HT: Blithering Idiot

Senator, you seem to assume that the doctor doing an abortion is incapable of making a wrong decision. Or if he does make a mistake, he'll just recognize and fix the problem immediately.

Yes, Senator Obama, we do suspect that here are doctors won't seek adequate medical care for these babies on their own initiative. Because they have a history of sticking these babies in a closet to die. Of strangling them. Of drowning them in a bucket.

Yes, Sanator Obama, we know that when a baby is born alive during an abortion, a doctor has already "made that assessment" -- presumably that the baby in question isn't "viable" -- that is, able to survive outside the womb. But if the baby is born alive, the doctor in question has already established in a pretty palpable way that his clinical judgment isn't all it's cracked up to be. He already thought the baby wouldn't survive the abortion process. Now are we to trust him to judge the baby's chance of survival when she's already proved to be much more tenacious of life than he expected?

Senator Obama , you indicate that it's somehow just burdensome to bring a second doctor in, after the abortion doctor has made his assessment: an assessment that has been proved to be flawed.

As if doctors are all the same. As if a second opinion is never called for.

Imagine for a moment, Senator Obama, that your wife or daughter is in a car crash. She's brought into the emergency room with a serious head injury. A doctor examines her, tells you that there is no hope, and hands you papers for organ donation.

This doctor is telling you that your loved one's brain injury is fatal. If that doctor is a neurosurgeon, how much would you trust the assessment? What if the doctor isn't a neurosurgen, but an ob/gyn? Would you want him making that call?

Probably not. He might be the best ob/gyn in the world, but brain surgery is tricky business. You'd want a specialist, somebody with experience assessing patients with brain injuries.

Some areas of medicine are fairly simple, and don't really require a specialist. Probably just about any doctor can set a simple fracture, drain an abscessed toenail, or treat your poison ivy. But for a brain injury, you're rightly going to want a specialist, with intensive specialized training and extensive specialized experience. The same goes with preemies -- especially the micropreemies that can be expected in an abortion-triggered birth. These tiny babies are not easy to assess and care for. They require a very high level of skill and clinical judgment. Only neonatologists are qualified to assess and care for them.

The doctor making the initial assessment in an abortion is likely an ob/gyn, though he might be a psychiatrist or dermatologist or ENT. There's no requirement that abortions be performed by ob/gyns. But let's for the sake of argument assume that he is an ob/gyn.

Ob/gyns who are providing care to women who don't intend to abort routinely concede that assessing and caring for critically ill, premature, or injured babies isn't their speciality. They have sense enough, when the mother loves and wants her baby, to call in an expert to make an expert assessment.

But, Senator Obama, you are asserting that in the case of an infant born during an abortion, the usual standard of care -- to have a neonatologist assess the premature and/or injured baby -- suddenly doesn't apply. In abortion cases, and abortion cases alone, you assert, the ob/gyn's skill is adequate to assess and care for that baby.

But to reiterate, the ob/gyn in question has already shown poor clinical judgment in his own specialty by trying to abort a baby strong enough to survive the procedure.

Perhaps you are not necessarily endorsing infanticide of babies born during abortions. You might not even have thought through the fact that you're stating that a lesser standard of care is adequate. It might simply never have occurred to you that a premature baby needs a neonatologist, not an obstetrician.

It doesn't show murderous intent. But it shows poor judgment and lack of reasoning. And it still leaves babies in the lurch if they're born after an abortion.

Senator Obama, think of how William Waddill strangled Baby W. Think of how Raymond Showery drowned Baby Girl Doe. Think of how Xemina Renearts was stuck in a bedpan and put into a closet. Think of how Rowan was kept locked in a bathroom with his screaming, desperate mother pleading for help.

Can you find a shred of compassion in your heart for these children? Can you find just a shred of doubt that all doctors can always be trusted to risk their medical license, insurance, and reputation for the sake of a baby they've been paid to kill?

Can you break out of your "abortionists are saints who can do no wrong" mindset, just for a moment?

Oz cancels Welcome Wagon for doctor whose son has Down syndrome

Doctor told to get out because of son with Down syndrome

Dr Bernhard Moeller answered a call from the Federal Government and the Horsham community two years ago, and moved from Germany to become the town's only permanent specialist physician.

But the Department of Immigration and Citizenship this week rejected an application from Dr Moeller and his family for permanent residency because his 13-year-old son, Lukas, has Down syndrome and does not fit the bureaucracy's health criteria.

Why am I not surprised? This is the country where doctors think short stature ought to be grounds for late-term abortion.

Oz is all for tolerance and diversity as long as you're a poisonous creature. But a child who's different isn't welcome.

Planned Parenthood admits to live births.

Some folks are insisting that hey, these are after all 22 week babies at the oldest. They can't survive even if they are born alive. Well, I found preemie survival rates here:

  • 22 weeks: 0-10% survival rate
  • 23 weeks: 10-35% survival rate
  • 24 weeks: 40-70% survival rate
  • 25 weeks: 50-80% survival rate
  • 26 weeks: 80-90% survival rate
  • 27 weeks: greater than 90% survival rate

This page addresses errors in estimating gestational age: "The accuracy of ultrasound in predicting gestational age gets worse as the pregnancy advances. By 20 weeks, ultrasound is accurate only to within plus or minus two weeks, and by the third trimester, its accuracy falls to plus or minus 3 weeks."

Ultrasound is the most common method of estimating gestational age in abortion practice. Many women are going in for late abortions because they'd lost track of their cycles and weren't sure they were pregnant at all, so the LNMP method of dating is lost with these women. The doctors are having to rely almost entirely on ultrasound.

Here are some cases of abortion doctors miscalculating gestation age: a supposedly 21-week baby who turned out to be 30 weeks, a supposedly 11-week baby that turned out to be 27 weeks, a baby that was believed to be about 12 weeks and turned out to be 28 weeks, and a supposedly 6-week baby that turned out to be 26 weeks. I'll recognize, however, that these are unusual screw-ups. I'll just focus on being within the margin of error for a doctor who is taking reasonable care.

With the range of error of properly performed ultrasounds, a "22 week" baby with an estimated 10% or less chance of survival may just as readily be a 20 week baby with no chance of survival, or a 24 week baby with a 40-70% chance of survival.

And remember, also, that this particular facility has a 22-week cut off. Other facilities openly advertise elective abortions to 26 weeks -- babies that have an 80-90% chance of survival, and who may actually be three weeks older than estimated. They might be as old as 29 weeks, with a greater than 90% chance of survival.

Of course, of you wrap them in a towel and stick them in a closet, they have a 0% chance of survival.

Lydia's abortion was typical of criminal abortions in that it was performed by a physician.

When the Government Gives Permission to Kill

Today is an anniversary few people outside the LDS church are aware of.

On October 27, 1838, Governor Lilburn W. Boggs of Missouri issued an Extermination Order, declaring that "the Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the State if necessary for the public peace...." Most Missouri citizens backed the order (although some did question or denounce it). The Mormons were, in the simplest of terms, "unwanted."

On October 30, with the Extermination Order as justification, a band of the Missouri Militia launched an attack on a small Mormon settlement at Haun's Mill, killing 17 Mormons, including a 10-year-old boy who was shot in the head as he cowered under the bellows of the blacksmith shop, and a 78-year-old man who was shot after he had surrendered his musket.

For a rare and recently unearthed first-person account, see The Reminiscence of Willard Gilbert Smith.

Several years ago, I spoke with a Latter-Day Saints historian, who told me that survivors of the Massacre sued the state of Missouri over the deaths of their loved ones, taking their case all the way to the Supreme Court. The Court, he said, backed the state on the grounds that the killings were perfectly legal.

Meanwhile, the Extermination Order remained on the books in Missouri until recinded by executive order of Governor Christopher S. Bond on June 25, 1976. So until 1976, it was perfectly legal to kill a Mormon in Missouri. Did that make it right?

According to the prochoicers who argue that since abortion is legal, it's also moral, the answer must be yes.

    Abortion Deaths in the 1990s

The Centers for Disease Control deigned to count the following abortion deaths in their most recent Abortion Surveillance Summary, for 2004:

Today I'll look at deaths in the 1990s.

  • 1990: They count 9 legals and no illegals. I have 6 -- 5 legals and 1 illegal: Mary Ann Dancy, Christina Goesswein, Sophie McCoy, Sandra Milton, "Daisy" Roe (illegal), and Angela Satterfield. I know they didn't count Angela, because in the 1970s they shifted deaths that happened because the abortionist let her die from an undiagnosed ectopic into the generic ectopic pregnancy category, effectively hiding these deaths even though National Abortion Federation members agree that it's totally inexcusable for an abortion doctor to fail to diagnose an ectopic. So, I have an illegal and an ectopic that the CDC missed, which means they have at least 5 legal abortion deaths I don't know about.

  • 1991: They count 11 legal and 1 illegal. I have 9: Colleen Chambers, Edith Cote, Anjelica Duarte, Angela Hall, Shirley Hollis (who they probably don't count, since she died of an undiagnosed heart ailment that went untreated because she thought she was just having side effects from the abortion), Dawn Mack, Terri Roe, Latachie Veal (who we know they didn't count), and Ingar Weber. So there are at least three legal abortion deaths the CDC knows about that I don't. The illegal abortion death might be a case like "Daisy" Roe, where the woman knew full well she was doing something illegal and dangerous, or it might be a case like Myrta Baptiste, who thought her abortion was legal, and didn't realize that her doctor had a suspended license when he did her abortion.

  • 1992: They count 10. I have 10 as well: Diane Adams (who they likely don't count -- she died in the US Virgin Islands, an area US public health officials tend to ignore, and her abortionist was charged with manslaughter in her death which means he might have been operating without a license, in which case the CDC would have counted Diane's death as an illegal abortion death), Deanna Bell, Arlin della Cruz, Susan Levy, Suzanne Logan (who they likely didn't count because of the time that elapsed between her fatal injury and her death), Kelly Morse, DaNette Pergusson, "Melissa" Roe, "Susan" Roe (who Life Dynamics verified the CDC did count), and Rhonda Rollinson. So it's possible, but impossible to confirm, that the CDC had two deaths I haven't counted, if they didn't count Diane Adams and Suzanne Logan.

  • 1993: They count 9 - 6 legal, 1 illegal, and 2 undetermined. I have 6: Andrea Corey, Jane Doe, aka "Tracy", Giseline Lafontant, Kathy McKnight, Guadalupe Negron, and Angela Sanchez, who if the CDC counted would be an illegal abortion death because her abortionist was an untrained clinic owner -- something Angela had no way of knowing. So they have at least one legal abortion death that I don't know of. I'd probably also count their two "undetermined" as legal abortion deaths as well, since my criteria is that the woman had to have believed her abortion to be legal, whereas they have to determine if the abortionist was a licensed physician in order to tally it as legal or illegal.

  • 1994: They count 10 legal and 2 illegal. I have 8: Pamela Colson, Alerte Desanges, Jammie Garcia, Kris Humphrey (illegal - she was doing a "safe and natural" herbal abortion), Christine Mora, Sarah Niebel, Magdalena Rodriguez, and Ingrid Thomas. So they have at least three legal abortion deaths I don't know about, as well as at least one they classify as illegal.

  • 1995: They count 4. I have 2: Lisa Bardsley and Linda Boom. So they have at least two that I don't know about.

  • 1996: They count 9. I have 4: Carolina Gutierrez, Sharon Hamplton, Chivon Williams, and Tanya Williamson. So they have at least five legal abortion deaths I don't know about.

  • 1997: They count 7. I have 4: Maureen Espinoza, Jennifer H., Gracealynn "Tammy" Harris, and Nichole Williams. So they have at least three that I don't know about. (Updated 12/27/08)

  • 1998: They count 10. I have 5: Tamika Dowdy, Lou Anne Herron, Kendra McLeod, Venus Ortiz (who they almost certainly don't count because of the time elapsed between her fatal injury and her death), and Virginia Wolfe. That means there are at least 5, probably at least 6, that they're counting that I don't know about.

  • 1999: They count 4. I have 2: Shelby Moran (who they almost certainly don't count because of the length of time between the injury and her death) and "Yvonne" Roe. So they have at least 2, probably at least 3, deaths I don't know about.

The CDC thus left me eating their dust in the 1990s; however, much of my information hinged on the extensive study done by Kevin Sherlock in the 1980s. Without his contributions, you can see the difference in how thorough my own data are.

Roundup: A new embryology theory, Obama and "prevention", and knowing a little too little

The Planned Parenthood in Stockton, California, evidently subscribes to the agricultural theory of embryology. It's not a baby, it's a rice cake!

An analysis of Barack Obama's promise to Planned Parenthood (that the first thing he'd do as POTUS is sign the "Freedom of Choice Act") notes that this one stroke of the pen would likely raise abortion rates in America 20%. Explain, please, how this constitutes "prevention".

Some people know just enough to be dangerous. Womensgrid laments how "murky" the law is in Northern Ireland regarding abortion. Alas, she laments, women suffer because they can't just go rid themselves of their fetuses when they're distressed about being pregnant. What she doesn't realize is that Dr. Alec Bourne, whose case she cites, wasn't as enamored as she is of on-demand abortion. In fact, Bourne later wrote, "Those who plead for an extensive relaxation of the law [against abortion] have no idea of the very many cases where a woman who, during the first three months, makes a most impassioned appeal for her pregnancy to be 'finished,' later, when the baby is born, is thankful indeed that it was not killed while still an embryo. During my long years in practice I have had many a letter of the deepest gratitude for refusing to accede to an early appeal." (A. Bourne, A Doctor's Creed: The Memoirs of a Gynecologist, London, 1963) Pray for the rest of poor Dr. Bourne's soul. He must be tormented at the thought of what he unwittingly helped to unleash. He never wanted abortion on demand, but that's what his ill-thought-out attempt at compassion ended up producing. (And, of course, as is so often the case in blogs like womensgrid, comments are closed; it's not a good idea to open your mind too far, is it? You might realize the world isn't the way you think it is.)

1993: Safe, legal abortion turns fatal for New York woman

On October 28, 1993, 25-year-old Giselene Lafontant lost her fight for life. She had been on a respirator since October 9, when she'd been taken to Good Samaritan Hospital after going into cardio-respiratory arrest less than 20 minutes after her safe, legal abortion. She had been 9 or 10 weeks pregnant. The abortion had been performed by Dr. Scher at Gynecare in Monsey, New York.

1947: Abortion kills baby, heiress, doctor

At 11 AM on October 17, 1947, Dr. Paul Singer, a gynecologist, called police and reported that a woman had come to his office suffering from an incomplete abortion. He said that he had taken 22-year-old Jane Ward, heir to the Drake Bakeries fortune, to Park East Hospital, where Dr. Oswald Glasberg, a plastic surgeon, had helped him to complete the abortion.

Jane died on October 28, and the autopsy confirmed the cause of death as criminal abortion.

After the death, Singer and Glasberg were arrested and released on bail. The baby's father, Eduardo Schneidewind, a trade promotion executive for a South American government, was questioned as a material witness but was never indicted.

Dr. Alejandro Ovalle, an X-ray technician, was sentenced to one year after pleading guilty as an accessory, having profited from abortion referrals.

Singer was convicted of manslaughter in Jane's death, and sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison. The judge, Francis L. Valente, said that Jane had been subjected to "surgical mayhem," and that Singer and Glassberg were "completely devoid of human feeling and decency." Glassberg was also convicted and sentenced to prison, but was never sentenced because six hours after the verdict on June 14, 1948, he committed suicide in his cell, having poisoned himself.

Singer appealed his conviction, which was upheld.

Jane Ward's tragic death underscores points we would do well to remember:

  • If illegal abortion was a privilege of the wealthy, so was illegal abortion death.
  • Most illegal abortions were performed by doctors, not by amateurs.
  • Having a doctor do your abortion doesn't mean you'll survive it.
  • In illegal abortions, the abortionist and his accomplices faced some risks themselves; the woman wasn't the only person facing risks.

Gianna Jessen takes Obama to the woodshed again

Let's look again at what his attitude means in actual practice:

    Abortion deaths since 2000

The most recent CDC Abortion Surveillance Summary is for 2004. Not that they're dragging their asses or anything.

The most recent deaths they tally are for 2003. Since then I have found:

  • 2007: Edrica Goode and Laura Hope Smith

  • 2006: Laura Grunas

  • 2005: Christin Gilbert and Oriane Shevin

  • 2004: Chanelle Bryant and Tamiia Russell

Now we can look at where the CDC deigns to count:

    Let's compare:

  • 2003: They count 10. I have 3: Leigh Ann Alford, Holly Patterson, and Vivian Tran. That means there are at least 7 deaths I don't know about.

  • 2002: They count 9. I have Diana Lopez, "Adelle Roe", Brenda Vise, and Stacy Zallie. That means there are at least 5 deaths I don't know about.

  • 2001: They count 6 legal and 1 illegal. I have "Haley Mason". That means there are at least 5 legal abortion deaths I don't know about. Plus there's an illegal death which, since it's not been shouted from the rooftops by abortion advocacy groups, is probably one like Myrta Baptiste, who thought her abortion was legal, and didn't realize that her doctor had a suspended license when he did her abortion.

  • 2000: They count 11. I have L'Echelle Head, Kimberly Neil, and Nicey Washington. That means there are at least 8 more deaths I don't know about.

Lest you think that the CDC has all mine, plus some, remember that we know they didn't count Latachie Veal.

For 1981, I found 10 - Barbara Auerbach, Diane Boyd, Sheryl Cottone, Barbara Dillon, Norma Greene, Barbara Lerner, Maura Morales, "Isabel Roe", Sharonda Rowe, and Robin Wells - while they counted only 8.

    For 1985, they counted 11, and I found 12.

    For 1986, they counted 11, and I found 16.

    For 1987, they counted 7, and I found 11.

    For 1989, they counted 12, and I found 14.

So there's some overlap, but just because I discovered a woman's abortion death doesn't mean the CDC counted her.

Now, I do have three RU-486 deaths that the CDC has probably counted, but that I can't pin to a specific year because I don't have enough information. Still, we know that the CDC knows of at least 22 abortion deaths from 2000-2003 that I don't know about.

Obama: U.S. Should Also Spread the 'Choice' Around

(2008-10-27) — In addition to spreading the wealth around, Democrat presidential nominee Barack Obama today said the unfair distribution of a woman’s right to choose is part of “the unfinished business of the civil rights movement.”

“Although every woman has the theoretical right to choose an abortion, thanks to the Supreme Court’s discovery of the Constitution’s implied right to privacy,” said Sen. Obama, “only a small percentage of women actually get abortions. This means that the vast majority of women are missing out on the benefits of exercising their Constitutional right. 1972: Teen dies from abortion at Family Planning Associates facility

Sixteen-year-old Natalie Meyers was pronouced dead at 9:35AM on October 27, 1972, at County-USC Medical Center. She had been transferred there from San Vicente abortion hospital in Los Angeles on October 22.

Her mother has brought her to San Vincente Hospital for a safe and legal abortion on October 21. Milton Gotlib had injected saline into Natalie's uterus that day. The strong salt solution was intended to kill Natalie's unborn baby and cause labor.

At first, everything went as intended. On October 22, Natalie expelled the dead baby. But there were immediate signs of trouble. She retained the placenta, had trouble breathing, and suffered abdominal pain, so San Vicente staff transferred Natalie to County-USC Medical Center just before midnight.

Natalie was in shock when she arrived at County-USC. She underwent a D&C there, but remained in shock from infection in her uterus. On October 26, a hysterectomy was performed to try to control the infection, to no avail.

The autopsy found most of Natalie's internal organs swollen and hemorrhagic. Death was attributed to hyaline membrane disease brought on by the abortion.

Natalie is one of many young mothers to die at one of Edward Allred's facilities. Others known to have died after abortion at Allred's facilities include:

Despite these deaths, and the fact that Allred has admitted in a deposition that he's never done any sort of review of procedures to prevent further deaths, his Family Planning Associates facilities were welcomed into, and remain part of, the National Abortion Federation.

    Searches: failed abortion

  • Failed abortion. There are two different kinds: 1) failed early abortions, which fail to kill the fetus, who continues to gestate, and 2) failed late abortions, which are called "babies".

Let's look at failed early abortions first:

This study found that 46 babies survived the 65,045 abortions performed. That's about one in every 1,400 abortions. With 1.2 million abortions done every year in the US, that's about 849 babies every year that survive a first-trimester abortion attempt.

The Washington State Department of Health noted that reported failed abortions are at .1%, which if extrapolated for the entire US would be roughly 1,200 babies surving first-trimester abortion attempts annually.

A study at a Planned Parenthood 17 babies survived out of 1,155 they attempted to kill by abortion -- a 1.5% failed abortion rate. Extrapolated to the entire US, this would mean roughly 18,000 babies surviving first trimester abortions.

This site cites a Planned Parenthood study. The failure rate for chemical abortion raged from 1% to 9%, and suction abortions had a failure rate of .2%.

I'm guessing that different facilities have different rates of failed abortion, just as they have different rates of other complications. But clealry, somewhere between aout 850 and 1,800 babies are surviving first-trimester attepts to kill them.

I've not been able to find any studies on what percent of mothers have somebody finish the kid off, and what percent let the child continue to gestate unmolested. But odds are pretty solid that about 1,000 American women every year get a second chance at motherhood after making an initial choice of death for their child. The fact that many of them do choose life after having initially choosing abortion casts some doubt over claims that abortion is so "necessary". After all, if having that baby would utterly ruin her life, it will still utterly ruin her life even if it's gestated a couple of extra weeks. If the fact that the baby is a bit bigger and older is enough to change the woman's mind, she never had that compelling a reason in the first place, did she?

    What of failed late abortions?

I blogged some examples in More Born-Alive Babies, More Born Alive Babies and Their Fates, Obama, Babies, and the Benefit of the Doubt, and Obama and the Born Alive Babies. The last count of how many of such babies are born alive in the US was by the Centers for Disease Control, who said there were 400 - 500 reported every year but no doubt many more going unreported. As CDC spokesman Willard Cates said, "It's like turning yourself in to the IRS for an audit" to report a live birth after an abortion. And nobody keeps statistics on how many of these babies die of prematurity or from their injuries, how many are allowed to die of neglect, how many are murdered, and how many survive.

Why do we have no data? Because nobody with the power to collect the information actually cares. They don't even care enough about maternal survival to keep accurate statistics. How much less do they care about babies that survive?

Jessica replied, "No, I don't support him. Your guy is a socialist who voted four times in the state Senate to let little babies die in hospital closets; I think you should find something better to do with your time." Then Jessica hung up.

The next day, a man and a woman in suits showed up at the door of her home, identifying themselves as members of the Secret Service.

The Secret Service agents stated that the Obama campaign had complained of a death threat. They had quoted Jessica as saying, "I will never support Obama, and he will wind up dead on a hospital floor."

Jessica's husband had heard Jessica's side of the original phone call and verified the actual quote. To which the female agent replied, "Oh? Well why would she (the Obama volunteer) make that up?"

Jessica replied that the Obama volunteer was probably unhappy about what Jessica had said about her candidate. The female agent then said "That's right, you were rude!"

The male agent then displayed a file with Jessica's full name prominently printed on it and asked her how she felt about Obama. At this point, the former Marine told the agent "in no uncertain terms" (as she later recounted) that this was America and that the last time she checked, she was allowed to think whatever she wanted without being questioned by the Secret Service. And was being "rude" a federal crime now too?

The agents then admitted they had no tape of the conversation, just the quote from the Obama campaign.

Responding to Jessica's questions, the agents would not identify themselves by name, nor reveal the name of the Obama volunteer who had made the complaint. The agents did indicate that Jessica was not in a court of law yet, and that they were trying to not embarrass her "by going to all her family and neighbors."

To these implied threats, Jessica invited the agents to speak to whomever they wanted, and stated she would happily go to court since she had done nothing wrong.

Jessica asked the agents, "Look, someone calls me unsolicited on my cell phone to ask me to support their candidate, and I can't tell them why I don't?"

The Secret Service left Jessica that day, but she could not get the "visit" out of her mind.

Jessica wrote later, "The fact that the volunteer lied, the fact that the Secret Service came to my house to question me about my thoughts and feelings and threaten to embarrass me to my neighbors and go to court if I didn't cooperate is not the tragedy here.

"Because that girl on the phone doesn't have the pull to send the Secret Service to my home. Someone high in the ranks of a campaign working for a man who may be the next President of the United States of America felt comfortable bringing the force of the Federal Government to bear on a private citizen on nothing but the word of a partisan volunteer."

    Obama, Abortion, and Tragedy

    LoveHateOprah has some pithy words:

    Barack Obama said, "... nobody's pro-abortion. I think it's always a tragic situation."

    Really? Come on. Really?

You think it is always a tragic situation. And yet when over 1.2 million times a year, a young woman lies down and this tragedy unfolds -- we're all just supposed to stand by and say, "Well, it's your body and your decision."

Planned Parenthood says that 70% of these women don't even want this lamentable event to occur, but feel they have no other choice. So over 840,000 women in this country every year goes through this deplorable procedure out of desperation and yet Obama stands by and says "Well, it's your body and your decision."

So if a young woman was making another tragic decision -- .... "I just can't handle my life right now -- I'm going to commit suicide." Would it be appropriate to respond with "Well, it's your body and your decision."

    Read the whole thing.

    To the Sign Vandal

    Dear Sign Vandal:

I came out of my house this morning to find that you'd tried to totally yank my McCain/Palin sign out, probably to trash it. But it was wedged too firmly, so you settled for crumpling it.

What did you hope to accomplish?

Did you think that vandalism would convince me that it's okay to stick disabled babies in a closet and leave them to die?

Did you think that vandalism would convince me that it's okay to try to register dead people to vote?

Did you think that vandalism would convince me that people who work hard aren't entitled to keep what they own?

Did you think that vandalism would convince me that it's okay to try to crush free speech?

All you did was add yet another piece of evidence that opponents of McCain and Palin are lawless, amoral people who have no tolerance for anybody who isn't marching in lock step with The One and his Socialist, freedom-crushing agenda.

Thanks for making my point for me.

1929: Chicago back-alley abortion proves fatal

On October 26, 1929, 33-year-old Agnes Johnson died from the effects of a criminal abortion performed October 12 at the Chicago office of Dr. Joseph Stern. Stern was arrested the day Agnes died. On November 1, he was indicted for felony murder by a grand jury. Agnes's abortion was typical of illegal abortions in that it was performed by a physician.

Jeri Thompson, wife of former GOP presidential aspirant Fred Thompson, took Alan Colmes' head neatly off and handed it to him on a plate, on the October 23 broadcast. Jeri heads up Team Sarah, a campaign effort for the McCain/Palin ticket. She totally nailed the liberal co-host of "Hannity & Colmes" on the matter of the media's hyping the non-scandal of the RNC's wardrobe expenses for the Alaska governor.

    Were the Vikings really fops?

Some researchers, evidently concerned about the self-esteem of British schoolchildren who might have Viking ancestry, are trying to make the Vikings out to be proto-dandies, the metrosexuals of the Dark Ages.

The Vikings are traditionally known for leaving destruction in their wake as they travelled around Europe raping, pillaging and plundering.

But Cambridge University has launched a campaign to recast them as "new men" with an interest in grooming, fashion and poetry.

Great. Just what we need. Vikings as addlepated as hippies, but better groomed.

They did not, in fact, wear horned or winged helmets. And they appear to have been a vain race who were concerned about their appearance.

"It seems that the Vikings may not have been as hairy and dirty as is commonly imagined," the guide say.

Okay, I can deal with the lack of horns and wings on the helmets. But what's the point of being a Viking if you can't be hairy and dirty?

"A medieval chronicler, John of Wallingford, talking about the eleventh century, complained that the Danes were too clean - they combed their hair every day, washed every Saturday, and changed their clothes regularly."

Okay, clean is relative. They were still properly dirty by modern standards. (Well, maybe not by European standards.) Does this mean they weren't hairy?

The guide reveals that Norsemen were also stylish trend-setters: "Contemporaries who met individual Vikings were struck by the extreme bagginess of their trousers."

Great. Gangsta pants, hippy-dippy poetry. The worst of both worlds.

Dr Elizabeth Rowe, a Viking expert and lecturer in Scandinavian mediaeval history at the university, said it was important that children should not picture the Norse warriors as an aggressive race, preoccupied with raping and looting.

"Many British children are quite likely to have Viking ancestry and we want to make them think about the reality of their past," she said.

Great. Just what Nanny state kids need: to be reassured that their Viking ancestors, who they once could think of as fierce warriors, were actually just as wimpy as pampered British schoolkids.

"It's damaging to think that they were simply a violent society, and easy to undermine them as a people who have no redeeming qualities."

No redeeming qualities?!?! Vikings had magnificent longboats tough enough to brave the fiercest storms, but deft enough to sail on the morning dew. They had magnificent swords, shields, and jewelry. And they were the first Europeans to reach North America. But in order to have "redeeming qualities" they'd have to be mincing, flower-picking shepherd-poets? Guess what, Dr. Rowe -- Not everybody wants to descend from Alan Alda or Leonard Nemoy.

Report your findings of settlements and such, but don't do a Viking Extreme Makeover. Some of us are proud of our hairy, dirty, seafaring ancestors and don't need the image of them acting like San Francisco beatnicks, okay? Least of all over-coddled British schoolkids who need to be toughened up a bit. Let them have at least the illusion of warrior blood in their veins.

What Palin should have said about abortion clinic bombers

Abortion clinic bombers not terrorists, Palin says

When asked Thursday night by NBC television presenter Brian Williams whether an abortion clinic bomber was a terrorist, Palin heaved a sigh and, at first, circumvented the question.

"There's no question that Bill Ayers by his own admittance was one who sought to destroy our US Capitol and our Pentagon. That is a domestic terrorist," Palin said, referring to a 1960s leftist who founded a radical violent gang dubbed the "Weathermen" -- and who years later supported Obama's first run for public office in the state of Illinois.

"Now, others who would want to engage in harming innocent Americans or facilities that it would be unacceptable to... I don't know if you're gonna use the word 'terrorist' there," the ardently pro-life running mate of John McCain said.

That was lame and pathetic, Governor Palin. Here's what you should have said:

Yes. Absolutely. And thank God that proper actions by law enforcement, and uniform condemnation by legitimate prolife people and organizations, have put a stop to that sort of appalling behavior in this country.

    Short and sweet.

    Your Art Style Test

Your result for What Your Taste in Art Says About You Test...

    Extroverted, Progressive, and Intelligent

Cubism was a 20th century avant-garde movement, pioneered by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. It revolutionized European art and inspired changes in music and literature. The first branch of cubism, known as Analytic Cubism. It was both radical and influential as a short but highly significant art movement between 1908 and 1911 mainly in France. In its second phase, Synthetic Cubism, (using synthetic materials in the art) the movement spread and remained vital until around 1919.

People that chose Cubist paintings as their favorite art form tend to be very individualized people. They are more extroverted and less afraid of speaking their opinions then other people. They tend to be progressive and are very forward thinking. As the cubist painting is like looking into a shattered mirror where you can see different angles of the images, the people that prefer these paintings like looking at all angles of a problem. These people are intelligent and they are the transformers of our generation. They look beyond what is seen into what things could become. They are ready to leave the ideas of the past behind and look at what the future has to offer.

1979: National Abortion Federation care provides lingering death for two teens

On October 24, 1979, 15-year-old Deloris Smith died in a nursing home near Atlanta. She had been transferred there from Grady Memorial Hospital, where she had been in a coma since June 2.

That was when National Abortion Federation member Atlanta Women's Pavilion had risen to new levels of incompetence when staff there managed to fatally injure two teenage abortion patients in less than an hour.

It all began when 19-year-old Angela Scott stopped breathing in the recovery room. A nurse-anesthetist was administering anesthesia to Deloris, then 14, while Dr. Jacob Adams was performing her safe, legal abortion. The nurse-anesthetist ran to assist in efforts to revive Angela, leaving Delores unattended with her anesthesia drip still running.

After staff had resuscitated Angela and loaded her into an ambulance, they returned their attention to Deloris, who had gone into cardio-respiratory arrest. Adams had accompanied Angela to Grady Memorial Hospital, and AWP staff refused to release Deloris to an ambulance until the physician had returned to discharge her. This resulted in a 30-minute delay, during which the ambulance crew was unable to attend to Deloris, much less transport her.

Angela lingered for a week in a coma before dying on June 11. Delores never regained consciousness and eventually was admitted to a nursing home, where she died of adult respiratory distress syndrome on October 24. Her mother filed suit against Atlanta Women's Pavilion, noting among other things that the pregnancy test they'd performed for Deloris prior to the abortion had come up negative.

    Roundup

Australia paying "baby bonus" of $5,000 -- for aborted late-term babies!

In the wake of some pretty apparent fraud in California, American Life League is calling on concerned citizens to ask their Attorneys General to see if Planned Parenthood is pulling similar shenanigans in their states.

The Euthanasia Prevention Coalition is noting that the standard of care for patients with suicidal ideation is turned on its head for certain patients by proponents of an assisted-suicide bill.

The Silent Solidarity for Life campaign is reporting 32 women and girls who rejected abortions as a result of the protest. Granted, that's just under 1% of a day's worth of abortions, but for every one of these mothers and their babies, it's 100%.

William Ayers only regrets that he didn't do more -- presumably of what he and his Weather Underground friends had in mind:

1913: Fatal abortion, midwife signs confession

Emily Nohavec of St. Louis, age 19, was unmarried and had been living with her sister in St. Louis. She worked as a clerk in her sister‘s vegetable store. On October 18, 1913, she first reported feeling ill. On Monday, October 20, a Dr. Reber was summoned to see her. He diagnosed her with septic peritonitis. The next day, her condition was critical and she was admitted to Rebekah Hospital. There, Dr. Garcia was called in for consultation. Drs. Reber and Garcia agreed that an immediate exploratory surgery was needed to try to save Emily‘s life.

The doctors found Emily‘s abdominal cavity inflamed. A cyst about the size of a pear surrounded her left ovary, her right ovary was surrounded by pus, and there was pus in her fallopian tubes. The doctors removed these purulent organs and inserted drainage tubes.

Dr. Reber also curetted Emily‘s uterus and packed it with iodoform gauze. Emily‘s uterus noted an ulceration about the size of a hazelnut inside the cervix. The edges of this ulceration were ragged and torn, and Reber concluded that this was caused by instrumentation. Reber also believed that swelling near where the fallopian tube entered the uterus was caused by instrumentation. Reber believed that an abortion had been performed a week to ten days before he was first called to examine Emily.

Dr. Garcia, on the other hand, agreed that Emily had recently been pregnant, and that the pregnancy had ended at about two months, but noted "there were no direct punctures or cuts, scratches, or anything of that kind in the uterus, or in the abdomen." He agreed with Dr. Reber that the sepsis was caused by an abortion, but he disagreed about the abortion having been induced. Dr. Garcia concluded that Emily might merely have miscarried.

Despite the efforts of both doctors, Emily died the following day, October 23.

That same day, Dr. Hockdoerfer performed an autopsy. He made the same findings as Drs. Garcia and Reber, except that he also found a section of placental implantation about the size of a quarter. He agreed that retained placental tissue had caused the sepsis, but did not find any signs of damage from instruments. Emily had been in good health prior to her final, fatal illness.

While Emily was hospitalized, police officer William H. Coates arrested a 59-year-old midwife named Emma Bickel, and brought her to Emily‘s bedside. Bickel had been a midwife for 28 years, and reportedly had a reputation for "uprightness" and honesty. Coates testified that he asked Bickel if she knew the girl, and Bickel said yes, she did know her. Coates testified that he then said, ";You performed an abortion on her, didn‘t you?" To which, he testified, Bickel replied, "Yes."; Coates took Bickel to the police station where she made a statement. Coates wrote out the statement as follows:

Department of Police, City of St. Louis.
    7:16 P. M., Oct. 22, 1913.
To whom it may concern I herein state that on or about October 13th, 1913, Emily Nohavec came to my house in the evening and said she was in trouble and wanted me to help her out. I told her it was dangerous for to do a thing like that, and she said, ‘You need not be afraid,‘ that ‘I won't tell on you.‘ I then inserted a catheter into the private parts and opened her womb. She then paid me about five or seven dollars; I don‘t remember which. She came back in two days, and I again put the catheter into the womb. She left, and I never saw her until I saw her this evening at the hospital.
The above statement was made of my own free will, and not by any threats or promises or violence to me.
    [Signed] Emma Bickel.
    Witnesses: Off. W. H. Coates; Off. David J. O‘Connor.

When called upon to testify in court, however, Bickel denied having performed an abortion on Emily. She said that she never knew Emily until the girl came to her house, saying that she was "in trouble." Bickel said that she asked Emily, "How far along?" To which Emily replied that her period was two weeks late. Bickel said that Emily told her that she was married, and that she had taken some medicine to cause an abortion, and had also taken a box of pills. Bickel said that she told Emily, "Well, if you are only two weeks gone they ought to bring you by your next monthlies." Bickel said that she then sent Emily away.

Bickel said that about two weeks later Emily, who had still not given her name, returned, saying that she was ill, and willing to pay $7 for an examination. Bickel said that she used a speculum to examine Emily, and found her cervix open and exuding a foul discharge. Bickel testified that she told Emily to consult a doctor. She said that this took place about two weeks prior to Emily‘s death, and that she‘d not seen the girl between the examination and being brought to the hospital by Officer Coates.

Bickel testified that she had confirmed that she knew Emily, and that the girl had come to her house, but that Coates did not ask her at the hospital if she had performed an abortion. She said that she was taken to the police station, that Coates had written out the statement and told her to sign it, so she‘d complied.

Bickel said that she‘d never told Coates that she‘d inserted a catheter, that she‘d tried to discourage abortion, telling Emily "that it was a dangerous thing to do a thing like that." She said that she‘d only signed the statement because she was excited and confused and was merely doing what she was told.

Despite her protestations of innocence, Bickel was convicted. She was sentenced to three years in prison. She unsuccessfully appealed her conviction.

    Search: Planned Parenthood Abortion Deaths

Planned Parenthood is perhaps the organization most revered by those who support legal abortion. The following women trusted Planned Parenthood to make good on promises of safety and high standards of care, and paid with their lives.

Also keep in mind that this is not a comprehensive list of women who've died after abortions at Planned Parenthood facilities. These are just the deaths that I, personally, was able to identify from public record documents. Unless somebody first does a search of court records or other records and publicizes the death, I can not learn of it.

  • Edrica Goode: This 21-year-old aspiring lawyer went to a Planned Parenthood in Riverside, California, on January 31, 2007, for a second-trimester abortion. Despite clear signs of infection, a nurse practitioner inserted laminaria and sent her home.

  • Diana Lopez: Diana Lopez, age 25, was 19 weeks pregnant when she went to a Planned Parenthood for an abortion on February 28, 2002. Before the day was over, Diana had bled to death.

  • Holly Patterson: Holly Patterson, age 18, died September 17, 2003, from sepsis caused by a fetus incompletely expelled in a chemical abortion. Holly got the drugs for the fatal abortion at a Planned Parenthood in Hayward, California, on September 10.

  • Vivian Tran: Vivian was 22 years old, and died December 29, 2003, six days into the abortion process. She'd been given abortion drugs on December 23 at the Costa Mesa Planned Parenthood facility.

  • Nichole Williams: Twenty-two-year-old Nicole was the third patient known to have died of abortion complications under the dubious care of Dr. Robert Crist. The others were Latachie Veal and Diane Boyd. Nichole submitted to an abortion at a National Abortion Federation member facility operated by Planned Parenthood.

The following patients were referred by Planned Parenthood for the abortions that took their lives. So though it was not Planned Parenthood staff that took instrument in hand and killed them, their deaths are still due to having trusted Planned Parenthood.

  • Andrea Corey: Andrea Corey was 31 years old when she was referred by nearby Planned Parenthood to Southern Tier Women's Services in New York for an abortion.

  • Sandra Kaiser: In October of 1984, 14-year-old Sandra Kaiser was referred by Planned Parenthood to Reproductive Health Services (RHS) for an abortion, to be done behind her mother's back in violation of parental involvement laws. Afterward, Sandra's mental health deteriorated and she threw herself into traffic.

For more abortion deaths, visit the Cemetery of Choice:

  • 1981: Disabled teen one of three to die under care of Crist

Nineteen-year-old Diane Boyd lived in a state institution for the mentally disabled. There, she was beaten and raped in July of 1981, and was later discovered to be pregnant. A safe, legal abortion was arranged for Diane at National Abortion Federation member Reproductive Health Services in St. Louis, and Diane's mother signed a consent form. The abortion was performed October 22, 1981. Diane died the next day.

According to suits later filed by Diane's mother, RHS staff and abortionist Robert Crist did not check for possible drug interactions before giving Diane valium and sublimaze. These drugs evidently reacted with Diane's usual medication, thorazine, causing her to stop breathing. Diane's mother said that the clinic lacked heart monitoring equipment or resuscitation equipment.

Diane was not the last woman to die after abortion by Crist. Seventeen-year-old Latatchie Veal bled to death after an abortion by Crist in 1991. Twenty-two-year-old Nichole Williams died of DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulopathy) after an abortion by Crist in 1997.

As for RHS, they'd performed an abortion on fourteen-year-old Sandra Kaiser in 1984 without her mother's knowledge or consent. Sandra's already fragile mental health deteriorated further, and she committed suicide shortly thereafter by throwing herself into traffic.

1939: Abortion referral by drug clerk proves fatal

At 2 a.m. on October 23, 1939, 26-year-old Katherine DiDonato died at Roosevelt Hospital in New York, leaving two children motherless. She had been admitted on October 16 to be treated for complications of a criminal abortion, which her husband indicated had taken place on October 13.

He told detectives that Katherine had bought some pills from drug clerk Hyman Kantor, hoping they'd cause an abortion. Kantor had recommended Dr. Aloysius Mulholland to perform an abortion.

After Katherine's death, both Mulholland and Kantor were charged with homicide.

Katherine's abortion was typical of pre-Roe abortions in that it was performed by a physician.

    Cry me a river

Anti-Palin crybabies whine that the cops pushed them out of the way.

Compare how these whiners were treated with the manhandling prolife protesters have gotten at the hand of police. (interspersed starting at 2:22 until around 3:35, and YES, they broke that man's arm.) (WARNING: EXTREMELY GRAPHIC SHOTS OF ABORTED BABIES, A LATE DISMEMBERMENT ABORTION BEING PERFORMED, AND OF POLICE BRUTALITY).

When they start molesting you, breaking your arms, threatening to rape you, leaving you without needed medication, and stripping you in front of male inmates, then, Ms. "I Disagree With Palin's Infatuation With Live Babies", you can complain. All these cops were doing was protecting you from the consequences of your own stupidity in taking part in what appeared to be a co-ordinated physical attack of a political candidate's motorcade. In the mean time get your whining ass out of the road. And remember that it was the sacrifice of men like John McCain that gave you the right to protest in the first place.

Between a woman and her lying scumbag of a doctor

Diabetec mother saves life of her child today at abortion clinic:

A mother came with tears in her eyes to the abortion clinic this morning. Fortunately, she was able to speak with our sidewalk councilors. The local "health clinic" had told her she had to have an abortion because she has diabetes.

This woman was fortunate that she ran into somebody who wasn't shiftless or lazy or lying or whatever is wrong with doctors who are pushing women for abortions that they don't want and that aren't medically called for. This woman was fortunate that the prolifers were there. These women each, by some twist of fate, also managed to find their way to an honest doctor who cared about them -- and their babies.

    Other women weren't so fortunate:

Allegra Roseberry was lied to by several doctors, who lied about her baby's health (falsely telling her that her unborn child was "doomed") and about the criteria to get into an experimental cancer treatment program (pregnancy would not disqualify her, as they'd claimed). She and her baby both ended up dead.

Shari Russell wanted to make a birth plan for her baby with anencephaly, but her doctor lied to her and told her that the pregnancy was threatening her life, and that if she didn't abort, she'd be leaving her other child motherless. Shari didn't find out until after it was too late that he'd been lying.

Ashli McCall was left to fend for herself when Hyperemesis Gravidarum was making her vomit constantly; only after her abortion did she learn that treatment had been available that would have saved her baby's life.

But if they'd been surveyed in the waiting room by the Alan Guttmacher Institute, they'd have marked "maternal health problems" as their reason for abortions. The AGI would have counted them as abortions for "maternal health", when they weren't medically indicated at all. And, by the way, that's the only data we have on abortions for "maternal health" -- from AGI surveys of women who mark a check box. They're self-reporting "health" reasons, which could be anything from Ashli's debilitating but treatable HG, or Allegra's cancer, to the woman just told to abort because of diabetes, to women who don't feel comfortable admitting that they're having abortions for social reasons so they check the "health" box. Nobody has, to my knowledge, ever done any sort of research into the "maternal indications" and how many of these women might be spared the anguish of aborting wanted children.

But it's the prolifers somehow who are the monsters for standing between these weeping women and the vultures who make money and political fodder from their needless misery.

Atlanta Surgi-Center is the National Abortion Federation member clinic that put Catherine Pierce in a fatal coma, then refused to let health inspectors in to investigate.

What of the plague of coathanger abortions we can supposedly expect if Roe vs. Wade is overturned? It turns out that in real life, women are smarter than that. In real life, dangerous self-induced abortion attempts are seen in women with mental health issues that can't be treated by abortion.

Then there's the issue of underage pregnancy, most common in girls who are being subjected to sexual abuse. Abusers then use "reproductive health care" to cover up their crimes. "Reproductive health care" that can turn fatal.

While we're on the subject of death from abortion: There's death from hemorrhage. Death from complications of the abortion anesthesia. Death from embolisms. Death from infections. Yes, there's death from abortion. From abortion that is legal and therefore presumably safe.

People were also looking for two specific deaths from abortion: Laura Hope Smith (pictured), who died in 2007 in Massachusetts when her abortionist allowed an untrained receptionist to assist with general anesthesia; and Diane Boyd, a 19-year-old mentally-disabled rape victim who died when a doctor at a National Abortion Federation member clinic in Missouri gave her drugs that interacted fatally with her usual medications.

You just can't make this shit up.

NARAL: Keeping Young Women Available For Dirty Old Men presents a real NARAL political postcard:

Considering the well documented propensity of "reproductive health care facilities" to return young girls to their abusers for more abuse, this juxtaposition is almost as creepy as the ironically apt Planned Parenthood "holiday card" picturing a man with a young child -- released after one of their abortionists pleaded guilty to possession of some especially appalling child pornography.

Put down that drink.... Biden ... and Biden spoof

Okay, here's what Biden said about The One, and the shitstorm we can expect if he's elected.

I'll whet your whistle with this:

Biden: Obama Ready for Armageddon Showdown He Will Provoke

SEATTLE -- Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Joe Biden promised a group of supporters Sunday that running mate Barack Obama "will absolutely 100% trigger a nuclear Armageddon kinda thing" within the first 20 minutes of his presidency, but added that "Barack Obama is looking forward to this apocalyptic opportunity to test his mettle, because he totally aced his LSATs."

    ....

"Make no mistake, it will be coming from all sides. Shpeew shpeew shpeew! buddda buddddaaa! Boossscchhhh," said Biden, pantomiming gun battles and mushroom clouds. "And there, standing in the middle of it will be Barack Obama -- cool, calm, clean, ar-ti-cu-late. And lemme tell ya, this guy smells fabulous. ....

    ....

Biden also warned the audience that the first days of the Obama administration would bring some inevitable disappointments.

.... "There will be a point -- maybe one week, maybe two weeks after the inauguration -- when the opinion polls will look bad. Really horribly bad. Despite our best efforts, a couple of mid-size cities will inevitably be vaporized. People will be complaining. 'Why are you nationalizing the Safeway?' 'When is Omaha going to stop glowing?' 'Why do the Chinese soldiers keep asking for my papers?' When this happens, we will need you to keep supporting us because, trust me, you really won't want to be observed not supporting us."

"But I promise you, if one of these inevitable nuclear attacks is, God forbid, successful, Barack Obama and I will conduct tough and open negotiations with our new overlords," said Biden. ....

A spokesman for the Obama-Biden campaign later clarified the Senator's remarks, and urged reporters "not to take Senator Biden's words out of context."

When asked what context that was, the spokesman explained that "the Senator has massive brain damage."

    A first for PETA!

They did something cute and clever -- a far cry from the usual stupid and gross tactics. They've dubbed fish "sea kittens". (Never mind that not all fish live in the sea. PETA is, after all, not about accuracy in reporting.)

People don't seem to like fish. They're slithery and slimy, and they have eyes on either side of their pointy little heads—which is weird, to say the least. Plus, the small ones nibble at your feet when you're swimming, and the big ones—well, the big ones will bite your face off if Jaws is anything to go by.

Of course, if you look at it another way, what all this really means is that fish need to fire their PR guy—stat. Whoever was in charge of creating a positive image for fish needs to go right back to working on the Britney Spears account and leave our scaly little friends alone. You've done enough damage, buddy. We've got it from here. And we're going to start by retiring the old name for good. When your name can also be used as a verb that means driving a hook through your head, it's time for a serious image makeover. And who could possibly want to put a hook through a sea kitten?

And, PETA, I do like fish. With lemon butter and just a touch of garlic.

    Joe the Plumber Roundup

    Sorry, I couldn't resist.

    First, there's this great t-shirt:

(Though I admit the tour of Cafe Press "Joe the Plumber" items was like a trip through the Looking Glass, full of crap indicating that one's oneness with Joe also translated to oneness with The One. Yeah. Just like being a Ukrainian farmer made you one with Stalin.)

Mark Steyn really tore into it:

Evidently the O-Mighty One was not happy after his encounter with Joe. He's still willing to talk to Ahmadinejad without preconditions. But never again will he talk to Joe the Plumber without preconditions. Outraged at the way the right-wing whackos were talking up Joe the Plumber as if he were an authentic regular Joe, like Joe Biden, the O-Bots of the media swung into action. Vast regiments of investigate reporters were redeployed from the Wasilla Holiday Inn back to the Lower 48.

"We need you down here checking out this Joe the Plumber," editors barked to journalists.

"But I'm this close to wrapping up the Wasilla Town Library banned-book investigation!"

"Forget it! The Atlantic Monthly is claiming Joe the Plumber is Trig's real father. We can't get behind on this. Get to Minneapolis Airport. Joe the Plumber was seen in the bathroom with Sen. Larry Craig."

"Yes, but he was installing a stopcock."

I'll add more later if I find any worth sharing.

    UPDATE:

    While we're on the topic:

Do you think maybe the MSM has a double standard?

Martin Haskell runs an illegal, unlicensed business in Ohio. Do you see the MSM getting their knickers in a twist about this?

And -- shades of "He's not JOE! He's SAM!" -- Haskell's name isn't even Martin. It's WILLIAM Martin MUDD Haskell. Yes, his name is Mudd.

Gosh, why do you think William Mudd the business owner gets a pass by the media, while Sam/Joe the man who dreams of owning a business gets crucified?

William Martin Mudd Haskell is the guy who popularized Partial Birth Abortion. His unlicensed business is an abortion clinic.

He could do anything and the MSM would look the other way.

Why do women die from legal abortions?

    In a word: Quackery.

I'll pull up a few cases as examples.

  • Cassandra Bleavins bled to death after her safe, legal abortion because the quack doing her abortion just tied her cervix off, leaving no external sign of the hemorrhage from internal lacerations.

  • When Gracealynn Harris was too weak to leave the abortion facility under her own power, staff put her in a wheelchair and pushed her out the door instead of finding out what was wrong with her.

  • Myrta Baptiste was kept bleeding in the clinic instead of being transported promptly to a hospital where she could get life-saving care. By the time it occurred to anybody to call 911, she was in critical condition and doctors were unable to save her.

  • Christlla Forte's quack abortionist not only chose a dangerous, antiquated method that had been abandoned in other counties, he did a botch job of it, getting the concentrated salt solution into her bloodstream.

  • The quack who did Linda Padfield's abortion pulled out a three-inch fetal leg, an arm, and a piece each of skull and torso, then sent his patient home with most of her fetus still rotting inside her.

  • Suzanne Logan was knocked out by one doctor, then another one came in to do her abortion, with nobody trained to monitor her during anesthesia.

  • Deloris Smith was left unattended with her anesthesia drip running while staff went to attend to another patient's emergency. They managed to fatally injure both patients.

  • 1971: Back-alley no longer!

Carole Schaner was 37 years old when she traveled from Ohio to Buffalo, New York, for a safe and legal abortion. Dr. Jesse Ketchum performed a vaginal hysterotomy abortion -- cutting the uterus open and taking the baby out whole -- on October 20, 1971. Carole was 14 weeks pregnant.

After the abortion, Carole went into shock, and was taken to a hospital. She was in shock when she arrived. Despite all efforts, Carole died before doctors could even fully asssess the extent of her injuries. She left behind four children.

The autopsy found that Carole's cervix and uterus had been cut open, and an artery outside her uterus had been cut. It also noted sutures that had evidently been put in by Ketchum in an attempt to repair the damage. The sutures, however, completely closed Carole's cervix, allowing her to continue bleeding from the injured uterus and artery.

Carole was the second woman to bleed to death after an outpatient hystertomy abortion performed by Ketchum; Margaret Smith had died just four months earlier.

Another doctor, Milan Vuitch, also had kept his nose clean as a criminal abortionist, then went on to kill two legal abortion patients. Wilma Harris and Georgianna English both died under Vuitch's care. Benjamin Munson, likewise, had a clean record in his criminal abortionist then went on to kill two women in his supposedly safer legal practice -- Linda Padfield and Yvonne Mesteth.

Search: Abortion for the life of the mother

First of all, they're exceedingly rare. As far back as 1960, Planned Parenthood Medical Director Mary Calderone wrote "[M]edically speaking, that is, from the point of view of diseases of the various systems, cardiac, genitourinary, and so on, it is hardly ever necessary today to consider the life of a mother as threatened by a pregnancy." Dr. Alan Guttmacher, another former leader of Planned Parenthood, said in 1967, "Today it is possible for almost any patient to be brought through pregnancy alive, unless she suffers from a fatal illness such as cancer or leukemia, and if so, abortion would be unlikely to prolong, much less save life."

I searched for conditions in which the prescribed treatment is abortion, and I've not been able to find any.

This Spanish study of women with lupus during pregnancy found no maternal deaths, and of the 8 patients who had "therapeutic" abortions, six of them requested the abortions themselves, and two had abortions performed because their treatment medications were presumed to have harmed the fetuses. None of them was aborted as a live-preserving measure for the mother.

The research these doctors in the UK did is worth noting. I'll bold the particularly important parts:

Between 1967 and 1990, only 151 abortions have been carried out to save the mother's life, a figure amounting to 0.004% of all abortions.

In 1992, a group of Ireland's top gynaecologists wrote: "We affirm that there are no medical circumstances justifying direct abortion, that is, no circumstances in which the life of a mother may only be saved by directly terminating the life of her unborn child."

When Dublin's National Maternity Hospital (where 10% of all births in Ireland occurred) investigated the 21 deaths of pregnant women there between 1970-1979, they found that not a single one of those deaths could have been avoided by abortion.

Ireland, a country where the unborn child is constitutionally protected, has the lowest maternal death rate in the world. The UK, where abortion is available practically on demand, has over five times Ireland's maternal death rate.

Developments in medicine mean that the 'abortion to save the mother's life' argument is becoming harder and harder to justify. It is now possible for women with heart defects to carry a baby to term with expert help and life-threatening conditions such as cancer can often be treated without harming the unborn child. Women facing difficult pregnancies have a right to the best available medical support.

Direct abortion is the deliberate killing of an unborn child. Treatment to save the life of the mother that results in the death of the child as an expected but not intended side effect is not a direct abortion, e.g. in the case of an ectopic pregnancy. In this situation, the baby begins to develop in the woman's fallopian tube and has to be removed or the tube will rupture and cause the death of the woman. This involves the unavoidable death of the unborn baby but the aim of the operation is to save the mother not to kill the baby.

Let me reiterate the most important points:

  • Between 1967 and 1990, only 0.004% of abortions performed in the UK were done with the intent of preserving the mother's life. (I've been unable to find comparable statistics in the U.S., where the only data is on self-reported maternal health concerns among aborting women.)

  • Not a single one of the deaths in Dublin National Maternity Hospital between 1970 and 1979 could have been avoided by abortion. (I've been unable to find a comparable study in the U.S.)

  • Ireland, where abortion is illegal, has the lowest maternal death rate in the world. The UK, where abortion is available practically on demand, has over five times Ireland's maternal death rate. (This can be attributed to the increased risk of complications in subsequent pregnancies caused by abortions.)

In fact, the successful treatment of high-risk pregnancy is measured in terms of length of gestation and fetal survival; maternal survival is expected. You start seeing maternal mortality when you look at studies of women who suffer catastrophic injuries during pregnancy. The medical literature on these cases mentions "abortion" (miscarriage) as an undesired effect of these injuries, not as a treatment.

Pro-life physicians note that doctors often recommend abortions for ailing patients because they fear that treatment for the mother might harm the fetus. Aborting the baby to prevent his possible injury or death makes sense from a legal standpoint, for the doctor to avoid a lawsuit, but these abortions are to protect the doctor's malpractice rates, or to avoid the possible birth of a child with a disability, not to preserve the mother's life.

An example is breast cancer. Doctors would give the women a choice between having the baby killed, and delaying chemo until after birth, risking their own lives. But it turns out that there are treatment regimens that can be administered during pregnancy.

Even if the woman had uterine cancer, requiring a hysterectomy, doctors would deliver the baby live first if he or she was viable. If the baby was not yet viable, the hysterectomy would indeed kill him or her, but would not be the same as performing an abortion -- which is a procedure performed with the primary intent of killing the fetus.

Yes, there are sometimes situations in which a mother develops health problems that require the pregnancy to be terminated. My friend had to have three pregnancies terminated in the third trimester due to life-threatening problems. These terminated pregnancies are named Daniel, Becky, and Mary; they were delivered by emergency c-section.

Do these rare, tragic cases mean that we need a "life of the mother" exception in abortion bans? I think not. Let the doctor take whatever measures he thinks necessary to preserve the mother's life, and allow such cases to simply go unprosecuted, as they were before legalization, and just as doctors are not prosecuted in those rare cases where they kill one conjoined twin to allow the other to survive.

See also “What if the Mother’s Life is in Danger?”

And let's stop letting the abortion lobby use what's likely 0.004% of abortions as an excuse for the other 99.996%.

  • Which way to vote?

I'm really digging down and looking at elections other than the Presidential race, and I'm in a bit of a quandary. In several races, I have a pair of prolife candidates to choose from. Then I look at them more closely and they really both seem to have a lot of what I'm looking for.

One part of me wants to say, "When in doubt, vote for the Democrat to encourage the Democrats to stop sucking up to the abortion lobby." Part of me wants to say "Overall, though I'm not personally a Republican, the Republican party is closer to what I hold dear so I should encourage Republicans."

I'm doing an analysis on my choices for State House and the tipping point may end up being that the one guy had his people handing out coffee and cocoa to the people waiting in line to see Governor Palin on a cold October morning! (Not just for the cocoa! It just shows a go-getter attitude and an ability to attract supporters who think on their feet.)

    What are y'all's thoughts?

(Ah, for the days I had a friend I saw totally eye-to-eye on across the issues. She was a stay-at-home mom who did a lot of community and political volunteering so she knew more about the candidates than I did, so I could just call her on election day and say, "Who am I voting for?" and know she'd tell me who I'd have chosen had I had the time to do the research myself. Now we live in different parts of the state and that doesn't work any more!)

Child with Down syndrome denied life insurance - any advice?

A family wanted to put riders for their kids on their life insurance policy. Their other children were accepted. The child with Down syndrome was not -- even though she's in overall good health aside from annual monitoring for a heart problem.

I can understand using an actuarial table to charge a higher premium to offset any actual increased risk that the child will die during the time the policy is in effect. But it's not like this kid is moribund and her parents are trying to insure her for a bundle so they'll hit the jackpot when she buys the farm. They're just trying to get a small rider to cover funeral expenses should she die, as they're doing with their other children.

    This just seems so wrong.

And I'd like to know what insurance company is doing this, and if this company is alone in having such a coldhearted policy.

1954: Abortion by naturopath proves fatal

Sylvia Redman, who had a license to practice naturopathy, signed a written confession on October 20, 1954 regarding the death of Betty Ladel on October 19. Redman said that Betty came to her on October 8, saying that she thought she was pregnant. Her period was about a week late. Redman said Betty asked her "if I could help her get rid of the baby. I told her the danger of everything and she said she was not afraid. I told her I would rather her to go somewhere else and have the baby stopped in twenty four hours, because my work is slow. I do it by shooting a little air up into the womb. (uterus) By going through the cervix into the uterus, where the embryo is carried. She told me she wanted me to do it."

Redman said that she used a speculum and syringe to shoot some air into Betty's uterus, though she wasn't really sure if Betty was pregnant. She told Betty to return every other day. Each time Betty returned, Redman shot a little more air into her uterus, asking her if she felt anything. Sometimes Betty responded in the affirmative, sometimes not.

On October 19, Betty again went to Redman, who took uer upstairs, "laid her on a table used for females," and inserted a canula into Betty's uterus. She pushed five syringes full of air into Betty's uterus and asked Betty if she could feel it. Betty said that she could, a little. "And she looked up at me and said I feel choky, and then she passed out."

Redman said, "I used artificial respiration. I picked her up in my arms and laid her on the floor. And I slung water at her to try to revive her, and then I had a lady downstairs to call an ambulance. The ambulance came and got her and took her to Harris Hospital. After this happened I called a friend and asked her what to do and she said throw all that stuff away. So I went upstairs to get the instruments that I had used, and I had just come downstairs when Mr. Howerton and Mr. Armstrong and another detective walked in. I told them I'd be with them in a minute and I kinda hid the instruments that I had used on Betty Ladel behind me, and I stepped into the back and put the instruments in a garbage can. Then I came back out to talk to Mr. Howerton and I admitted to him what I had done and he asked me what I had used on Betty Ladel, and I took him out (to) the garbage can and showed him exactly where I had hidden them and what I had used. He asked me if I had performed an abortion on her and I told him no, but I wasn't telling him the truth. And I gave these instruments to Mr. Howerton and Mr. Armstrong and the other detective. After she had told me that she felt choky, and after I laid her on the floor, I noticed she was bleeding from the vagina."

An autopsy verified that Betty had indeed been pregnant, and blamed her death on the introduction of air into her uterus to produce abortion. The six or seven week old embryo was entact and undamaged. Betty's blood vessels had air in them, and she had died from an air embolism.

The testimony of the authorities who investigated the case supports the confession. The police indicated that upon questioning, Redman showed them the table she'd used and retrieved the instruments from a garbage can.

Redman was convicted of murder by attempted abortion, and was sentenced to confinement in the penitentiary for four years.

1990: One of a string of deaths at the hands of a New York quack

19-year-old Christina Goesswein, ("Patient A" in medical board documents) was almost 23 weeks pregnant when she went to the office of Dr. Braz Bortot to get a safe and legal abortion. Dr. Bortot referred her to Dr. Moshe Hachamovitch in Bronx, New York.

Christina went to the office of Dr. Hachamovitch on October 17, 1990, and the first part of the three-day abortion procedure was started that day. She was sent home and told to return the following day to have her cervix dilated even further for the abortion, which would take place on the 19th. She came back on the 18th and had more laminaria inserted then returned home. That evening, her boyfriend called the doctor's office because Christina was having cramping. He was told to give her pain medicine.

Christina's boyfriend called again several hours later because he felt that she was running a fever, but Christina told Dr. Hachamovitch's employee who was taking call that evening that she was okay.

Early in the morning of the 19th, the boyfriend called the employee again because Christina was experiencing heavy bleeding, cramping and vomiting. Christina stated that she felt that she was in labor. The employee instructed Christina to go to Hachamovitch's office where she and the doctor would meet her. They all met at the office some time between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m. After arriving at the office, Christina lost control of her bowels. Hachamovitch then delivered her 24-week fetus in one piece.

Because Christina was not recovering as she should have, Dr. Hachamovitch decided to admit her to an area hospital, but before this could be done, Christina quit breathing and her heart stopped.

Somebody called 911 at about 4:20 a.m., and Dr. Hachamovitch began CPR. Christina was taken to a Bronx hospital where she was pronounced dead at 6:11 a.m. on October 19, due to an amniotic fluid embolism (amniotic fluid in her bloodstream).

Hachamovitch's license was suspended over his false documentation regarding administration of oxygen, and the extent of Christina's blood loss.

In its documents, the medical board notes that Hachamovitch failed to record "identity of the individual who performed and interpreted a sonogram of Patient A;" "failed to record the size and type of laminaria…;" "failed to properly address the possibility that Patient A might require emergency medical care near her home… in the course of the two days between the insertion of laminaria on October 17 and the scheduled performance of an abortion on October 19;" "made no effort to provide for more local and immediate medical care for Patient A at or about 3:05 a.m. on October 19, when he learned that Patient A was experiencing heavy bleeding, vomiting and severe cramps…."

The board faulted Hachamovitch for doing an abortion "in the face of heavy bleeding, severe cramps and vomiting and involuntary bowel movements." "Respondent failed to arrange for Patient A to be taken to a hospital before performing any procedure on her so that her condition could be properly managed;" "performed the abortion and D&E without proper monitoring and resuscitative equipment;" "failed to adequately prepare the patient for foreseeable complications;" "failed to have a licensed physician or certified nurse anesthetist present during the surgery…;" "inappropriately sedated Patient A."

"Once Patient A went into cardiopulmonary arrest Respondent failed to properly attempt her resuscitation." The board also found fault with Hachamovitch because he did not "describe adequately … the procedure used to terminate the pregnancy;" "failed to perform and/or record the findings of a gross examination of Patient A’s uterine contents immediately post-abortion;" "intentionally represented in his record for patient A that she received continuous oxygen by mask despite knowing that this was untrue;" "intentionally represented in his record that Patient A had no bleeding at all despite knowing that this was untrue."

Christina wasn't the only patient that paid with her life for Hachamovitch's slovenliness. He allowed Tanya Williamson to lapse into cardiac arrest in his recovery room. He let Luz Rodriguez bleed to death. He hired a quack named John Biskind to run his A to Z mill in Arizona -- whereupon Biskind tried to abort a near-term baby (so much for Barack Obama's assurance that abortionists are perfectly capable of determining beforehand if a fetus is "pre-viable" or not!) and allowed Lisa Bardsley and Lou Anne Herron to bleed to death. And he hired John Coleman to abort at his clinic in Texas, letting the clinic run to seed and Jammie Garcia to die a horrible death from a septic abortion.

Gosh, it'd be nice if the mainstream media got as bent out of shape about a guy running a chain of seedy, dangerous abortion mills as they get about whether or not Joe the Plumber goes by his first name or not!

There's a whole discussion here about people going by their middle names -- often because they share the same first name with another family member.

Lots of people go by their middle names. G. Gordon Liddy. H. Howard Hunt. F. Scott Fitzgerald. J. Paul Getty. M. Scott Peck. "Ah!" the MSM will cry. "They at least are HONEST about it, putting their initial there so you know that they're using their middle name!"

Well guess what? Paul McCartney isn't PAUL! He's JAMES Paul McCartney! I guess all those MSM Obamatrons will have to burn their Beatles albums now.

And what will they do when they realize that President Grover Cleveland was actually STEPHEN Grover Cleveland?

Get a life, you dillwads! The job of the media is to go after those who are in power, not average Joes -- or Sams or Toms or Dicks or Harrys -- who were minding their own business in their front yards when some wannabe dictator tried to pester them for a sound bite.

    Take the Twisted Puns quiz

    My new quiz is up!

Let me know how you did.

    Search: "Woman dies from abortion"

I'll provide a few examples from my files:

  • Margaret Clodfelter was only 19 years old when a septic abortion killed her, leaving her young son motherless.

  • Becky Roe was sent home to Arkansas from her safe, legal New York abortion; she developed sepsis and died.

  • Lynn McNair slipped into a coma from which she never recovered, leaving two children motherless.

  • Dorothy Muzorewa's husband came home to find their apartment covered with blood, and his wife dying from a secret abortion.

  • Deborah Lozinski was 17 years old when her safe, legal abortion sent her into a fatal coma.

  • Dawn Mendoza started screaming and gasping for breath during her abortion.

  • Pamela Wainwright's doctor pumped carbon dioxide into her bloodstream by mistake as he was preparing her for an abortion and tubal ligation, causing her heart to go into vapor lock and stop pumping.

  • Wendy Roe left two children motherless when she died from complications of a saline abortion.

  • Erna Fisher choked to death on her own vomit on the abortion table.

  • Diane Boyd, a mentally disabled rape victim, was given drugs that had a fatal interaction with her usual medication.

  • Germaine Newman's mother found her dead on the bathroom floor the day after her abortion.

  • Roxanne Roe died of an overdose of anesthetic for her safe and legal abortion.

  • Aborting a baby with Down syndrome

That search brought somebody to my blog. So I'll talk a bit about aborting babies with Down syndrome.

Watching such an abortion led to the conversion of a pro-choice nurse into a life advocate.

The blogosphere was abuzz about the professor who told his class that every baby with Down syndrome should be aborted -- a clear case of bigotry. (Imagine if the screening wasn't for an extra 21st chromosome, but for a "gay gene", or for dark skin pigment. What if it was for the propensity to go bald? You'd see how bigoted the professor was being.)

There are enough people who agree with him that 90% of babies diagnosed in-utero with Down syndrome are aborted -- and three kids with the standard set of genes die for every "defective" Down syndrome baby that's weeded out. Is this an acceptable level of collateral damage? To kill three civilian bystanders for every one of the "enemy"? Why aren't the people raising hell about civilian deaths in Iraq raising hell about the innocent bystanders being killed in the war against babies with Down syndrome?

The idea that life with Down syndrome wasn't worth living cost Linda Boom her life as well as her baby's life. Christin Gilbert, on the other hand, was most likely subjected to an abortion because she herself had Down syndrome. She, like Linda, ended up as dead as her baby.

Then there is the Italian woman who ended up with two dead babies because she was willing to gamble her "normal" child's life in order to eliminate the one with Down syndrome. She got rid of the "defective" baby. Was this achievement worth the price she paid?

I need to say it again: Three genetically ordinary babies are killed for every one with Down syndrome we weed out. Evidently these kids are such a horror that it's worth killing any number of "normal" kids, just to exterminate them.

Fight the bigotry against kids with Down syndrome by supporting Band of Angels. They make beautiful calendars and greeting cards featuring kids with DS. They also have "Cenebrate Packages" that you can sponsor to help parents make the adjustment to a DS diagnosis. You can also buy Common Threads, a breathtaking coffee-table book featuring essays and pictures illustrating life with Down syndrome.

If there is a doll collecter on your gift list, consider one of the beautiful dolls by Downi Creations.

There are also some beautiful products available at Cafe Press:
*Down syndrome isn't scary - it's just different

New Illegal Abortion Chart and Image Map for Your Use

You'll notice that I have a new pie chart showing the percent of pre-legalization done by doctors and other folks.

Well, I've turned it into an image map. Go check it out here: Image Map.

If you want to put it on your page, so your visitors can click on examples of illegal abortions done by doctors, paramedical, and so forth, just paste the code I provided onto your page.

If your page gets a lot of traffic, please don't hot-link back to graphic at RealChoice. Instead, copy the image, upload it to your own site, then replace the

Searches: Atlanta abortions, videos, anencephaly, and more

Some people were looking for safe abortions in Atlanta. Good luck with that. Atlanta Surgicenter is the National Abortion Federation member where Catherine Pierce underwent her fatal abortion. It might be the same facility where Geneva Calton's fatal abortion was performed. Sara Niebel underwent her fatal abortion at Midtown Hospital in Atlanta. Midtown was a National Abortion Federation member facility that experienced numerous scandals pertaining to illegal late abortions and filthy, chaotic conditions. Jacqueline Reynolds died after an abortion at Grady Memorial in Atlanta. Arnetta Hardaway's fatal abortion was performed in Atlanta. Angela Scott and Deloris Smith were both fatally injured within the same hour at Atlanta Women's Pavillion. Demitrice Andrews underwent her fatal abortion somewhere in Atlanta. Allegra Roserberry's fatal abortion was performed at Emory Hospital in Atlanta. I'd recommend going someplace that really cares about women, not about just taking their money and tallying them up for political gain. Try Atlanta Care Center, Atlanta Pregnancy Resource Center, or one of these many centers.

If you're looking for abortion videos, the best of the net are here.

Somebody was asking, "Why not c-section instead of abortion if woman's life at risk in 3rd trimester?" An excellent question, and one the abortion lobby has never satisfactorily answered. They just hem and haw about how in some hypothetical situation some doctor might get the idea that taking extra steps to kill the baby before delivering it will somehow help the mother. And when you look at how the abortion lobby defines "health", it becomes clear that this whole issue of "health" and "life" is just a smokescreen.

I have information here about anencephaly and abortion.

Suzanne Logan awoke paralyzed and unable to speak after her safe and legal abortion, performed by Gideon Kioko at Maryland's notorious Hillview abortion mill.

Somebody wanted to know about 14-year-old girls and abortions. Germaine Newman's mother found her dead on the bathroom floor the day after her safe and legal abortion. "Julie" developed septicemia and died after a safe, legal abortion in New York in 1972. Deloris Smith was 14 years old when National Abortion Federation member Atlanta Women's Pavillion managed to fatally injure her and another teenage patient almost simultaneously. Sandra Kaiser killed herself by leaping into traffic after a secret abortion arranged by Planned Parenthood. "Mindi" survived her abortion at Arizona's notorious A to Z abortion mill, but she needed a hysterectomy to save her life. Shytaura G. wound up needing a hysterectomy after her abortion by Steve Lichtenberg. A 14-year-old girl was injured in a secret abortion performed on her by Jesse Floyd. And a 14-year-old girl suffered second and third degree burns to her calf from a lamp while she was under general anesthesia for her abortion at Eastern Women's Center.

Somebody else wanted abortion at age 13. I have these deaths:
    Deanna Bell
and Dawn Ravenelle. Cynthia T. suffered kidney failure and nearly died after her abortion at the Inglewood entity in California. Joseph Melnick was convicted of infanticide after he killed the live-born infant of a 13-year-old girl he'd attempted an abortion on. In 1998, a Planned Parenthood in Arizona performed two abortions on a 13-year-old girl who was being abused by her 23-year-old foster brother. Abortion advocates tried to arrange an abortion for Spring Adams, who was pregnant after being raped by her father, rather than report him so he could be arrested; he shot her dead in her bed while the abortion arrangements were being made. And federal lawmakers have been trying to pass the Child Custody Protection Act after a 13-year-old Pennsylvania girl was brought out-of-state by her abuser's mother for a secret abortion.

Two Brooklyn back-alley abortion deaths, five years apart

On October 18, 1939, Miss Alice Corbett, age 28, of Brooklyn, New York, died from complications of an illegal abortion. Dr. Allen F. Murphy was sentenced to 2-10 years in Sing-Sing for Alice's death.

On October 18, 1942, 23-year-old Harriet Lichtenberg of Brooklyn died in Royal Hospital, the Bronx, from suspected criminal abortion complications. Dr. Henry Katz was indicted for first degree manslaughter in Harriet's death.

The abortions that killed Alice and Harriet were typical of pre-legalization abortions in that they were performed by physicians.

I calculated these numbers based on Mary Calderone's presentation of the 1955 Planned Parenthood Conference on Abortion, as well as the research of Nancy Howell Lee and my own anecdotal evidence collection so I have confidence that they are probably fairly accurate.

Someone who sees that their kids are beautiful

When Palin spoke in Johnstown, some of the biggest and most sustained cheering was for her support of kids with special needs. It's not just the parents who appreciate that she's there. It's people like me, who worked with folks with developmental disabilities and who feel that knife-stab in the heart every time somebody talks about aborting babies because they'd be -- you know -- defective. These are people I love, and it hurts to hear people talk as if they don't deserve to live, like they're garbage, unworthy, burdensome.

Obama thinks it's okay to stick these kids in a closet to die. Palin thinks they're "not a problem -- they're a priority".

    Guess who I agree with.

    Preemie survival rate doubles

    Survival of early babies 'doubles'

A study at one of Britain's top neonatal units found that one third of babies born between 22 and 25 weeks' gestation survived in the early 1980s but this had risen to 71 per cent by the late 1990s.

Now, as expected, the biggest improvement was in babies of 24 and 25 weeks gestation. Still:

Of eight babies born alive at 22 weeks at University College London Hospital between 1996 and 2000, four survived to go home. Between 1991 and 1995 only two were born at 22 weeks and neither lived.

For babies born at 23 weeks the survival rate increased from 44 per cent in 1991-95 to 46 per cent in the late 1990s. At 24 weeks, half the babies born between 1991 and 1995 lived. This rose to 81 per cent for those born in 1995-2000.

One third of the babies born at 25 weeks in 1991-95 survived, rising to almost three quarters in 1995-2000.

In the UK, this news has sparked public debate about whether the abortion law shouldn't be changed to prohibit aborting babies that have a chance of survival. In the US, of course, it's not about whether or not the baby could survive. It's about whether or not the adults intend to have him killed.

    What media bias redux

This graphic does a side-by-side comparison of the Obama campaign's "Talking Points" about the debate, and the New York Times blog.

The blog follows point-by-point, in the same order!

    Um.... it's just a coincidence.

    HT: Snapped Shot

Checking the facts on Obama and abortion

Obama Misleads Voters on His Abortion Record

Didn't Illinois law really protect abortion survivors anyway before the BAIPA? No. The law "on the books" — 720 ILCS 510.6 — applied only where an abortionist declared before the abortion that there was "a reasonable likelihood of sustained survival of the fetus outside the womb." So if the doctor was wrong and the baby was capable of survival, the law didn't allow anybody to second-guess him. The baby was not a baby under the law, because the abortionist had declared him or her to not be a baby by the mere decision to proceed with the abortion in the first place. (You can read here about how George Tiller determines if a fetus is pre-viable and thus suitable for aborting. I'm not sure what methods Illinois abortionists use.)

Doesn't Obama only support third trimester abortions when they're necessary to protect the mother's life or health? Only if you define "health" so broadly that "She feels distressed and thinks an abortion will alleviate her distress" actually constitutes "health".

Doesn't Obama want to focus on "common ground" efforts to support women who don't want abortions? No. He wants to cut off funding to the very pregnancy centers that help women to avoid unwanted abortions.

Searches: Hemorrhage, third trimester, and self-induced

Someone was searching for "hemorrhage after abortion". I have a list of such deaths here. Examples: Eurice Agbagaa was left in the care of an untrained receptionist as she bled out in a New York abortion clinic. Belinda Byrd was one of 24 women rushed through their abortions in the final two hours of the day. Barbaralee Davis was sent home with the face and spine of her fetus imbedded in a tear in her uterus. Shary Graham's abortionist was in too much of a hurry to get home to a pitcher of Margaritas to bother suturing the tear in her cervix.

The best abortion videos I've found are gathered here.

Some kinds of self-induced abortions are embraced by some women as natural and safe and gentle. They're also how Kris Humphrey and Penny Roe ended up killing themselves.

How many states allow third-trimester abortions? Technically, all of them, thanks to the Roe and Doe Supreme Court decisions. Three allow them only (ostensibly) to save the mother's life -- a nonsensical concept, since if the woman's life is in danger the doctor will induce labor or perform an emergency c-section; he'll not bog down the process of ending the pregnancy with extra invasive procedures to kill the baby first. Six states only allow third-trimester abortions for physical health indications. Again, the entire idea that the woman's physical health can be helped by an additional procedure to make sure that when the baby comes out, it's dead, is fatuous. 31 states allow third-trimester abortions for "physical or mental health" exceptions -- which makes sense if you think that a dead baby instead of a live one benefits a mother's mental health. And ten states have no prohibition against third-trimester abortions whatsoever.

Somebody wanted reasons not to get an abortion in the third trimester. Well, ask yourself this -- If you have such a serious health problem that the doctor needs to get that baby out of you quickly, which makes more sense: to go to your local fully-equipped hospital for a well-established procedure which can have the baby safely out within the hour, alive and in the NICU; or traveling to an outpatient facility that will have you spend three days in a motel room with your friend or relative while they take steps to ensure that the baby comes out dead. Most likely in the toilet.

I have information here about abortion in the 1940s.

A question about born alive babies and criminal charges

Somebody came to my blog after searching for "Why are there no felony prosecutions in illinois for children born alive during abortions who then die?"

Well, it turns out that in Illinois, the law Barack Obama said already protected babies who survived abortions — 720 ILCS 510.6 — applied only where an abortionist declared before the abortion that there was "a reasonable likelihood of sustained survival of the fetus outside the womb." In other words, all the abortionist would have to do is declare before performing the abortion that the fetus would not survive, and presto! Even if it did survive, even if it turned out to be full-term and perfectly healthy, legally the baby would be considered "pre-viable" and thus not entitled to medical care.

But babies in places other than Illinois should be okay, right? Well, maybe not:

  • Ximena Renearts (pictured) was born alive in a Canadian hospital, shortly after her mother had undergone an abortion in a clinic in Washington state. The attending nurse put the baby, gasping and shivering, into a bedpan, and left her in a utility closet to die. Multiple medical professionals were involved in the decision to deny the baby medical care and to simply wait for her to die. Over an hour later another nurse rescued her and sent her for proper care. Many citizens were outraged at this attempted murder, but it became clear that there would be no prosecution due to abortion politics. A police spokesman called the case "bullshit", not worth investigating. A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Health defended the choice to try to kill Ximena, saying, "As you know, this Ministry is very much in favor of giving women choices about their reproductive health." And had Ximena died, there wouldn't even have been an autopsy to determine whether or not she'd have survived had she been given care. BC Chief Coroner explained that his office only got involved if a death was "unexpected". In an abortion, he explained, the baby is expected to die. So the death of a baby born alive after an abortion is not considered worth investigating. (Hearken back to the police spokesman who called public outcry for an investigation "bullshit".

So clearly, the attitudes of the people involved in health care and law enforcement play a role in these decisions.

  • Before legalization, one of the problems prosecutors had in getting convictions was the difficulty in proving that the fetus had been alive at the time of the abortion. Remember, in America you are innocent until proven guilty. So, in order to prove that the abortionist hadn't simply been removing a fetus that had died already, the prosecutor had to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the baby had been alive. Imagine trying to prove this! All you would need is a sympathetic juror and an attorney who points out that none of the state's witnesses had put their hands on the pregnant woman's belly and felt fetal movement!

A similar dynamic plays out in cases in which live-born babies are left to die. They are extremely premature in most cases. How can the prosecutor prove that it was the neglect, and not extreme prematurity, that caused the baby's death? How can you prove that the baby would have lived, had he or she been taken to the NICU? All you can do is bring out charts showing survival rates, which prove only that the baby might have survived. This was the idea behind the Born Alive Infants Protection Act, which doesn't require that you prove that the care would definitely have saved the baby's life. All you'd have to prove is that other babies the same gestational age would have been provided with the care, which is much easier to prove.

There is a case playing out right now in Florida that will show how hard it is to prosecute these cases. A baby was born alive at a freestanding clinic. Multiple staff, as well as the mother, saw the baby moving. The clinic owner, Belkis Gonzalez (pictured), put the baby in a biohazard bag and tossed her on the roof of the building. An autopsy showed that the baby had been born alive. But will prosecutors believe that they can prove that it was being put in a biohazard bag and tossed on the roof in the hot sun that killed her? Will a juror sympathetic to the abortion cause hold out, claiming that Shanice would have died from prematurity anyway?

  • Yes, a juror can really bog down a case that way. William Baxter Waddill (pictured) strangled a 32-week baby girl in front of multiple witnesses, including a pediatrician and several NICU nurses. His trial resulted in two hung juries because some jurors clung to an obscure legal definition of "death". They said that while the baby died of manual strangulation, not of prematurity or abortion injuries, they still felt that the prosecution couldn't prove that Waddill had caused Baby W's "death" under this legal definition of death.

Considering how Gianna Jessen, Jill Stanek, and now Sarah Palin are coming under attack merely for pointing out that these things happen, can you imagine the firestorm an Illinois prosecutor could expect if he tried to pursue murder charges against an abortionist?

  • 1927: Doctor implicated in fatal Chicago abortion

On October 17, 1927, 31-year-old Auna Arola died from complications from a criminal abortion performed in Chicago on October 5. On October 29, Dr. Vincent Tonavena was arrested. He was indicted for felony murder on November 1.

How common was it for a woman, back before legalization, to find a doctor to do her abortion?
It was very common -- probably more than 90% of the time.
It was about as common as finding any other kind of abortionist -- about 50%.
It was fairly uncommon -- about 10%.
It was very rare -- less than 2%.

Paging Captain Obvious: `Car Surfing' Looks Fun in Hollywood Movies, Kills in Reality

Your tax dollars at work. The CDC did a study and found that car surfing is dangerous. Who woulda thunk it? Most injured or killed car-surfers are male, with an average age just over 17. No surprise there either.

The only surprise: Alcohol was not a factor. Nor drugs. At least not in 90% of cases. Kids are fatally stupid without any chemical additives.

It's a wonder any of us survive into adulthood sometimes.

Searches: Michael J. New, Tay-Sachs, Lysol douches, and more

Somebody wanted Michael J. New. He's the researcher who very adeptly picked apart the New York Times's slipshod reporting on the effects of parental involvement laws on teen pregnancy and abortion rates.

Somebody was looking for a perfectly innocent electrical engineer named Dr. Nabil Ghaly. Imagine their shock when they got stuff on this guy. I hope some eyes were opened. And, Dr. Ghaly, good luck with your retirement!

Belkis Gonzalez (pictured) remains a popular search, though probably not a popular person. She's the owner of a seedy Florida abortion mill, and facing possible charges for putting a live-born baby in a biohazard bag and throwing it onto the roof to die.

Somebody was looking for a Kabacy in Oregon. All I know about is Planned Parenthood abortionist and child-porn collector George Elliott Kabacy. A real piece of work.

I've gathered some of the best abortion videos on the web.

I have a lot on Barack Obama and the babies that get left to die. Not just in Illinois. Babies that Barack Obama doesn't think need their own doctor, because that would "... burden the original decision of the woman and the physician to induce labor and perform an abortion."

Lysol douche ad are a perennial favorite. And they might go a long way toward explaining the Lysol abortion stories, on two fronts. First of all, maybe some of those "abortions" were actually messed-up douches, attempts to reinvigorate the marriage, per the ads. Second of all, if something is known to kill germs (Killing germs is a good thing, right?), and it's touted by experts as healthy to put into your body, how could putting a little more of it in a bit deeper be that much of a problem? I could see some befuddled, anxious woman thinking that.

I have information here about abortion in the 1940s.

Yes, Barack Obama supports third trimester abortions.

Maria Lira was a college student killed by a safe and legal abortion in 1974.

Somebody wanted to know about Tay-Sachs and avoiding abortion. Here is information about a program to help people who carry the gene for Tay-Sachs to avoid marrying in the first place -- reducing the births of children with the fatal genetic disorder by 90% without resorting to abortion. The National Tay-Sachs & Allied Diseases Association provides support for parents. I haven't found a site that specifically supports parents carrying to term after a prenatal diagnosis of Tay-Sachs, but there are folks who have faced equally daunting news at Be Not Afraid, Carry to Term with a Negative Prenatal Diagnosis, Perinatal Hospice, and Prenatal Partners for Life. Researchers are looking into diverse strategies as gene therapy, multiple-treatment approaches, and cord blood transplants. Prayers for whoever is making this search.

    Obama, McCain, and "health"

McCain is being slammed by some people for pointing out -- quite rightly -- that the abortion lobby has such a broad definition of "health" that it can mean just about anything. NARAL, for example, whined "He really used air quotes and mocked women’s health as a valid reason for abortion care!"

No, he wasn't mocking real health concerns. Read on and you will understand.

First of all, the idea of a "health" indication for a third-trimester abortion is fatuous. The standard of care for over fifty years has been to do one of three things:

    1. Stop trying to halt premature labor (which the mother's health problem will often trigger) and just allow the baby to be born.
    2. Perform an emergency c-section.
    3. Induce labor.

These are the procedures that a conscientious physician will perform, usually trying to time decisions to maximize the survival chances of the baby while minimizing risks to the mother. This is the standard of care -- a standard that any woman with a real health problem late in pregnancy deserves.

One of my friends, in fact, had to have three of her pregnancies terminated in the third trimester due to life-threatening health problems. The pregnancies were terminated with emergency c-sections. My friend has three live children from those terminated pregnancies. My daughter had to have her pregnancy terminated in the third trimester due to gestational diabetes. The termination was called "inducing labor" and she has a live child as a result of that termination for health reasons.

It's totally nonsensical to claim that it benefits the mother's health in any way to perform an additional procedure, either before or during the legitimate medical care being provided, to achieve a dead fetus. The procedure in question usually involves jamming a huge needle through the mother's abdominal wall into the baby's heart, injecting the same drug used to execute criminals. What possible health problem can the mother have that would require a doctor to do this additional procedure, which carries a risk of infection, as well as a risk of getting the deadly drug into the mother's bloodstream by accident? Does this even pass the basic logic test?

You can gauge how nonsensical the idea is when you notice that the vast majority of these late abortions are done in outpatient settings. The woman, accompanied by a friend or family member, travels to the outpatient facility. For two or three days, she stays in a motel room with her companion, making a daily visit to the outpatient facility to have procedures done to force her cervix open. What possible medical problem can she have where a doctor would prescribe spending three days in a motel room with a companion who has no medical training? Why, if the woman's health is in danger, would she not be in a hospital, with 24-hour medical supervision?

Obstetricians who specialize in high-risk pregnancies hospitalize their patients. It's not high-risk obstetricians who are doing these procedures. It's abortionists.

When the woman has health problems late in pregnancy, the only logical reason to take extra steps to kill the fetus before you get it out -- is to kill the fetus. There's nothing that benefits the mother's health to subject her to the extra invasive fetocidal process.

Now, lest you think I'm making all this up:

Listen to this psychiatrist discuss the "health" reasons that are used to justify late-term abortions at George Tiller's practice.

Read here what an abortion supporter has to say about Barack Obama's support of late abortions.

And in all the third-trimester abortion malpractice and death cases I've seen, not a single one was being performed for a health reason. Not a single one even for fetal indications such as anencephaly.

  • Mary W., whose baby was born alive and subsequently strangled by her abortionist, was a teenager whose obstetrician wanted to make an adoption referral. She found William Waddill, who was willing to abort her 32 week baby.

  • Tiller patient Christin Gilbert (pictured) had Down syndrome -- but was in excellent health right up until the abortion that killed her.

  • Abortionist Douglas Karpan initiated a third-trimester abortion on a teen who changed her mind, who had no health concerns.

  • Teen Denise Montoya died from complications of a third-trimester abortion, performed when she had no health indications.

  • Lou Anne Herron sought a third-trimester abortion because she was going through a divorce.

  • Magdalena Rodriguez had no health concerns when she went to Suresh Gandotra for the third-trimester abortion that killed her.

  • Seedy abortionist Steve Brigham did at least one third-trimester abortion in his New York office -- on a patient whose health issues actually contraindicated a procedure as risky as an abortion.

  • Midtown Hospital got caught performing third-trimester abortions for unconfirmed fetal indications.

Even abortion activist Ron Fitzsimmons admitted that the bulk of these abortions are performed for social reasons.

McCain is not being callous. Obama is -- by pretending that subjecting a woman to the needless risks of an abortion constitutes "health care".

As for NARAL, you can read here about how they stand against common-sense definitions of health, and stand firm for the Doe vs. Bolton definition of "health" -- which is broad enough to sail an oil tanker through.

Maria Lira was a 19-year-old college student when she went to Riveria Hospital on October 14, 1974, to undergo a safe, legal abortion. After she'd been discharged, Maria had problems and returned. Staff perfromed a D&C, then discharged her again. That night, she went to the emergency room due to excessive bleeding. She was sent to Torrance Memorial Hospital for treatment. Maria died at Torrance Memorial on October 16. The autopsy found a decomposing fetus in her uterus, which had caused infection and DIC (disseminated intravacsular coagulopahty). The DIC prevented clotting, causing the hemorrhage that killed Maria.

1923: Criminal abortion kills Chicago teen

On October 16, 1923, 16-year-old Lauretta Schranz died at Chicago Hospital, from complications of a criminal abortion performed somewhere in Chicago on October 2. Ethel Davis and Lena Rumenstein were held by the coroner in Lauretta's death. Their professions were not listed on my source document. Davis was indicted by a grand jury for felony murder on November 15.

  • Whose body is it?

It's Bridezilla's body! If you want to be her bridesmaid!

And I have to say, I saw it coming when the featured Bridezilla was Korean. Korean weddings are literally all about the pictures. Throughout the entire ceremony there's a crew of women decked out like a cross between bellhops and fight attendants, straightening the bride's dress (reaching up her skirts if necessary to straighten out her slip), dabbing tears from her eyes with Q-Tips, fluffing the veil, etc., while an entire crew of photographers and videographers stalks about like National Geographic on Assignment, popping out of the foliage. There are fog machines, bubble machines, confetti guns. I saw a wedding hall with a glass carriage that would bring the bride in from aloft, depositing her at the head of a spiral staircase. A co-worker said she has seen brides rigged with wires so they could fly into the wedding hall.

I can't make up my mind which to shake my head over more, the fact that brides think they have every right to demand cosmetic procedures from the wedding party, the fact that bridesmaids comply, or the way the worst of all cultures seems to be bubbling to the top at weddings.

  • landmark womens center: Though it sounds like a name for a clinic, it's actually just the office of Mi Yong Kim, who performed the fatal abortion on Adelle Roe in 2002. This is a common gambit among abortionists. They give their offices a name that sounds like a clinic, leading patients to assume that the place is a clinic and thus subject to the kinds of regulations and inspections a clinic would be subject to. However, since they're legally just the physician's private practice, they're subject to very little oversight.

  • More scare tactics from the abortion lobby

My email from NARAL was headed, "Does John McCain Understand Women Could Die?‏"

Presumably, if McCain nominated strict constructionist Supreme Court justices, Roe might be overturned, returning abortion to the states.

And, supposedly, this would result in droves of women reflexively reaching for the coathangers.

First of all, let's reiterate an inconvenient little fact that NARAL and other members of the abortion lobby tries to keep hidden: Women are dying now. And the abortion lobby knows this. They just don't want you to know this.

Ah, but wouldn't more women die if abortion were to be re-criminalized?

The assumption -- the unquestioned, unproven assumption -- is that making abortion legal reduces abortion mortality. But let's look at the data. Just look at the abortion deaths since 1940:

You'll see that abortion deaths were plummeting -- a fall even abortion guru Christopher Tietze attributed to the availability of blood transfusions and antibiotics -- long before legalization.

The drop leveled off in the 1950s -- with the introduction of The Pill!

It then resumed its fall in the 1960s.

    Before abortion was legalized.

In fact, legalization didn't seem to have any real impact at all. The trend just continued where it had been:

Attributing the fall in abortion deaths to legalization is fatuous.

And anybody who takes an honest look at the data knows this.

So who are they trying to fool? And why?

    Never Find Out!

Why do people have so much blind, fanatical faith in Barack Obama when he's proven again and again to be at best inept, at worst a typical corrupt Chicago politician? The organization he gave $800,000 to for a "get out the vote" drive has been caught red-handed in massive voter registration fraud. But if you call him and ACORN to account, you're told that you're "trying to disenfranchise the downtrodden." Yeah, like Necro-Americans?

    It's frightening.

Quit listening to what he says, and start looking at what he does.

1990: Abortion doc fails to diagnose ectopic, sends patient home to die

On October 15, 1990, 23-year-old Angela Satterfield underwent a safe, legal abortion.

The abortionist did not diagnose Angela's ectopic pregnancy. He simply performed an abortion procedure and sent her home.

That evening, the undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy ruptured. Angela was found dead in her home. She had hemorrhaged.

Her death certificate only mentions the ectopic pregnancy and the hemorrhage, but her autopsy notes the failure of the abortionist to diagnose the ectopic pregnancy.

In practice, does this hold true?
Yes. Women who choose abortion have lower rates of death from undiagnosed ectopic pregnancies.
No. Women who choose abortions are more likely to die from undiagnosed ectopic pregnancies.

Lynette is one of many deaths currently attributed to Inglewood Women's Hospital (aka Inglewood Women's Clinic) in Los Angeles County. The others are Yvonne Tanner, Kathy Murphy, Belinda Byrd, Cora Lewis, and Elizabeth Tsuji.

1854: Oil of Tansy Leads to Abortion Death

Mary L. Stone, a 26-year-old native of England, was living in New York City with her husband, George, in 1854. Some time in late August, she left her husband and went to live with William Mills in New Haven, Connecticut. White at Mills' home, Mary took oil of tansy as an abortifacient. She stated that she had done this at the recommendation of Mrs. Britton, who denied the charge.

After taking the oil of tansy, Mary became very ill. About five weeks later, she returned to New York, going to stay with a friend. She sent for her husband. After seeing his wife's condition, Mr. Stone had her taken to New York Hospital. There, she died the night of Sunday, October 15.

Her death was attributed to "exhaustion produced by abortion."

1926: Woman dead at Chicago hospital after abortion

On October 15, 1926, 23-year-old Ethel Horner died at Chicago's Jackson park Hospital from an abortion performed earlier that day. Dr. Albert Peacock was arrested the following day. On November 15, 1926, he was indicted for felony murder.

    1915: Who killed Anna Anderson?

On October 15, 1915, Anna Anderson, a 25-year-old unmarried woman, went to the office of Dr. A. A. Ausplund. She had previously gone to another doctor who had examined her and found her to be about three months pregnant. She‘d asked him to perform an abortion, but he'd refused.

Dr. Auspland said that Anna was ill upon her arrival at his office, and asked him to examine her. He attempted to do so, but she gasped in pain as soon as he'd inserted his fingers. He said he immediately saw that she was dying and went out for a stimulant, seeking help from a female physician practicing in the same building.

The two doctors, assisted by a third doctor, were unable to revive Anna.

The coroner and other witnessed testified that Anna was found with her skirts removed. They found a bloody sheet in Dr. Auspland's office, as well as a bloody doctor's coat. Several medical instruments were noted, one of which appeared to have a portion of placenta on it. The floor in his operating room was wet, as well as a Kelly pad.

The autopsy found signs of recent pregnancy of about three months duration, as well as trauma to the interior of the uterus. It was estimated that the injuries were sustained about five to eight hours before death. The undertake who embalmed Anna said that there was almost no blood in her body.

    Another ad ABC won't run

ABC evidently stands for "Abortion Boosters Corporation".

NB: Somebody at Jill Stanek's blog mentioned that the fetus looked older than a 12 week fetus. That's because this fetus is shown 12 weeks after conception, which is 14 weeks of pregnancy so it's a 14-week fetus. A 12-week fetus is only 10 weeks old. Confused yet?

Nothing posting abortion clinic ads won't fix!

60% of nation would vote YES on SD's Initiated Measure 11

Here's the juicy part, reflecting on a poll two weeks ago:

The results showed the terms pro-life and "pro-choice" are confusing to a large percentage of Americans. Even though the survey found 60 percent of respondents took a pro-life position against all or most abortions, 50 percent of Americans called themselves "pro-choice" while 44 percent said they were pro-life. In fact, the Marist poll found 5 percent of people who self-identified as "pro-choice" said abortions should never be permitted, 3 percent said only to save the life of the mother and 20 percent said only in cases of the life of the mother, rape or incest.

In other words, 28 percent of Americans who call themselves "pro-choice" actually take a pro-life position opposing 98 percent or more abortions.

Granted, it'd be interesting to see if people self-identifying as "pro-life" were equally confused.

But what I'd like to see is just more abortion advertising. Just mail out copies of local abortion clinic ads. Prochoicers would be shocked and dismayed by things like these ads at Abortion Clinics Online:

Or maybe they'd just forget they'd seen them.

Read here for some information about "health" reasons for abortions.

Third Trimester Abortions and the Law

First, I recommend that you bookmark the Abortion Law Homepage for future reference.

    In a nutshell:

    1. Roe vs. Wade, the most famous abortion case, allowed no "restrictions" on abortion in the first two trimesters. For the third trimester, the states were allowed to make some restrictions -- as long as they allowed abortions for "health" reasons. The companion decision, Doe vs. Bolton, then defined health so broadly that really, anything could suffice:

[M]edical judgment may be exercised in the light of all factors - physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman's age - relevant to the wellbeing of the patient. All these factors may relate to health.

I must point out at this point that prior to Roe and Doe, there was no such thing as a third trimester abortion. Abortion was, by definition, killing the fetus prior to viability. So post-viability abortions were not only invented but enshrined as a supposed Constitutional right.

And unless you define "health" so broadly as to include family concerns (which no doubt would include financial considerations), the whole idea of a post-viability "health" abortion is nonsensical on its face. If a pregnancy is endangering the mother's life or health, the standard of care has been to induce labor or perform a c-section, based on the woman's particular needs. With a c-section, the baby can be out of the womb and in the NICU within the hour, the pregnancy is over, and the mother can be cared for by medical professionals. It's nonsensical to say that it would preserve her "health" or her life to take additional steps to ensure that the fetus emerges dead.

The only logical reason to perform a post-viability abortion -- to stop during delivery to kill the baby -- is to achieve the death of the fetus, either for social reasons or because the baby has a disability of some sort.

Again, a "health" justification for a post-viability abortion is nonsensical, but because of Roe and Doe, the states must include them in order to pass Constitutional muster. Occasionally you'll see an old pre-Roe law still on the books that 's not enjoined, either because there are no abortionists in that state who want to perform late abortions, or because the law isn't being enforced so there's no point in going to court over it.

    2. As the Abortion Law Homepage notes, after the Webster decidion in 1989 and the Planned Parenthood vs. Casey decision in 1992, the Supreme Court allowed states to put some regulations (such as waiting periods or informed consent) into place, and allowed the states to be a bit firmer about exactly what constituted "health". Still, no state can actually ban third trimester abortions, because if this "health" requirement in Doe.

    3. So now we have a hodge-podge. Public Agenda shows a map based on information from the Alan Guttmacher Institute, an abortion-advocacy organization.

For specifics, I'll turn to NARAL Pro-Choice America, an abortion-advocacy organization co-founded by Bernard Nathanson (who later repented) and Larry Lader (who remained proud of his abortion activities up to his death). I heartily recommend browsing these pages and comparing the laws as written with abortion as practiced in those states. You'll find that the laws are routinely broken in many states. In New York, for example, a second physician is supposed to be present when abortions are done past 20 weeks. The only real effect of these laws is to make it very difficult for women injured in abortions past 20 weeks to sue, because the lack of the second physician makes the abortion illegal, and the woman therefore can't sue for damages she incurred while she was doing something illegal -- even though the woman would not know that the abortion was technically illegal. One abortionist got out of having to settle with the family of a 12-year-old girl who was left blind and sterile after her abortion because of this manipulation of the law.

Sample post-viability abortion restrictions as of this writing are as follows (verbatim from NARAL). Notice that if the state just has a "health" exception to their "restriction", then it is the Doe definition of health, which could be anything the woman wants it to be. It's only when the legislatures start to be specific that NARAL starts to object that the "restriction" is objectionable. I clicked on every 10th state, plus Utah (because I know that their post-viability restriction is enjoined by the courts and thus can't be enforced) and Kansas (where George Tiller does abortions on all comers, regardless of gestational age, all justified on "health" considerations -- thus Kansas has in effect no post-viability restriction; it's all in how the states choose to enforce the laws).

  • Florida: Florida's post-viability restriction provides that no abortion may be performed in the third trimester of pregnancy unless two physicians certify in writing that the abortion is necessary to preserve the woman's life or health. If an abortion is performed during viability, the physician must "use that degree of professional skill, care, and diligence" most likely to preserve the life and health of the fetus except that "the woman's life and health shall constitute an overriding and superior consideration to the concern for the life and health of a fetus when such concerns are in conflict." Fla. Stat. Ann. § 390.0111(1), (4) (Enacted 1978; Last Amended 1998; Last Renumbered 1998).

NARAL Pro-Choice America supports the legal framework established in Roe v. Wade and does not oppose restrictions on post-viability abortions, such as Florida's, that contain adequate exceptions to protect the life and health of the woman. NARAL Pro-Choice America opposes Florida's law because it is unconstitutional to the extent that it prohibits pre-viability abortions by defining viability at the third trimester of pregnancy. A state may not prohibit abortion prior to viability, which is that point at which a fetus is capable of "meaningful life" outside of a woman's body. Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113, 163 (1973). Because viability is a point that varies with each pregnancy, states may not declare that it occurs at a particular gestational age. Colautti v. Franklin, 439 U.S. 379, 388-89 (1979).

  • Kansas: Kansas' post-viability abortion restriction provides that no abortion may be performed after viability unless the attending physician and another financially and legally independent physician determine that an abortion is necessary to preserve the woman's life or continuation of the pregnancy would cause a "substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function" of the woman. Kan. Stat. Ann. § 65-6703(a) (Enacted 1992; Last Amended 1998). The Kansas Attorney General has interpreted this exception to include mental health. Op. Kan. Att'y. Gen. 2000-020.

Holding that no case or controversy existed because no one had been prosecuted under the post-viability ban, a state court dismissed a lawsuit brought by Dr. George Tiller, an abortion provider, challenging its constitutionality. Tiller v. Mitchell, No. 81,285 (Kan. Sept. 30, 1998). However, the state later charged Dr. Tiller with violating the ban, and Dr. Tiller is currently challenging the ban's constitutionality in a motion to dismiss these charges. Complaint, State v. Tiller, No.07CR2112 (18th D. June 28, 2007); Motion to Dismiss, State v. Tiller, No. 07CR2112 (18th D. Jul. 2, 2007).

In addition, Kansas bans the performance of certain post-viability abortion procedures (not including the suction curettage procedure, suction aspiration procedure, and certain dilation and evacuation procedures). Kan. Stat. Ann. § 65-6721 (Enacted 1998). This ban provides that performance of certain post-viability abortion procedures is a felony, unless the physician and another legally and financially independent physician determine that the abortion is necessary to preserve the woman's life or that continuation of the pregnancy would cause a "substantial and irreversible impairment of a major physical or mental function" of the woman.

NARAL Pro-Choice America supports the legal framework established in Roe v. Wade and does not oppose restrictions on post-viability abortions so long as they contain adequate exceptions to protect the life and health of the woman. NARAL Pro-Choice America opposes Kansas' post-viability restrictions because the health exceptions are dangerously narrow.

  • Maine: may be performed after viability unless necessary to preserve the woman's life or health. Me. Rev. Stat. Ann. tit. 22, § 1598 (Enacted 1979; Last Amended 1993).

NARAL Pro-Choice America supports the legal framework established in Roe v. Wade and does not oppose restrictions on post-viability abortions, such as Maine's, that contain adequate exceptions to protect the life and health of the woman.

  • New Hampshire: No restrictions on post-viability abortion.

  • Rhode Island: Rhode Island's post-viability abortion restriction provides that no abortion may be performed on a "quick child," defined as "an unborn child whose heart is beating, who is experiencing electronically-measurable brainwaves, who is discernibly moving, and who is so far developed and matured as to be capable of surviving the trauma of birth with the aid of usual medical care and facilities," unless necessary to preserve the woman's life. R.I. Gen. Laws Ann. § 11-23-5 (Enacted 1975).

NARAL Pro-Choice America supports the legal framework established in Roe v. Wade and does not oppose restrictions on post-viability abortions so long as they contain adequate exceptions to protect the life and health of the woman. NARAL Pro-Choice America opposes Rhode Island's post-viability abortion restriction because it does not contain an exception to protect the health of the woman.

  • Utah: Utah has an unconstitutional and unenforceable law that provides that no abortion may be performed after 20 weeks gestational age, measured from the date of conception, unless necessary to preserve the woman's life, to prevent "grave damage" to the woman's "medical health," or to prevent the birth of a child with grave defects. Utah Code Ann. § 76-7-302(3) (Original Statute Enacted 1973; Repealed and Reenacted 1974; Last Amended 2004).

A court held that the provision regulating abortions after 20 weeks gestational age is unconstitutional because the provision effectively defines viability at 20 weeks gestational age and ignores Supreme Court precedent that viability is a matter to be determined by an attending physician. Jane L. v. Bangerter, 102 F.3d 1112 (10th Cir. 1996), cert. denied, 520 U.S. 1274 (1997).

Utah has an additional unconstitutional and unenforceable law that provides that if the fetus is sufficiently developed to have any reasonable possibility for survival, the physician must attempt to promote, preserve, and maintain the life of the fetus, consistent with preserving the life of the woman or preventing grave damage to her medical health, and must use the medical procedure most likely to result in fetal survival in the best medical judgment of the physician. The physician may not use a medical procedure designed to kill or injure the fetus unless necessary to prevent grave damage to the woman's medical health. Utah Code Ann. §§ 76-7-307 (Original Statute Enacted 1973; Repealed and Reenacted 1974; Last Amended 1991), 76-7-308 (Original Statute Enacted 1973; Repealed and Reenacted 1974; Last Amended 1991).

A court held that these provisions are unconstitutional because they do not adequately protect the health of the woman. Jane L. v. Bangerter, 61 F.3d 1493 (10th Cir. 1995).
NARAL Pro-Choice America supports the legal framework established in Roe v. Wade and does not oppose restrictions on post-viability abortions so long as they contain adequate exceptions to protect the life and health of the woman. NARAL Pro-Choice America opposes Utah's post-viability restriction because the health exception is dangerously narrow. NARAL Pro-Choice America also opposes this law to the extent that it prohibits pre-viability abortions by defining viability at 20 weeks.

  • Wisconsin: No abortion may be performed after viability unless necessary to preserve the woman's life or health. The physician must use the available abortion method most likely to preserve the life and health of the fetus unless that method would increase the risk to the woman. Wis. Stat. Ann. § 940.15 (Enacted 1985; Last Amended 2001).

NARAL Pro-Choice America supports the legal framework established in Roe v. Wade and does not oppose restrictions on post-viability abortions, such as Wisconsin's, that contain adequate exceptions to protect the life and health of the woman.

Somebody was searching for an answer to this question:

Is there a video that shows a real partial birth abortion being performed?

Yes. It was done by Dr. Martin Haskell, who popularized the procedure. I listened to a National Abortion Federation training session in which he showed it to his buddies. It's only available to other abortionists who want to learn how to do brain-sucking abortions.

I'm betting Mark Crutcher of Life Dynamics would pay a nice sum of money to get his hands on a copy. Disgruntled abortion clinic workers take note of that!

    Two observations

    CBS: Obama’s Plane 'Smells Terrible'

Dean Reynolds of CBS News spent 12 months covering Barack Obama’s campaign before recently switching to John McCain’s election effort, and he found the differences between the two “striking” ....

Reynolds ... made these observations in his Reporter’s Notebook:

  • Obama’s campaign schedule is more hectic than McCain’s. Aides who deal with the press are often overwhelmed and uninformed about “where, when, why or how the candidate is moving about.”

  • Didn't The One bring up how running his campaign makes him qualified for President, since his campaign budget is bigger than the Wasilla city budget? Evidently he can't run a campaign very well. Imagine how he'll run the country. And he's doing this lousy job with twice as much money as McCain.

Read the rest, keeping in the back of your mind how these reporters swoon over Obama like teenagers at a pop concert:

  • The McCain campaign provides reporters with printed schedules so they can plan accordingly. Obama offers no printed schedules and dismisses complaints from reporters who wonder why.

  • McCain’s press aides are more knowledgeable and more friendly and useful to reporters than Obama staffers.

  • The GOP candidate’s events are better designed to accommodate the needs of the press corps.

  • McCain is friendly and “loquacious” with reporters when he’s on the stump. Obama holds news conferences, but seldom chats with reporters.

  • McCain’s campaign plane is better than Obama’s, which is “cramped, uncomfortable and smells terrible most of the time,” Reynolds disclosed. “Somehow the McCain folks manage to keep their charter clean, even where the press is seated.”

  • When reporters recently asked for more time to write up McCain’s remarks and prepare their reports after a speech, the campaign readily agreed. But Reynolds notes that “similar requests are often denied or ignored by the Obama campaign aides, apparently terrified that the candidate may have to wait 20 minutes to allow reporters to chronicle what he’s just said.”

  • Yet they're still in love with him, even though he treats them so badly? They behave like abused women who won't leave a relationship! And Obama acts like ... Well, like a prima donna, for starters.

Cue Weird Al singing "You Don't Love Me Anymore"

From Diverse Obama Logos: To Each According to His Hyphen

I've seen the light! Obama's buddies at ACORN are not "registering dead people to vote" -- they are seeking to defend the voting rights of Necro-Americans!

(Besides, we know that as Messiah Obama will resurrect them all, at least long enough to vote!)

Somebody even came up with a logo for them!

Why not? Every other group -- except maybe left-handed lesbian zither players with eczema -- has a designated Obama Logo.

I haven't figured out how to embed it, so you'll have to go check it out. Below are my comments on the Spanish language version with subtitles, which contains roughly the same content:

"Did you know that minority children are being aborted at more than double the rate of white children?"

Way more than double. According to the latest Alan Guttmacher Institute study, reported in the Washington Post, the abortion rate for Hispanic women is triple that of white women.

"We Hispanics are the ones most affected by the abortion industry and I want to know why."

Actually, according to the latest data, it's the Black women who are most affected. Their abortion rate is five times that of white women. But Hispanic women are still suffering disproportionately.

"Most abortion centers are found in Hispanic neighborhoods. Why is that?"

Does anybody know of any studies? I know anecdotal evidence places a lot of abortion facilities, particularly the seedy and dangerous abortion mills, in Hispanic neighborhoods.

"Spanish newspapers, magazines, radio and television are saturated with ads and commercials promoting abortion. How come?"

Rosa Rodriguez was lured into Abu Hayat's seedy abortion facility by an ad in a Spanish-language newspaper. Hayat ripped the arm off Rosa's baby then sent her home; Rosa gave birth to a maimed child (pictured) early the next morning.

Operation Rescue pointed out that Laurence Reich's chain of seedy abortion mills targeted Hispanic women, many of whom were in the country illegally and thus not likely to step forward to report malpractice or abuse for fear of deportation. Operation Rescue reports that "Reich only spent one day in jail for sexually assaulting two women at the Clinica Medica Para La Mujer De Hoy abortion mill in Panorama City.

Though Suresh Gandotra spoke no Spanish, he preyed predominately on Hispanic women. He performed a fatal, illegal third-trimester abortion on Magdalena Rodriguez.

Other abortionists who typically targeted Hispanic women have included Nicholas Braemer, Alicia Hannah (Who was targeting her own people.), La Clinica Femenina, and Clinica Eva.

Hispanics for Life has more about this.

"Abortion is not only a lucrative industry; it is also used by people who are racists as a means to eliminate our people, since they consider us to be a threat to democracy in this country."

Abortionist Edward "Fast Eddie" Allred, who owns the largest for-profit chain of abortion mills in the world, told the San Diego Union, "Population control is too important to be stopped by some right-wing, pro-life types. Take the new influx of Hispanic immigrants. Their lack of respect for democracy and social order is frightening. I hope I can do something to stem that tide. I'd set up a clinic in Mexico for free if I could. Maybe one in Calexico would help. The survival of our society could be at stake."

"Unfortunately, most people do not know the truth about abortion and its terrible consequences."

"We all instinctively know that abortion is something evil, and if it is something so terrible that we can't even see it, shouldn't we perhaps not tolerate it either?"

(Images edited out of video. Most of them are the of sound, whole unborn children, showing prenatal development, though some of the babies have clearly been removed from the womb. The video then cuts to the video showing an abortion being performed, complete with blood and the recognizable head of the now-dead baby. Other abortion images follow, showing heads, a face, hands, some intact babies from induction abortions and saline abortions (easily recognizably by discolored, mottled skin), a few early first-trimesters toward the end, and other extremely graphic pictures and bits of video. The aborted babies in question range, in my best estimate, from late first-trimester to early third-trimester. You can see the images in the Spanish language version, at Dura Realidad.)

"After seeing this video some people ask how it is possible that abortion could be legal."

"Did you know that Barack Obama supports abortions performed during the last trimester of pregnancy?"

Yes. Although when speaking to evangelicals he parses it in terms of being okay with restricting third-trimester abortions for "mental distress" or "feeling blue". But as one hardcore supporter of the abortion lobby says, if Obama really was okay with prohibiting third-trimester abortions for "mental distress" or "feeling blue":

... Obama ... is ... backing away from a proposed federal law (of which he is a co-sponsor) that envisions a much broader definition of mental health than the one he laid out this week.

That proposed federal legislation, the Freedom of Choice Act, refers to the key Supreme Court case on the issue, which was decided the same day as Roe v. Wade in 1973. In that case, Doe v Bolton, the Court said a doctor could decide to perform an abortion based on "all factors--physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman's age--relevant to the well-being of the patient. All these factors may relate to health."

Subsequent cases in the Supreme Court and lower courts have said states cannot ban abortions where the doctor deems them necessary to protect a woman's physical and mental health. Lower courts have taken that to mean a state cannot prohibit an abortion--even one post-viability--if the woman would suffer severe emotional harm without it.

Nowhere do those cases impose criteria of "serious clinical mental health diseases."

So, in supporting FOCA, Obama supports abortion, even in the third trimester, under the Doe vs. Bolton definition of "health", which includes maternal age, and financial and family concerns.

Either Obama supports third-trimester abortions, but only in those cases in which a woman has at least some mental or physical diagnosis (Tiller's patients typically have "adjustment disorder", meaning that they're not well-adjusted to being pregnant), or he supports third-trimester abortions as long as the woman can give a reason, and she doesn't need any kind of diagnosis from a doctor to justify it. Either way, he supports third-trimester abortions.

"That Obama supports the inhuman partial birth abortion?"

Obama not only supports D&X, he lent is wife and his name to fund-raising efforts to protect the practice.

"That Obama wants to finance abortions with the tax dollars you and I pay?"

Obama opposes the Hyde Amendment that banned Federal funding for elective abortions. He believes the Federal government should fund any abortion the woman signs for, because to do otherwise would constitute the Federal government using funds to intrude on abortion choices! Yes -- in Obama's view, refusing to pay for your abortion is intruding into your choice!

"As a lawmaker, Obama voted on several occasions against a law to protect babies who survived an abortion and were born alive."

    Four times, to be exact.

"Obama is committed to removing all the pro-life laws that in many states currently offer protection to unborn babies and their mothers."

Yes. He is a co-sponsor of the Freedom of Choice Act. Supporters of FOCA characterize it as merely "codifying Roe", but it goes beyond that and would strike down parental consent, restrictions on tax funding of abortions, informed consent laws, and waiting periods.

"Mr. Obama does not agree that the parents of a 13-year-old girl who is pregnant should be notified before she has an abortion."

Yes. See the above on FOCA.

"Absurd laws like this one that ignore the opinion of parents are precisely the ones that make it possible for pederasts (sic) and the sexually depraved to force young girls to have abortions in secret in order to cover up their sexual crimes."

The word the translator was looking for is "pedophile", not "pederast", since a pederast has sex with underage boys, not girls. But Verastegui's point is right on the money.

Six week embryo and abortion (GRAPHIC)

It depends if you're counting six weeks from the mother's last menstrual period (which is how pregnancy is typically measured) or if you're counting six weeks into the embryo's life. I'll use the former, since a "six week abortion" would be aborting a four-week old embryo. Follow me?

    MayoClinic.com notes these developmental milestones:

Growth is rapid this week. Just four weeks after conception, your baby is about 1/8 of an inch long. The neural tube along your baby's back is now closed, and your baby's heart is beating with a regular rhythm.

Basic facial features will begin to appear, including an opening for the mouth and passageways that will make up the inner ear. The digestive and respiratory systems begin to form as well.

Small blocks of tissue that will form your baby's connective tissue, ribs and muscles are developing along your baby's midline. Small buds will soon grow into arms and legs.

The Visible Embryo notes the following:

    SIZE: 9.0 - 11.0 mm
    TIME PERIOD: 37 - 42 days post-ovulation

    Head and Neck

Brain is well marked by its cerebral hemispheres. The hindbrain, which is responsible for heart regulation, breathing and muscle movements, begins to develop.

Future lower jaw, the first part of face to be established, is now visible while future upper jaw is present, but not demarcated.

Mesenchymal cells originating in the primitive streak, the neural crest and the prechordal plate, continue to form the skull and the face.

External retina pigment is visible and the lens pit has grown into a D shape. Nasal pits are still two separate plates, but they rotate to face ventrally as head widens.

    Thorax

Primary cardiac tube separates into aortic and pulmonary channels and the ventricular pouches deepen and enlarge, forming a common wall with their myocardial shells. ....

    Abdomen and Pelvic Regions

The mesentery, which attaches the intestines to the rear abdominal wall, holds them in position and supplies them with blood, nerves and lymphatics, is now clearly defined. Ureter, the tube that will convey urine from the kidney to the bladder, continues to lengthen. Proliferation of the coelomic epithelium indicates the gonadal primordium.

    Limbs

Hand region of upper limb bud differentiates further to form a central carpal part and a digital plate. The thigh (rostrolateral part), leg (the caudomedial part) and foot areas can be distinguished in the lower limb buds.

This embryo, taken from an ectopic pregnancy, is the correct size, so I'm assuming it's developmentally similar:
