blond sitting next to him. Different blonds each time."

Yellin's facility, originally called "Women's Medical Facility," had been closed by the state for licensing violations, but Yellin reopened it as Biogenetics. Yellin had been passing himself off as "Dr. York" at Biogenetics, performing physical examinations on unsuspecting abortion patients. "Dr. York" was accused of battery for squeezing a woman's breasts during an 'examination,'" although for unreported reasons the charges were later dropped.

An undercover investigator at Biogenetics reported that Yellin scolded a recovery room worker, telling her, "We're giving out too many cookies. Cookies cost money." Yellin was this stingy with his cookies even though the patients had been fasting for a day prior to their abortions and were coming into recovery weak and hungry.

After Yellin's murder, police went to his "elaborate" apartment and found "his live-in girlfriend, a tall, thin blond named Melody Forster" stuffing cash into a suitcase. Forster later turned up in Florida. "There were pornographic video cassettes and assorted sexual paraphernalia stacked near the bed," reports said.

During the investigation, evidence turned up that Yelling had recently lost around $200,000 "in a confidence scheme." Police also sought out "Robin Dragin, a professional burglar with mob connections," who ran another Chicago abortion clinic that competed with Biogenetics for customers.

"Yellin reportedly held a secret interest in a second abortion clinic on the Far South Side that burned down. The fire is being reinvestigated for possible arson. Yellin was a heavy gambler and made high-risk investments. Although he made a 'fortune' from his business, Yellin owed a lot of money because he spent and invested it faster than he could make it."

Yellin's estate included "five suburban buildings worth more than half a million dollars," $550,000 in personal property, "six autos, three boats, stocks and bonds worth more than $200,000." Yellin left assets of $1.3 million, yet managed to die $1 million in debt.

Yellin got no sympathy from the press -- or from anybody else, it seems -- on the grounds of "providing vital reproductive health care services." Rather, the fact that he was entangled in a seedy abortion mill was treated as just one more reason society didn't mourn his death. One article quoted a police investigator as commenting, "What goes around comes around. He was a butcher. He got what he deserved. He died in the gutter where he belonged."

    Kenneth Yellin's murder remains unsolved.

Anniversary: Perforated bowel and a laxative

Twenty-six-year-old Moris Helen Herron went to Bakersfield, California doctor William D. Stanley for a tubal ligation in October of 1983. When Stanley examined Helen, he informed her that she was pregnant and asked if she wanted him to perform an abortion when he did the tubal ligation. Helen consented, and on October 23, Stanley operated on her. After Helen went home, she suffered weakness, vomiting, and severe pain. She called Stanley, who instructed her to take a laxative.

Helen developed a high fever, and died on November 3. An autopsy found feces and feculent fluid in Helen's abdominal cavity from a hole in her intestines. Helen's mother, Inez Herron, sued Stanley on behalf of her two surviving children, and Stanley settled out of court for $200,000.

When a local pro-life group wrote to Stanley to chastize him for his treatment of Helen, he wrote back, saying, "Elective abortion refers to termination of a live viable pregnancy upon the request of the mother. I have never performed this service or even offered it." He claimed that he was merely performing a D&C on Helen after a miscarriage.

NOTE: A previous researcher evidently became confused when reading the name "Moris" on the lawsuit filed by Helen's mother, Inez. Therefore, some reports of this case mistakenly identify the dead woman as being named Inez Herron.

Spiritual reflections on who the real Enemy is

As 40 Days for Life draws to a close, I'd like to revisit an old post:

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

    Ephesians 6:12 NAS

When it comes to the abortion battle, it seems the lines are drawn pretty clearly: prolife vs. prochoice. No matter which side you align yourself with, it's easy to tell who is friend and who is foe, right? If you're prolife, the prochoicers are the enemy. If you're prochoice, the prolifers are the enemy. Right? Well, it might be possible to put forth that argument from a purely secular perspective (although I don't think it holds water even from a secular perspective). But from a Christian perspective, the idea that this is a war of prolife versus prochoice -- or even "good guys" versus "bad guys" -- is bogus. The Bible makes it pretty clear who the Enemy is. We can explore this Enemy at length at another time. Right now, we'll look closely at Ephesians 6:12, as a reminder of who the enemy is not:

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Let's turn to the Greek Lexicon and see what we can find about the words used in this passage.

We can start with the Greek word transliterated "pale" (pal ay). This word is used only in this passage, and means "wrestling (a contest between two in which each endeavours to throw the other, and which is decided when the victor is able to hold his opponent down with his hand upon his neck); the term is transferred to the Christian's struggle with the power of evil." So it looks like we're not talking about a "live and let live" situation, in which our Enemy will let us be if we ignore it. We're engaged in a wrestling match in which one, and only one, can emerge victorious.

We can then look at the Greek words transliterated "sarx," indicating "flesh (the soft substance of the living body, which covers the bones and is permeated with blood)...used of natural or physical origin, ...denotes mere human nature, the earthly nature of man apart from divine influence, and therefore prone to sin and opposed to God;" and "haima" (hah ee ma), "blood." We can take this then pretty literally -- we're not fighting flesh and blood, mortal creatures, men and women like ourselves.

Well, then, what are we fighting? Here's where it really gets interesting.

The word translated here as "powers" is the Greek transliterated "exousia" (ex oo see ah). Here are some of the ways this word is defined:
    • power of choice, liberty of doing as one pleases
    • physical and mental power
    • the ability or strength with which one is endued, which he either possesses or exercises
the power of authority (influence) and of right (privilege)
    • the power of rule or government (the power of him whose will and commands must be submitted to by others and obeyed)
    • the leading and more powerful among created beings superior to man, spiritual potentates

I find it fascinating that Paul chose this word here, a word that means not just those in authority or those with power, but free will itself. Although this idea is not, I would presume, the crux of the passage, I think we'd do well to remember that our own free will is often ready to trip us up. The very capacity for making choices which the abortion advocates hold up as the ultimate good seems here cast as a potential pitfall. This stands as a warning to all Christians no matter what side of the abortion battle they've stationed themselves on: just because we can does not mean we should. Having been given free will, and the power to make choices, we are given at every moment of our lives the capacity to rebel against God and set ourselves up as petty tyrants over our own lives and the lives of those around us.

Again, though, this is an interesting side concept. Biblical scholars point to the meaning of this word in this passage as focusing on spiritual powers having control in the world, and over people.

"World forces of this darkness" is a concept built of three words, two defined here:
    • The word translated as "world forces" is transliterated "kosmokrator." This word is used only in this passage, and means "lord of the world, prince of this age; the devil and his demons."
    • The word translated as "darkness" is transliterated "skotos," meaning "darkness of night; darkness of darkened eyesight or blindness; metaphorically of ignorance respecting divine things and human duties, and the accompanying ungodliness and immorality, together with their consequent misery in hell; persons in whom darkness becomes visible and holds sway."

We can pull this together into a picture of Satan and the way he works in the world, where he has dominion. Note also, that the word translated "darkness" can refer to "persons in whom darkness becomes visible and holds sway," this doens't indicate that these persons themselves are that which we are fighting, but the darkness that is being manifested in them. This is, perhaps, a fancy way of restating, "Hate the sin, love the sinner."

The third concept of what we are fighting is translated here, "spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places."

The word translated "spiritual" is transliterated "pneumatikos," and translates as "sprit." The specific meaning that fits in this passage is "belonging to a spirit, or a being higher than man but inferior to God."

The word translated as "wickedness" is transliterated "poneria," meaning "depravity, iniquity, wickedness; malice; evil purposes and desires." That's pretty straightforward.

The word translated "heavenly" is transliterated "epouranios," which translates pretty much into our current "heavenly." We tend to think of "heavenly" as meaning "good," or "superior," but in this passage it can't be indicitave of anything good or superior, and therefore must designate that we're talking about a spiritual realm, a higher reality, and not the physical world visible around us. This stands in contrast to what this passage says we do not contend against, i.e. "flesh and blood," or worldly enemies.

This is not meant to be the final word on how we can apply this passage, either in our lives or as we struggle to put an end to abortion. But it does make a good starting point for though and discussion.

Answered prayers for moms of abortion victims?

Aimee Herd of Breaking Christian News has posted the following words from Eileen Smith, mother of Laura Hope Smith, who died just this past September from an abortion in Massachusetts:

It was 7pm, we had just finished dinner and settled down to watch the evening news. My husband's cell phone rang with Laura's name on the ID. We always loved hearing from her. Laura was so full of life, your spirits were lifted just by talking to her. Except this time it wasn't her voice. There was guttural screaming and sobbing on the other end by a voice I did not immediately recognize. I heard the words "Laura", "Hospital" and the worst one, "Not Breathing," and then "abortion".

My brain tilted, my heart sank, and life as I knew it ceased. It was Laura's friend Karen on the phone. She told me what happened, that Laura was having an abortion and something went terribly wrong. Karen was at the ER and the Doctor needed to talk to me. What Karen didn't know was that Laura had arrived at the ER already deceased. The EMT's found her this way at the abortion mill. The hospital was looking for next of kin to give the news to first, and Karen wasn't kin.

"Laura's gone" the doctor told me. I wanted to hear "50-50 chance"...I would even accept "90-10 chance." But the word "chance" was not in the doctor's statement. All hope was gone, along with my daughter.

My beautiful, precious daughter, whom we had adopted at age 5, and had immediately forgotten that we didn't give her birth. Laura became as much ours as our natural born children. She was a gift we didn't ask for, and one we treasured. I have questions that I can never get answers to—the "whys." Why didn't she come to us? Why didn't she tell us she was pregnant? Why did she think that abortion was the solution to her problem?

Laura was raised in a loving, Christian home. Laura got upset when others she knew had abortions. Laura loved children. Laura was pregnant with her fiancé's baby; he loved her and says he didn't believe in abortion.

There are some questions that I did get answers for. I met with the doctor who aborted my grandchild, and who saw my daughter take her last breath. He would only meet me in a public place, without my husband. We talked for an hour and a half. Based on that meeting I believe I know what happened to Laura. He denies doing anything that caused her death. When we were done talking about Laura, I prayed, and asked God if there was anything He would have me say to the doctor. This is what I said next.... "The blood of my daughter is on your hands; the blood of my grandchild is on your hands; the blood of every life you have ever taken is on your hands," and I went on from there. He was silent with his head hung low.

When I was ready to leave, I asked him if he would think about my daughter, and consider not doing any more abortions—he said he would think about it. When I left there I was praying, and said to God, "Can You stop this man from doing abortions? Is this what You have in mind, that he might even stop doing them?" I was thinking too small. I thought if one girl changed her mind [about having an abortion], I could find some comfort. I then realized that the Lord had much bigger plans. I have never experienced in my life, such tragedy, nor such grace.

I know that God is going to bring good out of my daughter's death. What a horrible thing; for my daughter to be associated with abortion. But, if God's going to use it for good and for His glory, then so be it. We're going very public with a very shameful, private thing because I believe God wants to use it to save lives.

I believe the truth will come out, and the light of God will shine on this. Laura's death has had tremendous impact around the country, and even into Canada, without the local news mentioning it. It just came out in the secular media this week—5 weeks after Laura's death.

I now believe it is my calling to keep telling Laura's story to the Church, and the world. I naively believed that abortion was not a choice for a Christian girl. A Pastor had even apologized to me and the Lord, for not speaking about this from his pulpit. We both had false assumptions. This is a problem in the Church, and one that needs to be spoken about from the pulpits. We have to take the "A" word out of the closet, put it out in the open, and discuss it. And maybe, possibly, hopefully, we'll even become active against it.

Please keep our family in your prayers, and please tell someone Laura's story.

Debbie Cardamone, mother of Marla Anne Cardamone, who died of an unwanted abortion in 1989, has been praying for a chance to network with the other devastated parents of women and girls who died in safe, legal abortions. Too often prolifers dismiss their daughters as "baby killing tramps" who just reaped what they sowed, and prochoicers dismiss their daughters as collateral damage in the war to keep abortion legal, readily available, and as lightly regulated as humanly possible. This makes being the loved one of a woman who died from a legal abortion particularly lonely.

Through Aimee, I've passed Debbie's phone number along to Eileen. Debbie and her husband are hoping for a call, so that the two families can comfort each other. This will be an answered prayer for the Cardamone family.

And in closing, I'd like to focus on one portion of what Eileen had to say:

God willing, Laura's needless death may turn this man around, bringing healing to his soul and to those his conversion impacts. Pray, pray, pray.

Early evidence looks like we may be getting two answered prayers: two families connected who need someone to share their grief, and an abortionist who looks close to repentance.

    40 Days for Life vigil

If you can't get to an abortion facility yourself for the penultimate 40 Days for Life prayer vigil, please consider being there spiritually at Magee Women's Hospital, where Marla Cardamone was browbeaten into an unwanted, fatal abortion in 1989.

Magee is part of an abortionist training program, which thank God their doctors are allowed to opt out of. But the doctors that opt out are not given training in treating the complications suffered by their colleagues' unfortunate patients.

Pray, pray, pray. And if you can commit to a time to pray for Magee, please let me know. Right now I'm trying to cover the entire 24 hours by myself.a

Somebody was looking for "safe at home self abortions". First of all, there's no such thing as an abortion that's safe for your baby. Second, there's no such thing as an abortion that's safe for your soul. Third, are you NUTS? Do you want to end up like Daisy, Penny, or Kris? The best you can hope for is to live to repent.

William Baxter Waddill is the creepy S.O.B. who got away with strangling a live born infant in the NICU because the jury found out that the state of California had a definition of "death" that wasn't covered in the trial. Waddill, of course, by proving his commitment to providing the mother with a dead baby regardless of the location the killing takes place in, managed to get himself hired by National Abortion Federation member Family Planning Associates Medical Group, a chain where the following women and girls suffered fatal abortions: Deanna Bell, Chanelle Bryant, Patricia Chacon, Laniece Dorsey, Josefina Garcia, Denise Holmes, Susan Levy, Christine Mora, Kimberly Neil, Joyce Ortenzio, Mary Pena, and Tami Suematsu.

Hiding the bodies in plain sight

Legend has it that the Centers for Disease Control keep track of abortion deaths. The case of Latachie Veal should lay that legend to rest. Latachie was 17 years old, and 22 weeks pregnant, when Robert Dale Crist performed an abortion on her at Houston's West Loop Clinic November 2, 1991.

According to Latachie's family, she bled heavily at the clinic, and cried out to the staff for help. They told her that her symptoms were normal, and sent her home. Several hours later, Latachie stopped breathing. Her brother-in-law called 911 while her sister did CPR, to no avail. Latachie was dead on arrival at Ben Taub Hospital.

If Latachie's death certificate had been filled out properly, with the notation of the abortion in the proper box, using the proper ICD-9 code, then theoretically the National Center for Health Statistics would spot the abortion code and report it. But most states send only a statistical sample of their death certificate data to the NCHS. So the CDC would be notified of Latachie's death through the NCHS only if the death certificate was properly filled out, and if Latachie's death certificate was among those abstracted and sent to the NCHS.

But still, according to abortion defenders, Latachie's death would nevertheless be automatically reported to the Centers for Disease Control. They're not clear on who is supposed to report the death. Was West Loop Clinic supposed to report it? Was Crist supposed to report it? Was Ben Taub Hospital supposed to report it? Was the medical examiner supposed to report it? Was the Texas Department of Health supposed to report it? The CDC says it gets abortion death information from abortionists, abortion facilities, hospitals, and state health departments, but it does not mention that the reporting is not mandatory.

This does not mean that Latachie's death went utterly unnoticed.

Latachie's family filed suit, retaining the flamboyant "Racehorse" Haynes as their attorney. The case was highly publicized, both in Texas and in Missouri, where Crist had performed a fatal abortion on Diane Boyd, a 19-year-old developmentally disabled woman who had been raped in the institution where she'd lived.

The mainstream publicity went beyond the usual newspaper articles, with Crist giving television interviews calling the publicity "media hype" and "a political event." Haynes retorted, "I wish he would have a copy of the 911 tape.... If he would talk to the parents, if he would talk to the sister as she gave her CPR or talk to the brother-in-law as she was breathing her last breath and see then if he thinks it's a media event."

With all this mainstream publicity in two states, prolife organizations picked up the story, and it was reported in prolife newsletters around the nation. A lot of people very quickly found out about the abortion death of 17-year-old Latachie Veal. But did the CDC?

At the 1992 National Abortion Federation Risk Management Seminar in Dallas, Crist spoke openly of Latachie's death. (He did not, of course, mention her name; I've concluded that he's discussing Latachie's death, since there's been no evidence of any another 17-year-old abortion patient of his who died in 1991.) Present at that Risk Management Seminar, where Crist chattered about Latachie's death, were two -- count 'em -- two -- staffers from the Centers for Disease C
