January 12, 1980: Fatal Hemorrhage from Safe, Legal Abortion

Shirley Williams was 30 years old when she underwent a safe and legal abortion in January of 1980. She suffered from infection and hemorrhage after her abortion. On January 12, 1980, she was pronounced dead from hemorrhage.

According to death records, Shirley was black, which means she was more likely than a white woman to be sold and abortion, and then at least twice as likely to die once she got on the abortion table.  Genealogy records show that she was born and lived in Georgia, was married, and had a child.
