Seeking Alberto Hodari

Again, ask and it shall be given unto you. This is what I have on Alberto Hodari:

  • Hodari is blamed for the fatal abortions on Tamia Russell (pictured) and Chivon Williams.

The following information is about lawsuits filed against Hodari.

Pamela L. alleged that she underwent an abortion by Hodari (pictured) and/or Dr. Roumell and/or other physicians. (Since it's not unusual for abortion facilities to keep a woman in the dark about who staff members are, it's not unusual for a woman to be forced to file suit against every doctor associated with the facility that did her abortion.) Whichever of them did her abortion failed to properly determine gestational age, failed to remove all of the placenta, and failed to detect Pamela's incomplete abortion. Pamela required further hospitalization and surgery. (Wayne County Circuit Court Case No. 86-627445)

Joann B. alleged that she was diagnosed pregnant by Hodari and/or staff at Northland Women's Medical Center. No ultrasound or other verification was done to verify that the positive pregnancy test was accurate. Joann underwent an abortion by Hodari on June 17, 1985. She suffered a perforated uterus and permanent injury, and required surgery. After her ordeal, Joann learned that she had not actually been pregnant. (Oakland County Circuit Court Civil Action No. 86 320211)

Bonita L. alleged that she underwent an abortion by by Hodari on September 5, 1984 at Womancare of Lakewood. Bonita was 9 weeks pregnant. About 30 minutes post-procedure, Bonita experienced bleeding and cramping, and was treated with Ergotrate. Pamela experienced shock and continued bleeding, and was "ultimately transported to Bon Secours Hospital." There, surgery found a 3 cm uterine perforation, bleeding from the right uterine artery, and perforation of the broad ligament. Bonita's injuries were so severe that the surgeon had to remove her uterus. (Wayne County Circuit Court Case No. 85-504476)

Other suits were filed against Womancare and other abortionists working for Hodari there.

Christine B. alleged an incomplete 1983 abortion at Hodari's Womancare. Valerie H. alleged failure to diagnose her ectopic pregnancy in a 1982 abortion by Sasinee Vibhasiri at Woman Care/Detroit Memorial Hospital, and in follow-up by A. Hodari at Detroit Memorial Hospital. Karen W. alleged that she underwent an abortion by Lee Stevenson at the direction of Hodari on September 9, 1980, at Detroit Memorial Hospital; she was discharged from the hospital September 15, and faulted Hodari's staff with failure to notify her of risks and complications.

In spite of all this, the Michigan medical board lists no disciplinary actions against Hodari.

Hodari on four patient deaths: Corrective action? Meh.

Michigan abortionist tied to four client deaths resists safety regulations

Notorious Michigan abortionist Alberto Hodari, who has been linked to four patient deaths, has a strategy for preventing future trouble. Not future trouble for endangered patients, mind you: Future trouble for Alberto Hodari. You see, the widened clinic exit that would allow emergency rescuers to get a gurney in and out of the building is just too expensive, so Hodari plans to just do more things that aren't abortions (rather than do fewer abortions). This will change his status from "abortion clinic" to "doctor's office" and free him from the annoying burden of regulations to protect the lives of patients.

Four women are known to have died at Hodari-run abortion mills. Fifteen-year-old Tamia Russell died less than 24 hours after a late-term abortion at Hodari’s Lathrup Villiage in 2004, the same clinic that is subject to closure. In 2007, a 17-year-old Hodari patient died from abortion complications. Chivon Williams died less than six hours after having been released from one of Hodari’s abortion clinics following a suction abortion.

In 2009, Hodari was fined $10,000 for his part in the death of 32-year-old Regina Johnson in 2003. An investigation by Voices for Women revealed that the facility where Johnson died, having never awakened from anesthesia, was not equipped with resuscitation equipment.

The idea that he needs to upgrade his facility is dismissed by Hodari and his lawyer:

Hodari’s attorney, Victor Norris, responded, “The department can’t be that concerned about irreparable harm if they gave the license in the first place.”

In other words, not only is Hodari refusing to take corrective action, he doesn't want the state to take any corrective measure either. He'd prefer that they take the Pennsylvania Approach that allowed Kermit Gosnell to run a filthy, dangerous abortion mill without any real oversight.

And Hodari was permitted to practice at several National Abortion Federation member clinics -- as was Kermit Gosnell. NAF continues to claim that they actually give a rat's ass about patient safety.

September 18: Falsified Documents and Inadequate Equipment

One of Three at a National Abortion Federation Clinic, 2003

    Dr. Alberto Hodari
According to this administrative complaint, Regina Johnson (Identified only by the initials R.J.) was 32 years old when she went to Womancare of Southfield, Michigan on September 18, 2003. The clinic was owned by Dr. Abraham Alberto Hodari, darling of Medical Students for Choice. Regina was pregnant for the fourth time, having given birth once, and either aborted or miscarried twice. Hodari, owner of Womancare, was not present at the time.

Nurse Litchtig performed an ultrasound, "even though there was no physician order for the study. She interpreted the study as showing a five week pregnancy and signed [Hodari's] name..." Nathanson initialed  the ultrasound to confirm Lichtig's finding.

CRNA Thompson did the anesthesia while Dr. Milton Nathanson did the abortion. Regina was given 200 mg of Diprivan, 2 mg Fentanyl, .2mg Gylcopyrrolate, and Droperidol to anestetize her for the abortion, which was charted as taking place from 9:55 to 10:05 a.m.

Regina was then sent to the recovery room, along with five or six other patients under the care of Litchtig. Though clinic protocol required more than one staff person present when patients were in recovery, Lichtig was sometimes alone in caring for the patients.

Though Hodari's recovery room was equipped with a stethescope, oxygen bag/valve mask, and digital blood pressure cuff, it was not equipped with an EKG monitor, pulse oximeter, or automatic blood pressure/pulse monitor with alarm for monitoring patients, or with oxygen, a defibrillator, or other resuscitation equipment.

Lichtig recorded Regina's blood pressure and pulse manually upon admission to recovery, and at 10 - 15 minute intervals. At 10:05, Regina's blood pressure and pulse were a normal 116/72 and 82. At 10:15, they were 108/56 and 88. This fall in blood pressure and rise in pulse, especially in combination, are an early sign that a patient might be suffering complications such as blood loss. However, Lichtig reported that Regina's respiration was easy and unlabored.

The document notes that Lichtig was actually performing above the call of duty: Womancare protocol only required her to check a patient's vitals upon arrival in recovery, at 15 minues, and at discharge, usually after about an hour in recovery. Hodari's protocol also allowed for the nurse to discharge patients from the clinic. "There was no provision that the patient be seen by a physician once she was transferred to the recovery room."

At 10:30, Lichtig was unable to rouse Regina, who still had a pulse and unlabored breathing. Lichtig tried for about ten minutes to awaken Regina. At about 10:40, she could no longer detect a pulse. She immediately told CRNA Thompson, who was then wheeling another patient into recovery. The two of them brought Regina back to the OR and began performing CPR. However, nobody called 911 until 11:00, twenty minutes after noting that Regina was pulseless. EMS arrived promptly, at 11:05.

EMS took Regina to Providence Hospital, where with continued CPR and got a pulse. Regina was put on life support, but was pronounced brain dead. She was taken off life support and declared dead on September 18. An autopsy determined that Regina had died from anoxic encephalopathy due to cardiac arrest. In other words, she died because her brain had been deprived of oxygen.

The Administrative Complaint found Hodari to be negligent, incompetent, and lacking in good moral character. Hodari did not contest the findings, instead cooperating with bringing his facility up to standards to pass an inspection by an anesthesiologist in February of 2009. But in the mean time, he'd performed the fatal abortions on Tamiia Russell and Chivon Williams in 2004.

The state Attorney General's office fined Hodari $10,000 on March 4, 2009, for his part in the death.

The latest National Abortion Federation update no longer lists Womancare as a member, though they were recently. They certainly were in 2004, when Chivon and Tamiia died, which is the oldest page of Michigan NAF members that I can find on the Internet Archive. Womancare was also still a member in 2007, the most recent update on the Internet Archive. I'd be very interested in having NAF Annual Reports so I could look up what years Hodari and his mills were members.

Safe and Legal in North Carolina, 1993

Thirty-six-year-old Kathy McKnight (pictured) of Charlotte, North Carolina underwent an abortion on September 17, 1993. Early the next morning, Kathy had trouble breathing. She was taken to University Memorial Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. Kathy died in the emergency room. Her autopsy revealed that she died of a pulmonary embolism.

An Unknown Perp in Oklahoma, 1958

Shortly after 1:00 in the morning on September 18, 1958, Frank Tarbet of Norman, Oklahoma, was awakened by a knock on the door. Outside he found "Bettina," the 12-year-old daughter of his neighbor, 31-year old "Glenda Coe" (named changed at request of family). The little girl said that her mother was "very cold." Tarbet went with Bettina to Glenda's bedroom, where he found her dead on her bed, dressed in street clothes except for shoes. Tabet notified the police at 1:18 a.m.

The police questioned Bettina, who said that at around 8:00 the previous evening she and her four younger sisters had gotten ready for bed. At around 8:30 Glenda had taken off her shoes and laid down on her bed. The girls retired for the night. Bettina woke at around 1:00 and been unable to awaken her mother.

Tabet told police that he had seen a pickup truck leave Glenda's house at around 10:45 the previous evening. His daughter told police that she'd seen the pickup at around midnight, and somebody had carried a woman from the truck into the Coe home. Glenda's first husband, plumber James P. Morton, was picked up by the police and brought to the station at around 2:40 a.m. He owned a pickup truck matching the description of the truck the neighbors had seen at Glenda's house. The couple had been divorced for about a year. Glenda and her second husband, "Oscar Coe," had been married for about eight months but he and Glenda has separated and she had filed for divorce in July. Oscar was quickly dismissed by the police as not involved in Glenda's death.

There were no obvious signs of foul play. At first, authorities suspected either natural death or a suicide. However, Glenda's neck was slightly swollen and discolored and all evidence indicated that Glenda, a former waitress, had been in good health before her death. X-rays found no injuries. An autopsy found that Glenda had died due to air bubbles in her bloodstream, and that she had been pregnant at the time of her death. A more careful examination determined that Glenda had died from an abortion attempt.

Morton was held for murder by the police but I have been unable to determine if or how the case proceeded. (See newly added sources, below.)

    A Doctor in Tacoma, 1929

Sometime most likely in September of 1929, physician and surgeon H. W. Coulter performed an abortion upon 21-year-old Gene Raligh, leading to her death in Tacoma, Washington on September 18 from septicemia.

Gene's survivors alleged that not only did Coulter injure her, but he also failed to treat her infection and instead concealed the extent of her illness and injury, preventing her from getting medical care that might have saved her life.

Census records still show Coulter living at home with his wife in 1930, so if he was prosecuted he was not convicted.

Nurse Cathy Litchtig performed an ultrasound, "even though there was no physician order for the study. She interpreted the study as showing a five week pregnancy and signed [Hodari's] name..." Dr. Milton Nathanson initialed  the ultrasound to confirm Lichtig's finding.

CRNA Barry Thompson did the anesthesia while Nathanson did the abortion. Regina was given 200 mg of Diprivan, 2 mg Fentanyl, .2mg Gylcopyrrolate, and Droperidol to anesthetize her for the abortion, which was charted as taking place from 9:55 to 10:05 a.m.

    An Understaffed, Underequipped Recovery Room

    Delay in Calling EMS

    The Findings

MSM not ignoring Hodari story, forced abortion lawsuit

Mainstream media fairly investigates accusation of forced abortion

NBC TV 25 in Flint, MI, ran a remarkable 2-part, back-to-back exposé on May 24 fairly detailing the merits of a lawsuit filed against late-term abortionist Alberto Hodari by former patient Caitlin Bruce, a story we've been following for some time.

In Part I, note how the story opens with an interesting turn on words, that Hodari "violated [Bruce's] right to choice" - by forcibly aborting her. Also note, as Citizen for a Pro-Life Society's Monica Miller wrote in an email, "The child is never called a "fetus"!

Jill notes that Hodari has pulled a Polanski in that he's conveniently out of the country when he's in deep doo-doo. But he did talk to the news people over the phone. His excuses sound pretty lame to me, though I'm sure OC is pumping his fist and shouting, "Preach it, brother!"

For example, in this next news clip Hodari tries to claim his now infamous "license to lie" quip made during his 2007 Wayne State University speech was only about life or death situations: "Never tell a patient, especially a woman, you're going to die. And in that respect, yes, we lie," he told the reporter.

So many things wrong with that, where to start?

First, the sexism: "especially a woman"? Excuse me? And that coming from an ob/gyn? 2nd, just how much experience does Hodari have treating dying patients? 3rd, as a matter of fact, medical professionals are typically not supposed to lie to dying patients about their status, particularly if they are asking.

4th, the original context of Hodari's "license to lie" statement indicates it had nothing to do with dying patients: "My wife says we doctors have a license to lie [audience laughs], and it's true, it's absolutely true. Sometimes you need to lie to a patient about things they want to do or no, much less now than in the past."

Jill closes with an excerpt of an email she got from a woman who reports a similar experience at Hodari's hand -- changing her mind and being held down and forcibly aborted anyway. These stories aren't unique. I have a page of tales of unwanted abortions, including:

  • Being Pro-Life Will Not Protect You From Abortion...: Suzanne tells how a doctor misinterpreted her sickness and scars, and induced an abortion on her when she was too weak and drugged up to resist.

  • Abortion Whether You Want it or Not: Roe vs. Wade has certainly made it easy to get an abortion. As these women discovered, you don't even have to know that you're pregnant.

  • : Expectant mother who screamed 'stop' will petition Supreme Court

The news coverage also ignores Hodari's background, including the deaths of Tamiia Russell and Chivon Williams, as well as his membership in the National Abortion Federation.

From 1929 to 2003, Fatal Abortions

    A Doctor in Tacoma, 1929

Sometime most likely in September of 1929, physician and surgeon H. W. Coulter performed an abortion upon 21-year-old Gene Raligh, leading to her death in Tacoma, Washington on September 18 from septicemia.

Gene's survivors alleged that not only did Coulter injure her, but he also failed to treat her infection and instead concealed the extent of her illness and injury, preventing her from getting medical care that might have saved her life.

An Unknown Perp in Oklahoma, 1958

At around 8:00 on the evening of September 17, 1958, 31-year-old "Glenda Coe" (named changed at request of family) and her four daughters got ready for bed. The girls retired for the night. The eldest girl, 12 years old, awoke at around 1:00 on the morning of September 18, 1958, and went to the master bedroom to find her mother dead. Before her death, Glenda had changed out of her nightclothes and into street clothes.

At first, authorities suspected either natural death or a suicide. However, all evidence indicated that Glenda, a waitress, had been in good health before her death. An autopsy found that Glenda had died due to air bubbles in her bloodstream, and that she had been pregnant at the time of her death. A more careful examination determined that Glenda had died from an abortion attempt.

Glenda and her ex-husband, 34-year-old James Paul Morton, had been divorced for several years. James was arrested for questioning. Witnesses said they had seen him at Glenda's home the night before her death. He was released after four days, though authorities declined to tell the press if he had been cleared or not.

    40 Years, 40 Faces of Choice (2003 - 2012)

    2003: Holly Patterson

Holly Patterson, age 18, died September 17, 2003, from sepsis caused by a fetus incompletely expelled in a safe and legal medical abortion. Holly got the drugs for the fatal abortion at a Planned Parenthood in Hayward, California, on September 10. Monty Patterson, Holly‘s father, became an anti-RU-486 activist. He told the San Francisco Chronicle, "The medical community treats this as a simple pill you take, as if you're getting rid of a headache. The procedure, the follow-ups, it's all too lackadaisical. The girl gets a pill. Then she's sent home to do the rest on her own. There are just too many things that can go wrong."For an extensive, in-depth look at Holly's death and the surrounding political firestorm, see: The Making of a Martyr, Holly Patterson‘s death.Other women were identified as dying after RU-486 abortions include: Chanelle Bryant, Oriane Shevin,  Vivian Tran, Cherish Roe, Tara Roe, Wanda Roe, and Brenda Vise.

    2004: Abraham Alberto Hodari

Dr. Abraham Alberto Hodari worked at Northland Family Planning Clinic, a National Abortion Federation member in Michigan. He also worked at Womancare Clinic and Detroit Memorial Hospital. On January 7, 2004, Hodari initiated an abortion on 15-year-old Tamiia Russell, who was so far advanced in pregnancy that another abortion clinic had offered her prenatal vitamins. Tamiia was brought for the abortion by her abuser's sister, using a fake ID, and in violation of parental consent laws. After the abortion was begun by inserting laminaria, dried seaweed sticks that absorb moisture and expand overnight to dilate the cervix, Tamiia's mother got wind of the abortion, which Tamiia hadn't wanted. They went to the clinic and asked that the laminaria be removed, but Hodari, who once told Medical Students for Choice that abortion doctors have a "license to lie," availed himself of that license and told them that she'd die if they halted the abortion, Hodari completed the abortion and sent Tamiia home to bleed to death. Hodari also perpetrated a fatal abortion on and Chivon Williams, and was implicated in the abortion death of Regina Johnson.

    2005: Christin Gilbert

Christin Gilbert, a 19-year-old woman with Down syndrome, was brought from Texas to George Tiller's Wichita abortion facility for a presumably safe and legal late abortion on January 10, 2005. Like all Tiller late abortion patients, ostensibly so sick that their pregnancies endanger their lives or health, Christin spent the bulk of her time during the abortion process at a motel, in the care of her family. She would be brought back to Tiller's facility each day for procedures to kill the fetus and dilate her cervix, then returned to the motel and the care of her family. On January 12, Tiller's staff diagnosed Christin as being "dehydrated". She was given IV fluids then sent back to the motel. She had numerous episodes of vomiting, and lost consciousness several times. Rather than call an ambulance or take her to the hospital, Christin's family waited until morning and took her to Tiller's clinic, where she went into cardiac arrest. Tiller's staff gave false information to 911, telling them that Christin was awake and alert even as Dr. LeRoy Carhart was attempting to resuscitate her. When medics arrived, they mistook Carhart for a bystander because of how unprofessionally he was administering CPR.Ambulance staff resuscitated Christin, then transported her to the hospital. She was pumped full of antibiotics to try to treat the underlying sepsis that evidently had caused the cardiac arrest, but to no avail. She died that day of systemic organ failure.

    2006: Romeo Ferrer

Like many abortion "clinics", Dr. Romeo Ferrer's private practice, Gynecare Center, would look to the untrained eye like an outpatient clinic. A patient making an appointment there would likely believe she was in a licensed clinic, not a doctor's office. In 2006, 21-year-old "Peggy"  went to Ferrer's clinic-looking office for an abortion on February 3, 2006. Ferrer started the abortion, a D&E abortion, at about 1:00 p.m., using ultrasound to help him visualize the baby as he dismembered it. It took 45 minutes and repeated doses of drugs to complete what is typically an abortion that takes less than 20 minutes. After being moved to recovery, Peggy turned a bluish color, and staff were unable to detect pulse or blood pressure. Ferrer used lay rather than professional CPR techniques. Medics arrived to find Peggy still unresponsive and without a pulse. The medics used an oxygen mask and additional drugs as they transported Peggy to Anne Arundel Medical Center. There, emergency room staff continued the attempts to resuscitate Peggy, to no avail. She was pronounced dead at 2:57 p.m. An autopsy found that Peggy had been overdosed with Demerol. The medical board found that  Ferrer had given Peggy too much medication too quickly, causing her to stop breathing, and failed to monitor her closely enough to notice in a timely manner. He then failed to adequately resuscitate her. They suspended his license. They had learned of the incident when Peggy's family sued.

    2007: Rapin Osathanondh

Laura Hope Smith was accompanied by a friend for an abortion to be performed by Rapin Osathanondh on September 13, 2007. By the end of the day, she was dead. Her grief-stricken and bewildered parents began a campaign to find out how their daughter had died. Once they learned the truth, they fought to get her abortionist prosecuted in her death. A medical board investigation found that Osathanondh had placed Laura under sedation without any means to monitor her heart rate, blood pressure, or the oxygen level of her blood. He had no qualified person assisting him while Smith was under anesthesia. The only other person in the room was an office worker who had no training in CPR or other life-saving procedures. After Laura stopped breathing, Osathanondh delayed calling 911. Once Osathanondh found out he was being investigated, he hired a CPR instructor to train him and his staff and to back-date the documents to make it appear that they'd been trained prior to Laura's abortion. He also rushed out and bought appropriate resuscitation equipment to try to fool investigators into believing that the facility had been properly equipped the day of Laura's abortion. Charged with manslaughter in Laura's death, Osathanondh plead out and got a six month sentence in a minimum security prison.

    2008: Barack Obama

During the 2008 Presidential campaign, much was made of then-Illinois Senator Barack Obama's repeated choice to vote against the Born Alive Infants Protection Act. Obama stated that he objected to requiring a second doctor to assess a baby that survived an abortion would "burden" decisions by women and doctors to go ahead with abortions. In retrospect, the decision was probably a very canny political move. It garnered unbridled and enthusiastic support from the abortion lobby, since he'd earned his credentials by supporting even their most extreme position of allowing abortion survivors to die on the grounds that by agreeing to do an abortion the doctor has legally placed the baby in the category of "non-viable" regardless of the child's actual health or gestational age. But the vote also served to discredit his opponents. Anybody pointing out that Obama had opposed something as basic as providing care to a tiny newborn would be accused of lying, on the grounds that nobody could truly be so heartless as to vote in favor of wrapping a gasping baby in a towel and leaving it in a closet to die. Thus, those who simply pointed out the truth could be painted as bald-faced liars, effectively neutralizing any criticism they made of him in the future. It was, in short, a brilliant move.

    2009: Abby Johnson

In 2009, after seeing a 13-week abortion on ultrasound as she was assisting, Planned Parenthood clinic manager Abby Johnson became revolted by her work. She reached out to the prolifers who had been praying outside her facility, and became a staunch life advocate. She wrote a book, Unplanned, about her experience. She is now an outspoken opponent of Planned Parenthood. She has established a project, And Then There Were None, to provide outreach to abortion employees, providing them with emotional support and transitional money as they seek new jobs. The goal is not merely to give hope and better lives to former abortion workers, but also to cause the abortion industry to collapse from within as they find that nobody wants to devote their lives to a practice that purports to help women by killing their children.

    2010: Alexandra Nunez

Alexandra Nunez, age 37, died after an abortion performed at A1 Medicine in Jackson Heights, Queens. Operation Rescue describes the facility as "located in a run-down building in a predominately Hispanic neighborhood," and was operated by Salomon Epstein. The abortion was performed at 3:30 p.m. on January 25, 2010. Alexandra began bleeding heavily and was transported by ambulance to Elmhurst Hospital Center, where she died. The source of the fatal bleeding was traced to a severed artery. An employee at A1 insisted that all had gone well at their facility. "The patient was transferred to the hospital, she didn't die at the clinic. Nothing happened here." Nothing happened. Except that a woman was fatally injured. It's like the thank you note that Steve Lichtenberg sent for the referral after Deanna Bell's death: "Uneventful D&E". A dead patient. "Uneventful." "Nothing happened."

    2011: Kermit Gosnell

A bombshell Grand Jury report was released in 2011. It all had begun on February 18, 2010, when the FBI and Philadelphia detective executed search warrants at the Women’s Medical Society, a clinic operated by Dr. Kermit Barron Gosnell, after an investigation into reports of  illegal prescription drug activity. When the team members entered the clinic, they were appalled, describing it to the Grand Jury as “filthy,” “deplorable,”  and “by far, the worst” that these experienced investigators had ever encountered. There was blood on the floor. A stench of urine filled the air. A flea-infested cat was wandering through the facility, and there were cat feces on the stairs. Semi-conscious women were moaning in the waiting room or the recovery room, where they sat on dirty recliners covered with blood-stained blankets. All the women had been sedated by unlicensed staff – long before Gosnell arrived at the clinic. One FBI agent described the procedure rooms as resembling “a bad gas station restroom." The search team discovered fetal remains haphazardly stored throughout the clinic – in bags, milk jugs, orange juice cartons, and even in cat-food containers. Two patients had been drugged to death by the unlicensed staff. Viable infants were being born alive and then killed by severing their spinal cords with surgical scissors. Most shocking of all was that the state had been notified multiple times of how bad things were, but because of a political devotion to abortion rights, officials had deliberately looked the other way. Gosnell is now in jail pending trial on capital murder charges for the deaths of Karnamaya Mongar and some of the murdered infants.

    2012: Tonya Reaves

Tonya Reaves, age 24, was rushed to Northwest Memorial Hospital in Chicago and pronounced dead at 11:20 p.m. on Friday, July 21, 2012. She was taken there from the Planned Parenthood facility at 18 S. Michigan Avenue. Tonya had undergone a D&E abortion,  performed at 11:00 a.m., but she remained at the facility for hours until finally an ambulance was called, taking her to the hospital at 4:30 p.m. The Planned Parenthood doctor performed a second D&E procedure there, then emergency surgery, to no avail. Tonya bled to death, pronounced dead at 11:20 p.m. The Centers for Disease Control published back in 1983, "Deaths from hemorrhage associated with legal induced abortion should not occur." In every hemorrhage death they investigated, "Lack of adequate postoperative monitoring or treatment of hemorrhagic shock" was a factor. The CDC's article noted, "Deaths from hemorrhage can be eliminated by preventing uterine trauma during abortion and by rapidly diagnosing and treating hemorrhage if it occurs." Planned Parenthood, for some reason, failed to prevent the uterine trauma and failed to rapidly diagnose and treat Tonya's hemorrhage. The abortion giant has a lot of explaining to do.

    Trouble in Hodariland

Hodari’s Troubles Mount As Patient Sues For Needless Abortion

Marcia Lanqua, age 33, had already been sent away by another abortion facility when their ultrasound couldn't find any sign of a uterine pregnancy. So she went to Alberto Hodari's Womancare of Southfield. Hodari performed an abortion -- failing, as did the first facility, to diagnose the ectopic pregnancy. Such a mistake can be fatal for the woman, and is considered inexcusable among abortion practitioners. A mock jury of National Abortion Federation members unanimously agreed on this in a mock malpractice trial based on a failure to diagnose an ectopic.

Interestingly, Hodari is no longer on the National Abortion Federation web site as a member, though he was in 2008 -- after Hodari had killed three patients.

    Clearly Illegal vs. Clandestinely Illegal

Today we have two deaths from the Cemetery of Choice: a mysterious illegal abortion death and a technically illegal legal abortion death.

On January 8, 1918, 20-year-old newlywed and homemaker Margaret Balch died in a Chicago home from hemorrhage caused by an abortion perpetrated by a person who was never identified.

Fast forward to the days of presumably safe legal abortion.

    Tamiia Russell
Taisha Glenn, the sister of 15-year-old Tamiia Russell's 24-year-old "boyfriend", Stacy Glenn, arranged for an abortion on January 7, 2004 without notifying Tamiia's family. Glenn, according to Frances Russell, Tamiia's mother, is a reputed drug dealer who has not been located since Tamiia's death. He paid $2000 for the abortion. Tamiia was at least six months pregnant.

Taisha took tamiia to five different Detroit area abortion facilities, and was turned away from all five because of how far advanced Tamiia's pregnancy was. One facility reportedly even offered prenatal care and vitamins.

    Abraham Alberto Hodari
Finally Taisha found an abortionist willing to proceed -- WomanCare, a Winthorop Village abortion facility run by abortionist Abraham Alberto Hodari. Despite the fact that the pregnancy was the result of statutory rape, and despite the fact that he had no permission from Tamiia's parents or guardian, as required by Michigan law, the clinic agreed to take the case. Tamiia used an identification card with another woman's picture to claim that she was 19, but according to Tamiia's cousin, the woman in the picture ID looked nothing like Tamiia. Thus, Tamiia's abortion was actually illegal.

Tamiia's abortion was begun on January 7, when laminaria was inserted. Laminaria are sticks of seaweed used to dilate the cervix. Once home, Tamiia confessed to her aunt and mother that she was pregnant and she had begun an abortion. Mrs. Russell said that she called the clinic, and staff told her that the abortion must be carried out once the laminaria are inserted. This is not true; laminaria can be removed and the pregnancy continued with medical supervision. In fact, many crisis pregnancy centers offer laminaria removal for women who have changed their minds after beginning an abortion procedure. The lie isn't surprising coming from a clinic run by Alberto Hodari, who told a group of Medical Students for Choice that he has "a license to lie" in order to get patients to do what he thinks is good for them.

Based on the false claim that Tamiia had no choice but to go through with the abortion, her mother drove her to WomanCare on January 8 for the actual abortion procedure. Tamiia bled heavily after coming home from the abortion -- so heavily that the blood soaked a mattress. Her mother called WomanCare, where staff told her that such bleeding was normal and instructed them not to bring Tamiia to a hospital. Mrs. Russell ignored this advice and called an ambulance, which rushed the girl to Sinai-Grace Hospital, where she was dead on arrival.

Dr. Leigh Hlavaty, who performed the autopsy on Tamiia, told a local pro-life activist who contacted LifeSiteNews.com that the girl's death was caused by "uterine infarction with sepsis due to status second trimester [sic] abortion."

Because Tamiia resided in Wayne County, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has jurisdiction over the statutory rape case. However, as the family apparently did not know Russell was pregnant until the day before she died, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said that there may not be a case -- the parents or guardians must make the complaint, and once the minor is dead, the complaint of statutory rape cannot be filed.

Dr. Miller, director of Citizens for a Pro-life Society, reports that there have been 23 lawsuits in the past 20 years against WomanCare facilities and Alberto Hodari, for abortion injuries including complications resulting on hysterectomies on 19, 22, and 23-year-old women. All were dismissed, with many referring to undisclosed settlements.  Hodari was also implicated in the deaths of Chivon Williams and Regina Johnson.

At the time of Tamiia's death, Womancare was a member of the National Abortion Federation.

Now there's a role model for you!

"Medical Students for Choice (sic)" have invited Alberto Hodari to speak at Wayne State University.

As Jill Stanek pointed out, it's unlikely any of those admiring students attending the seminar will ask exactly why Hodari was okay with performing an illegal third-trimester abortion on Tamia Russell, a 15-year-old sexual abuse victim who died under this man's tender ministrations.

These admiring students are also unlikely to question Hodari (pictured) about the death of Chivon Williams under his care. They'll likely not question him about the nearly two-dozen lawsuits against him and his facility, such as the woman who had to be hospitalized and needed surgery after Hodari misdiagnosed how far along her pregnancy was and sent her home with retained placenta. They'll not ask about the woman whose pregnancy he failed to verify before proceeding with an abortion procedure carried out to kill a fetus that wasn't there -- puncturing the woman's uterus and leaving her with permanent damage. They'll not ask about the woman whose internal organs he slashed up so badly that she needed a hysterectomy.

He does abortions. That tells these gullible kids everything they think they need to know about this man. In case you're searching for your names on-line kids -- Kia Jones, Jonathan Oakes, Katie O'Connell, and Cynthia Velting-Kidder -- read this, read the links, and re-consider if this guy is really who you want to be when you grow up.

And consider this: Even after all he's done, he's still good enough for the National Abortion Federation, the abortionists' guild you're all hoping one day to be good enough to join. Well, there's good news on that front, kids -- you don't have to be good. You just have to be willing to do abortions and pay your dues. They'll plug you as if you could do no wrong. No matter how bad you are, NAF will assure abortion-minded women that you're an excellent doctor who adheres to the highest standards of care. No matter how many women you maim and kill.
