As a result of a legal abortion, “Rachel” contracted an infection. Post-abortion infection can be dangerous to anyone, but this time it had additional danger since she was diabetic. Serious infections in diabetic patients can affect production of certain hormones, which can work against the effects of insulin.
In Rachel’s case, the effect was so severe that she went into diabetic ketoacidosis. It would have been a very disorienting and painful way to die.
