Anniversary: "I knew I screwed up."

On December 8, 1994, 23-year-old Magdalena Rodriguez went to Suresh Gandotra's clinic, El Norte Clinica Medica, for what she thought was a second-trimester abortion. Gandotra later said, "I knew I screwed up," when he pulled out bowel instead of fetal parts.

Gandotra called a hospital and asked for directions to send Magdalena there by car. The staff at the hospital insisted that Magdalena should be transported by ambulance. They began to assemble an expert team for the expected catastrophic injuries.

In the mean time, Gandotra left Magdalena unattended while he did abortions on other patients. After a half-hour delay, he finally called an ambulance, but did not inform them about the hospital that was awaiting her arrival with a team ready to treat her.

When the ambulance crew arrived, they found Magdalena in ventricular fibrillation, with no pulse, bleeding, and on the floor. Since they'd not been told there was a hospital awaiting her with a team of surgeons ready, they took Magdalena to another hospital, one that was not prepared to treat a patient with her specific injuries.

Gandotra sent Magdalena to the hospital without a medical history or any information about her condition or what he'd done to her. The staff were totally unprepared for what they found when they examined her. Magdalena had no vitals on arrival at hospital. She was unresponsive with fixed, dilated pupils.

When the surgeon at the hospital opened Magdalena's peritoneum, it was so distended that the operating room was spattered with the escaping blood. Magdalena's uterus was ruptured, with a fetal limb protruding into her abdomen. Her cervix, uterus, bladder, and colon were lacerated. The mangled and partially dismembered fetus was of approximately 30 weeks gestation. As the autopsy describes it, "the body of the baby was not complete when autopsied. Both arms had been cut off; the heart, lungs, liver, and other organs had been cut out, the front of the chest and abdomen were missing, the right femur was fractured, the head was intact except for an area on the scalp which had been taken off from the back of the head."

Magdalena bled to death during surgery. Her death was attributed to "complications of the acute pelvic injuries which consisted of lacerations of the lower uterus, vagina, bladder and colon."

Gandotra told the medical board that he had delayed calling an ambulance because he had no admitting privileges and that Magdalena had asked to be released so she could walk home. In a seriously injured patient, this is a sign of hemorrhagic shock, which a physician should have recognized.

Gandotra's attorney said, "We don't believe this was blow the standard of care nor do we believe it was malpractice." A nurse at the hospital that tried to save Magdalena's life said, "I've never seen anything like this before and I don't want to again."

Search: Gloria Aponte

Twenty-year-old Gloria Aponte went to National Abortion Federation member Hanan Rotem in Stamford, Connecticut, for an abortion on April 19, 1986. A few hours after the abortion, Gloria was declared dead from hemorrhage at a nearby hospital. Rotem claimed that Gloria had died from an amniotic fluid embolism. An investigation by health officials found that Rotem had failed to perform necessary blood tests, and had permitted a receptionist with no medical training to administer anesthesia.

Rotem, by the way, also worked at Eastern Women's Center, the NAF facility where Dawn Mack, Dawn Ravenelle, and Venus Ortiz underwent their fatal abortions. There, Rotem performed an abortion on Angela H. on January 22, 1982. Angela sued, claiming an incomplete abortion and perforated uterus requiring corrective surgery and leaving her with scarring and subsequent recurrent urinary tract infections. A jury found that Rotem failed to arrange appropriate follow-up, that Angela was not adequately advised of the risks prior to her abortion, and that a reasonable person would not have consented to the surgery had she been adequately informed of the risks. Atlanta Surgi Center

Somebody was searching for "Surgi Center Atlanta Shutting Down". As far as I know, Antlanta Surgi-Center is not shutting down. Alas.

Check out their web site:
Celebrating 30 years of compassionate, reliable, and trustworthy medical services for women. Atlanta SurgiCenter has been performing abortions, providing gynecological care and educational services since 1973. .... Atlanta SurgiCenter complies fully with the standards of safety and professional care set by the National Abortion Federation.

Oh, yeah, they're members of the National Abortion Federation. Though what this says about them or about NAF is pretty debatable.

Catherine Pierce underwent an abortion at Atlanta Surgi-Center on March 11, 1989, performed by Daniel McBrayer. Catherine went into cardiac arrest while left unattended in the recovery room. State officials alleged "serious problems" after Peirce was injured. They cited the facility for administering "the same anesthesia dosages" to patients whose weights ranges from 107 to 167 pounds, inadequate record keeping, and inadequate supervision of patients. (Atlanta Constitution 5-12-89, AP 5-12-89)

State investigators indicated that they'd been turned away the first time they'd tried to inspect the facility, and were forced to stage a raid in order to obtain the records needed to investigate the mishap that later killed Catherine. The clinic complained that they'd only turned the state investigators away because they'd failed to display badges and a subpoena. They also complained to the press that the raid was "political harassment" due to the fact that an anti-abortion activist had complained to the state about the facility.

Catherine, meanwhile, was hospitalized, then transferred to a nursing home, where she died on October 10, leaving an 11-year-old girl motherless

Among the patient care problems cited, the investigators also said that they found discrepancies between the number of fetuses sent to the disposal lab and the number of abortions performed. In 1989 Atlanta Surgi-Center had logged 1,748 abortions, but had only sent 155 fetuses for disposal. In 1988 they had logged 2,774 abortions, but only sent 155 fetuses for disposal. In 1987 they logged 1,104 abortions but only sent 306 fetuses for disposal. The investigation into fetus disposal was prompted by local prolifers reporting that they had seen hundreds of fetuses in the clinic's dumpsters. Dr. Gay, the clinic director, denied the allegations. (AP 9-20-89, 9-22-89; Atlanta Constitution 9-21-89)

Atlanta Surgi-Center also operated at "Northside Women's Clinic", so it well might be the "Atlanta Northside" facility where Geneva Calton's fatal abortion was performed.

  • Wanda S. sued San Vicente Hospital after her abortion (scroll down): The abortion was performed by Christopher Dotson November 28, 1973. The pre-op exam showed a normal size uterus despite a patient history suggesting a 10 week pregnancy. The pathologist failed to notify Dotson of a lack of chorionic villi in the specimen. Wanda was re-admitted to San Vicente for emergency surgery on December 11: "At the time of injury I awoke with the sensation of excruciating pain. The pain seemed like an explosion in my body. There was an extreme loss of blood. I had to drag myself to the door for help. Then it became much more severe, with a hard, sharp stabbing feeling. This pain caused me to lose consciousness every few minutes. .... I suffered extreme mental anguish when the medical personnel at the hospital said I was dying." Wanda also described the aftereffects: "Some times I have hard, sharp pains in my sides and vaginal tract a few days before my monthly period. Also, I have a noticeable scar at the pit of my stomach and that protrudes forward so as it can be seen under my clothing. The scar still has an itching sensation. At times there is pain in and around the incision." (LA County Superior Court Case No. C91104)

  • These women ended up with amputations as a result of their abortions, ranging from the loss of fingers to the loss of limbs.

  • The family of 13-year-old Cynthia sued The Facility Formerly Known as Prince after her abortion (scroll down): On April 28 or 30, 1973, Cynthia sought pregnancy counseling at Inglewood. The defendants "recommended that her said pregnancy be terminated and that they be authorized to perform the recommended abortion." Cynthia's abortion was performed by none other than Leo Kenneally. John Dupont indicated he was summoned by Morton Barke to assess Cynthia after Kenneally had finished the abortion. He "found she was grossly jaundiced and was suffering from a severe infection," and he had her transferred to Cedars of Lebanon Hospital. Upon admission Cynthia was "very jaundiced." She suffered post abortal clostridia sepsis, diffuse intravascular coagulation, and acute tubular necrosis. "Some necrotic material was found in the uterus, draining of the cul-de-sac revealed pus, and the uterus was found to be quite involved by a suppurative process as were the tubes and ovaries. The plaintiff also suffered acute renal failure." The suit also noted that Cynthia "has suffered severe emotional, nervous, mental and psychological shock resulting from the complete abdominal hysterectomy, and demonstrated by prolonged periods of depression and lethargy." Cynthia was further treated at a hospital April 30 - May 22. The suit also noted the "possibility of future kidney and liver complications." Cynthia must take medications for remainder of her life, and suffered scars on her abdomen and arms. (LA County Superior Court Case No. SWC30375)

  • Rosa Naperstek-Taft, a Chicago-area attorney, was very politically active in championing legal abortion. She and her friends had actually celebrated the night before her abortion, because she was the first among them to have one of the new safe-n-legal abortions instead of the old-fashioned illegal kind. She certainly got to reap what she'd sown. Rosa said that she screamed in pain during the abortion, and a staffer responded by stuffing a tampon in her mouth. The abortion was so badly botched that Rosa lost all her reproductive organs and her spleen. She had to undergo a colostomy and tracheotomy, and suffered damage to her heart, lungs, kidneys, and vocal cords. She was hospitalized for eight months, with three of those months spent in intensive care. After her injuries were repaired, Rosa had to undergo intensive therapy to learn to walk and talk again. Rosa said, "I don't have my normal body. My abdomen looks like a sky map of the Grand Canyon. ... My voice is totally changed, and I have a lot of psychological scars that will be with me forever." (Chicago Sun-Times 11-15-78; Wayne County Circuit Court Case No. 73 250 920 CM)

  • Diana S. filed suit after her abortion, performed by Dr. Rebecca Stanley on May 20, 1989. Diana was in great pain and was bleeding heavily. Dr. Stanley repeated the procedure with ovum extractors. By the end of the second procedure, Dr. Stanley "knew ... she had perforated the uterus." In spite of this injury, Dr. Stanley sent Diana home with her husband, telling them that the abortion had been successful and without complications. To make a long story short, Dianna ended up in the hospital. Dr. Stanley had ripped a 4-cm tear into the back of Diana's uterus and shoved the head and chest of the fetus through the tear into Diana's abdomin. Dr. Stanley had also torn away the tissue covering Diana's sacral bone. Stanley had also managed to tear out about 10 cm of Diana's right ureter, clear up to the bottom of her kidney. Doctors had to implant tubes through Diana's abdominal wall to drain her kidneys directly. As of the time the documents were filed, it was still unclear whether or not doctors would be able to salvage Diana's damaged kidney. In order to prevent any future pregnancies, which would be life-threatening due to the extreme damage done to Diana's uterus, Diana had to have a hysterectomy. She was left with a 1-inch-wide scar running from her sternum to her pubic bone. (LA County Superior Court Case No. KC000309, Medical Board Case No. D-4249)

It's not always the mothers that end up with the scarring:

  • Abortion provider Enrique Gerbi performed an abortion on Ruth Ann S. October 3, 1984. Saline was injected into Ruth Ann's uterus to kill the fetus. At 12:30 AM on October 4, Ruth Ann delivered a live infant girl, that she named Vanessa. Vanessa suffered brain damage, required heart surgery due to saline damage, and required surgery "to relieve hydrocephalic conditions produced by the result of the salt injection." The baby suffered blindness, mental retardation, severe scarring and burning of her feet, growth retardation, and "Lack of coordination, ambulation and other dysfunctions not yet manifest." (Wayne County Circuit Court Case No. 85-529757)

  • Baby Claire had her arm ripped off in an abortion attempt.

  • Gianna Jessen has cerebral palsy and surgical scars thanks to damage she suffered during a saline abortion intended to kill her.

  • Ana Rosa Rodriguez had her arm ripped off by a provider of vital reproductive health care services, who was trying to kill her. (The abortionist, Abu Hayat, was a member of the National Abortion Federation, and he had also performed the fatal abortion on Sophie McCoy.)

  • Blame where blame is due

Operation Rescue and many of its visitors have their panties in a twist because of Kim, the staffer who called 911 when Laura Smith stopped breathing during her abortion.

The title of the post, "911 Call Reveals Cold-Hearted Attitude Toward MA Woman’s Abortion Death", is itself needlessly judgmental. Then OR says:

Audio files and transcripts obtained by Operation Rescue of a 911 call and subsequent communications between emergency responders reveals a cold-hearted dispassion concerning the death of a Massachusetts woman during an abortion in September.

Records show that a woman named Kim, who was an employee of “Women’s Health Center,” an abortion office owned and operated by Rapin Osathanondh, made a 911 call to the Hyannis Fire Department on September 13 requesting medical assistance for a woman who had aspirated and was not breathing. ....

“I’ve heard people order pizza with more emotion than that clinic worker had when calling help for Laura,” said Operation Rescue spokesperson Cheryl Sullenger.

The folks leaving comments are even worse:

I would think if someone was lying dead in the next room, I might reflect a little more anxiety in my voice than this woman, Kim. It almost sounded like she was bored with the question when he asked her phone number.

    and

Since Kim works for an abortionist, she sees death on a daily basis…no big deal to her. Anyone who works for an abortionist has to be very cold.

    and

Just another example of “business as usual” at an abortion clinic.
The lack of emotion/concern in Kims voice is most likely due to training she received that stresses NO URGENCY when summoning help for a “botch victim”. After all, we don’t want any attention being drawn to a clinic where they don’t have the resources or the staff to handle an emergency.

We can have no idea what was going on in Kim's heart or head. Maybe she was indeed cold and callous. But there are three other far more likely explanations for her "improper" emotion during the 911 call:

    1. Kim was being as professional as she knew how to be. Medical personnel and people who work in medical settings are (at least supposed to be) trained on how to handle emergencies, and one thing they train you to do is to stay calm and cool and very task-oriented. (Stephen King said that when he was being loaded up after the van hit him, he'd asked the medic, "Am I going to die?" The medic had blandly reassured him, "Not today." King said the medic later told him that he didn't expect King to survive the ride to the hospital.) The idea is that you just do Step A, then Step B, then step C, very placidly and methodically, and you can always go home and come unglued later. The last thing you want in an emergency is hysterical, highly emotional staff. You want them as brusque and matter-of-fact as nuns supervising a canned food drive.

    2. She could have been so shocked and stunned that she shut down emotionally. Sort of "This can't be happening. We can't be having a patient die! It's all gonna be okay!" Some people respond to a horrible, shocking thing with denial and disbelief as a coping mechanism. Kim could well be one of them.

    3. Whoever it was that had told her to call 911 had lied to her, reassuring her that Laura could be easily resuscitated, that the ambulance was just a precautionary measure, that everything was going to be just fine. Back when Gwen Yarbour died at Lovejoy Surgicenter, the prolifers who routinely picketted the place knew about the death before the staff did. One of the prolifers had followed the ambulance to the hospital and stayed to find out if the woman was okay or not. The staff, on the other hand, had been sent home before the ambulance was called, and the next day they were told by the supervisors that Gwen had fully recovered and had gone home. They wouldn't believe the prolifers when they were first told no, Gwen had died. Kim might have made the understandable mistake of trusting her supervisor or the doctor, who she figured had more knowledge than she did.

This said, I can fault somebody -- perhaps Kim, perhaps the people who trained her -- for not giving the proper set of information when calling 911. The dispatcher should have been given the patient's age, whether or not the patient still had a pulse, and what interventions if any were being given. Was the patient intubated? Being bagged with O2? Being given CPR? But, that said, the information was evidently quite enough to dispatch proper help, as OR notes:

“In contrast, it appears that the emergency workers did all they could for Laura. The amount of units that responded, and the call to the Captain indicated that they took the situation very seriously.”

We can not know what went on in Kim's heart or head unless we ask her. And even then, we can't fully know. Only Kim and God know that. Let's stick to judging the behaviors, which is right and appropriate, and leave it to God to judge whether Kim's emotions at the time were "appropriate".

    Antichoice prochoicers win another round

Pro-Life Crisis Pregnancy Centre Bullied out of Fundraiser by Vicious Abortion Crusaders
Ottawa's First Place Pregnancy Centre has told the charitable foundation of the Ottawa Senators hockey team that it will be pulling out of a fundraising scheme because of negative publicity after attacks in the press on its pro-life position. The Ottawa Citizen reports that First Place told the foundation it would be pulling out of the fundraising drive after being called "anti-choice" by Planned Parenthood in a press release and "sinister" by CBC columnist Heather Mallick.

First Place was to be among three charities in Ottawa to receive the proceeds of a Christmas tree raffle organised by a group of Senators' wives and girlfriends called the Better Halves. Terri Mazik, executive director of First Place, told the Ottawa Citizen they withdrew for fear of tarnishing the foundation's positive image.

She said, "We felt, under the circumstances, they were doing a wonderful thing by including us and they did not deserve to be receiving the negative press."

First Place does make it clear on their web site that they do not perpetrate or refer for abortions:

  • "Abortion referrals not provided."
  • "Our counsel is that abortion compounds rather than solves the problems associated with a crisis pregnancy. First Place Pregnancy Centre never advises, provides, or refers for abortions or abortifacients."

Planned Parenthood and other abortion advocates pretend that they're about "choice". But as the First Place main page says, "If you only have one choice, do you really have a choice at all?"

The antichoicers have won the battle, but let's not let them win the war. You can donate to First Place here.

  • Search: "18 week embryo"

Somebody was searching for "18 week embryo". There is no such thing, any more than there's 19-year-old infant. At conception, the new entity is an embryo. At 8 week, every major system is in place and the young human is now a fetus.

Here is The Visible Embryo's illustration of, and information about, an 18 week fetus. The fetus is about five to five and a half inches long from the crown of its head to its bottom (they're measured that way because of how they lie curled up in the womb) and weighs about 5.25 ounces or 150 grams. Among the developmental milestones:
    • Fetus has phases of sleep and waking and may prefer a favorite sleep position. .... Eyebrows begin to form.
    • Ovaries of female fetuses contain primitive egg cells. The uterus of female fetuses is also fully formed.

At this site you can see 3D ultrasounds of unborn babies of various ages, and ultrasound video clips of 17 and 19 week fetuses.

Here is the famous Life magazine cover showing an 18-week fetus, still alive and with the amniotic sac entact, after a hysterotomy abortion. (Like a c-section, but with the intention being a dead fetus rather than a live baby.)

What does an abortion do to an 18 week fetus? A medical illustration of how a second-trimester D&E abortion is performed is here. The illustration uses a 14-week fetus but the only difference in a D&E at 18 weeks is the size, as you can see by this medical illustration of a D&E abortion of a 23-week fetus. And this site offers footage of an actual D&E abortion, though I can't determine exactly what gestational age. It's not far off from 18 weeks, as best as I can tell, and it's very graphic so click at your own risk. I can't find properly labeled photos of the body of a D&E aborted baby specifically at 18 weeks, but this one certainly is in the ballpark.

For a blast from the past, here is a picture of some "candy apple babies", as the victims of saline abortions were called. The bright red color of these babies was caused by the saline eating away the outer layer of skin. Abortion practitioners in the United States have largely abandoned this technique, which was usually done overnight in a hospital, for the D&E method which is far less likely to result in a dreaded live birth.

  • Anniversary: Abortion leads to amputation

"Nadine" went to Women's Medical Center of Los Angeles on December 5, 1981. She said later that the consent for her abortion was "obtained solely and directly as the result of certain false, misleading, deceitful, and fraudulent statements and representations and concealment of facts on the part of the defendants." Had it not been for the misrepresentations by clinic staff, Nadine said, she never would have consented to the abortion.

The abortion was performed by Emmanuel Brandeis. When the intravenous drugs were administered, damage was done to Nadine's nerves and tissues in her right hand. She had to have portions of her fingers amputated as a result. The consent forms had never mentioned amputation as a potential complication. (LA County Superior Court Case No. WEC073497)

Nadine is not the only patient who required amputations as a result of something going wrong with an abortion. Patient "Lina," age 22, filed suit after an abortion performed by Oscar Gonzalez on April 1, 1985. Gonzales injected her with phenegren for the abortion, and sent her home afterward although her hand was swelling and developing a rash. When Lina's arm swelled and turned purple she went to the emergency room. Her arm developed gangrene and had to be amputated. Gonzalez reportedly admitted he may have misinjected the medication. (Houston Chronicle 7-18-85, Suburbia Reporter 7-24-85)

We also received reports at Life Dynamics of one woman who had to have a leg amputated due to post-abortion sepsis, and another woman who lost both feet and both arms below the elbow as a result of post-abortion sepsis. These women did not complain to the medical board or file suit, and did not wish to discuss their cases with us.

The most high-profile abortion amputation case is that of Carolina Gutierrez, who died after multiple amputations for post-abortion sepsis.

NAF's web site promises "Referrals to quality abortion providers in the caller's area" and assures women that "In order to become a member, a clinic must complete a rigorous application process. Member clinics have agreed to comply with our standards for quality and care, updated annually in our Clinical Policy Guidelines, which set the evidence-based standards for abortion care in North America.". One look at what NAF promises and what they actually deliver ought to be enough to send any Attorney General off in search of an indictment for false advertising.

  • Deborah Lyn Levich is the Alabama provider of vital reproductive health care services supervising the nurse who gave RU-486 to a gravely ill pregnant woman who was nearly 40 weeks pregnant. And -- shades of Eastern Women's Center! -- the clinic in question was a National Abortion Federation member!

  • Death from illegal abortion: After Roe. Performed by amateurs (the rarest type). Performed by midwives and other paramedical folks (more common). Performed by doctors (the most common kind).

  • Abortion and Katz: Dr. Henry Katz was charged with manslaughter in the 1942 death of Harriet Lichtenberg. Dr. Maxwell Katz was indicted for manslaughter in the 1936 death of Rose Lipner. Or maybe our searcher was looking for Katz, the researcher who wrote up the legal abortion deaths of "Alice", "Anita", "Barbara", "Andrea", "Audrey", "April", "Annie", "Beth", "Judy", "Kimberly", "Tammy", "Vicki", "Becky", "Sandra", "Colleen", "Connie", "Robin", "Danielle", "Julie", "Roseanne", "Amanda", "Sheryl", "Sarah", Carole Schaner, "Amy", "Roxanne", and (though I had so many other sources I didn't cite Katz), Margaret Louise Smith.

    A quote from Kafka

"All human errors are impatience, a premature breaking off of methodical procedure, an apparent fencing-in of what is apparently at issue."
    — Franz Kafka

If my hands didn't hurt so much from typing up my new pages on pervy abortionists I'd write something pithy applying this to how women end up on the abortion table.

They'll be going up as soon as I finish the one on Jesse Floyd. They are:

  • Milan Chepko, Abortionist and Child Porn Swapper: Abortion provider Milan D. Chepko was caught with pornographic videotapes involving children as young as four years old.

  • Richard Ragsdale: Prochoice icon not too popular with women he injured: Lawsuits for botched abortions alleged additional surgery, hysterectomy.

  • Richard Ragsdale: Caught with pornographic photos of foster daughter: One photo showed the three-year-old girl in black lace thong panties.

  • George Elliott Kabacy, Abortionist and Child Pornographer: Former Planned Parenthood and Lovejoy Surgicenter aboritonist pleaded guilty to child pornography charges - including bestiality and bondage.
  • Anniversary: Woman dies after abortion by medical student

Queens patrolman Howard Bailey, morgue attendant Victor Genz, and a Texas medical student, Benjamin Lockhart, were arrested in the December 4, 1965 abortion death of Rita Shea, a 33-year-old Long Island woman. Lockhart confessed to performing the abortion in a motel room near Kennedy airport. After Rita died, her body was put in a car outside her home.

Bailey, a married man, had evidently arranged the abortion to keep his affair with Rita a secret.

Rita's abortion was a bit unusual in that most pre-legalization abortions were done by physicians. But abortions like hers, performed by people with at least some medical training, were still more common than amateur or self-induced abortions. (See The Bad Old Days of Abortion.)

    These sex scandals remind me...

    A true story.

When we were researching Lime 5, Mark subscribed to a clipping service to send us news clippings about doctors caught sexually abusing their patients.

We got one that said that the citizens of one community were outraged at the news that Dr. Johnson had been raping his patients for a number of years. They were also somewhat at a loss as to what to do about the closing of his practice, since he had been the only veterinarian in town.

Searches: Perverts and quacks, for the most part

  • "bloody valentine murder 14 feb 2001 hamilton" -- That'd be Oklahmoa abortionist John Baxter Hamilton (pictured), who beat his wife, Susan, to death. A true friend to women, Dr. Hamilton.

  • Barbara Lofton was the self-styled "doctor" who ran Maryland's notorious Hillview abortion clinic, where Suzanne Logan and Debra Gray were fatally injured in their safe and legal abortions. Their reproductive health services provider, Gideon Kioko, tried to weasel out of his responsibility by pointing out that Lofton's staff had the women knocked out, spread-eagled, and on the table before he even walked into the procedure room. Ah, yes, another stalwart friend of women!

  • Steve Pine (I've seen his name spelled both Steven and Stephen) is the abortion provider who provided Belinda Byrd with her fatal abortion at Inglewood Women's Hospital in California. Pine also botched abortions on Shanti F. and possibly several other women, botched a D&C on Juana N., and a tubal ligation on Debra W., and abortions on Vicky R. and Betty M. at Inglewood.

  • Abu Hayat was the National Abortion Federation member who performed the fatal abortion on Sophie McCoy, ripped the arm off Ana Rosa Rodriguez while attempting to abort her at 32 weeks of gestation, sexually abused patients, and was generally such a seedy character that when I was working at Life Dynamics I quipped that even our hate mail was enclosing clippings about him. I'm gonna have to blow the dust off my files and write up all the cases. This guy was, ahem, a dedicated provider of vital reproductive health care services, that's for sure.

  • Hamid Hussain Sheikh is the Kentucky abortion provider who was recently indicted for Medicaid fraud.

  • Steve Infante remains a popular search. He's the 51-year-old Connecticut man indicted on charges relating to sexual abuse of a girl beginning when she was 14. He'd taken her for an abortion at age 17 to cover up the abuse.

  • Gail Mazo died after she aspirated vomit while under general anesthesia for a safe and legal abortion at Mt. Sinai in New York in 1979.

  • I'll be writing a page for Milan Chepko soon. He's one of the abortionists involved in child pornography over the years. Chepko perferred them young -- as young as four years old -- and belonged to (I am NOT making this up) the National and International Diaper Pail Foundation, a group of infantilists who liked to wear diapers, crap in them, and smear themselves with the excrement while masturbating. Definately an A-List party.
  • Kiddie Porn Abortionist Kabacy: Stalwart Hero?

I blogged on December 1 about the guilty plea of Washington abortionist George Kabacy.

KOMO-TV in Seattle presented Kabacy as a stalwart hero, unjustly targeted by fanatics for his devotion to reproductive rights:

In January 1995, at the height of violence against abortion providers, some militant anti-abortionists unveiled their "Deadly Dozen" poster, identifying doctors who performed abortions. Among those listed - with a home address - was Kabacy, who then practiced at Planned Parenthood of the Columbia-Willamette, in Oregon.

    ....

Kabacy, who in 1988 was named the Oregon Medical Association's Doctor-Citizen of the Year ....

Of course, the haighographic coverage of the pervy doctor ommitted the lawsuits against him for the deaths of patients Gwendolyn Lee Ray-Yarbour and Tamara L. Willis. (Not abortion-related deaths, though Gwen died after care at the Lovejoy abortion clinic.)

What else did this admiring coverage omit? Oh yeah! The nature of the crime he'd plead guilty to!

Kabacy admitted in the plea agreement that he knowingly possessed more than 8,000 still digital images and additional video files of child pornography.

    ....

"Defendant further admits that some of said images depicted sadomasochistic conduct, including bondage or bestiality involving minors," the papers say.

"Defendant further admits that some of said images depicted pre-pubescent minors and/or minors under the age of 12 years."

I'd say that at this point George Kabacy trumps Milan Chepko, who stuck with the standard adult-on-child and child-on-child sex, with adult scatology.

Now, you're editing an AP story about this guy. Which do you leave in and which do you edit out? And if you're the AP guy writing the story, wouldn't you check the guy's background for more scandal as well as for whether or not the nutjobs had his name on their "Deadly Dozen" poster?

Anniversary: Bled to death from safe, legal abortion in New Jersey

Andre Nehorayoff was disciplined over the abortion death of a patient identified as "Patient E", aka "Ellen Roe". Nehorayoff performed an abortion on November 29, 1983. Ellen was 18 years old and in the second trimester. The medical history section of her chart contains no entries whatsoever, and Nehoraoff performed no physical examination. He did not order an ultrasound or use laminaria, as would be indicated for a second trimester abortion. After the abortion, Nehorayoff discharged Ellen. He had not removed or identified all fetal parts. "Respondent knew or should have known that he had perfomed an incomplete abortion. Respondent failed to have Patient E transferred to a hospital for observation and completion of the procedure." Nehorayoff entered the following note in Ellen's chart: "Pt. is advised that she might pass some tissue, contact me at any time or if she bleeds heavily." So evidently he was aware that he'd preformed an incomplete abortion.

Two days later, Nehorayoff recieved a lab report that detected only placental tissue in the specimen from Ellen's abortion. Nehorayoff noted no attempt to notify Ellen. He also made no note of the report in Ellen's chart.

At 5:10 AM on December 3, Ellen was rushed to an emergency room. She was already in a coma upon admission. An hour and 10 minutes later, she was pronounced dead. At autopsy there was a portion of the fetal left leg protruding from the uterus, and the cause of death was determined to be from hemorrhage due to the incomplete abortion.

Nehorayoff was also disciplined regarding the death of "Patient F". Nehorayoff's other cases are described here.

Anniversary: Teen bleeds to death after illegal abortion in unlicensed clinic

Teresa Causey clutched her mother's hand during her supposedly safe and legal abortion by Joe Wesley McDaniel on December 3, 1988. Her mother later said that 17-year-old Teresa's last words were, "Oh, mama, mama, it hurts so much!" Then she lost consciousness on the abortion table. When McDaniel was unable to awaken her, he tried smelling salts, slapped her face, then tried to reach another doctor before finally calling an ambulance.

Teresa had two perfortions of her uterus and two lacerated veins. She died of massive hemorrhage the day of her abortion. An investigation found that McDaniel had been operating in an unlicensed facility, and that he had broken the law requiring abortions after 13 weeks be done in a hospital; Teresa had been 15 weeks pregnant. No charges were pressed against McDaniel for Teresa's death, the illegal abortion, or the unlicensed facility. Teresa left behind two children.

Anniversary: Another death for seedy California abortion mill

Twenty-three-year-old Cora Mae Lewis is one of six deaths currently attributed to Inglewood Women's Hospital (aka Inglewood Women's Clinic) in Los Angeles County. Cora had her on November 4, 1983. She had gonorrhea at the time of the abortion, which led to inflammation of the cervix and uterus. Cora developed fever and chills after her abortion, and was finally admitted to a hospital on Novmber 11. She was aggressively treated for pneumonia, including surgery, but died December 3. The coroner attributed her death to pneumonia and lung abscess contributed to by the uterine and cervical inflammation.

Cora is one of many deaths currently attributed to Inglewood. The others are Yvonne Tanner, Kathy Murphy, Belinda Byrd, Lynette Wallace, and Elizabeth Tsuji.

    Anniversary: Ruptured uterus, fatal hemorrhage

On December 2, 1977, 29-year-old Jackie Bailey was injected with saline by Dr. Eboreime for an abortion at Pacific Glen Hospital in Los Angeles County. Five hours after Jackie expelled the dead baby, her condition appeared grave. Shortly after midnight, she was transferred to Memorial Hospital of Glendale. Doctors at Memorial suspected a uterine laceration, so they performed exploratory surgery. The bleeding was so profuse that they then performed a hysterectomy in a last-ditch attempt to save her life. Jackie died just before sunrise on December 3.

The autopsy report found that Jackie's uterus had ruptured during the abortion, and that her uterine artery had been lacerated. She had bled to death from her injuries.

Anniversary: Dying declaration blames doctor for abortion

Grace Wolf, a young married woman, traveled from her home in Lansing to the office of Dr. C. Allen Snyder in Dubuque, Iowa, on November 19, 1917. She arrived at about 8:00 in the evening. Shortly after leaving, she took ill, and her condition deteriorated until her death on December 3.

The defense argued that Grace was unhappy about her pregnancy and had made several attempts to abort before going to Dr. Snyder. Dr. Snyder said that she was already suffering from fever and septicemia when she arrived at his office, and that he treated her only briefly.

Grace had made a dying declaration, written up by an attorney and signed by her, indicating that Dr. Snyder had performed an abortion on her. However, her father was called as a defense witness, and he said that Grace recanted her statement before her death. Other witnesses said that Grace had a cough for several days before her visit to Dr. Snyder.

The autopsy had found evidence of recent pregnancy and a puncture in Grace‘s uterus.

Dr. Snyder was convicted of manslaughter, but the conviction was overturned on appeal.

Anniversary: Death after abortion at National Abortion Federation member

Rudy Alston, stage name Floss, got the page as he sat in the waiting room of Brooklyn Women's Medical Pavilion on December 1, 1998. Tommy Boy Records had just signed the young rapper to a contract. Alston never got to share the news with his fiance, 22-year-old Tamika Dowdy. She was dying from complications of her abortion.

Staff at the clinic summoned emergency care for a woman with difficulty breathing. Police arrived first, followed by paramedics at 6 P.M. The medics worked to save Tamika, performing CPR, as Altson waited. He'd been waiting since noon. Alston, age 22, reportedly told the New York Post that a doctor had kept walking in and out of the waiting room, "sweating real fierce and pacing. He did that several times, and then he finally came up to me and said that her heart had stopped. Alston rode by her side to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead the following day.

Alston and Dowdy had lived a floor apart, planning to be married in January or February of 1999. They'd decided on abortion because Dowdy wanted to go to a two-year school to learn accounting so she could handle the finances of Alston's band, Council. Dowdy had been four months pregnant.

The facility had been in trouble earlier, after an incident on November 14 in which a woman suffered a perforated uterus. The Health Department lost that woman to follow up after she left the hospital. Dowdy's death was under investigation as of the publication of the New York Post story.

According to the National Abortion Federation web site, Brooklyn Women's Medical Pavilion was a member facility.

Anniversaries: Two "back alley" abortion deaths

On December 2, 1901, the body of Rose Lefebre was found in the office of Dr. Volbending. It appeared that Rose had died from an abortion. Dr. Volbending was arrested, but she was later exonerated by a Coroner's Jury.

On December 5, 1948, Dr. Cyril B. Babb pleaded guilty to performing a fatal abortion on Doris Becker the previous Wednesday in his office. Doris died 20 hours later at the apartment of a friend, Anne Martin. Anne and a bartender, George Kutrones, were held as material witnesses. Babb also admitted to performing 30 other abortions. Doris's abortion was typical of pre-legalization abortions in that it was performed by a physician.

    Reproductive Rights and Wrongs

What Women Want: Not Reproductive Oppression

Pat McEwen was visiting the small village of Huaca, high in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador. The village, not far from the Colombian border, was teeming with refugees fleeing from the ongoing battles between government forces and the drug lords. Mostly women and children, the refugees had arrived with only the possessions that they could carry. Many had lost husbands, sons and daughters to the conflict. ....

Pat decided to ask the group of 42 refugee women that she was meeting with three simple questions: "What are the things you worry about most often? What are your greatest needs? What can I do to help you the most?" Their worries centered around their children, their husbands, and family members from whom they had become separated. Their most pressing need was for blankets and warm clothes. Second was a way to provide for their families. A close third was medicine or health care for their children. Not one mentioned family planning.

Pat then went right to the heart of the "reproductive health care" controversy. "If I could provide a way for you to have fewer children, or no more children, or to not be pregnant if you are pregnant, would you be interested?" she asked them.

The atmosphere in the room, pleasant up to that point, instantly turned chilly. The women whispered among themselves, shooting Pat looks that were no longer friendly. Then one woman, her voice rising in indignation, spoke for all: "Sabe nada, estupida Americana!" Up to this point in the interview, Pat had been relying on translators to help with her halting Spanish, but this stinging barb came through loud and clear: "You understand nothing, stupid American!"

These refugee women had no use for contraceptives, sterilizations, or abortions and rejected Pat's offer of "reproductive health care" out of hand. "The reproductive 'right' that these refugee women wanted was the right not to have me or anyone else interfere in their reproductive lives," Pat recalled later. "They understood that more children meant more minds to plan the future, more hands to share the work, and more hearts to share joy and sorrow. These women had lost family members to violent deaths, but they understood that their children were the promise that there would still be a tomorrow."

Don't take PRI's word for it. Prochoice researcher Betsy Hartmann wrote an excellent book, Reproductive Rights and Wrongs, that came to the same conclusions: women who are considered prime targets for "reproductive rights" don't want the birth control and abortion being shoved at them.

A 2001 survey carried out by PRI in the Ghanan city of Takoradi surveyed 397 people of both sexes. They were interviewed by professionals and given a list of 15 health programs and asked to rank them according to their own personal needs. The health programs listed were: Malaria Eradication, Leprosy Treatment, Reproductive Health, Syphilis Treatment, Polio Prevention, Clean Water Programs, Natural Family Planning, Sleeping Sickness, Gonorrhea Treatment, Tuberculosis Treatment, Yellow Fever, HIV/AIDS Prevention, Cholera Treatment, Measles Prevention, and Other Programs (unspecified).

What did the citizens of Ghana list as their most pressing health needs? Malaria Eradication, Natural Family Planning, Clean Water, Measles Prevention, and HIV/AIDS Prevention.

Signs that these citizens see through the duplicity of population control fanatics can be seen in the comments section: "Stop reproductive health; it's not good," "We don't need reproductive health programs." "Stop reproductive health; eradicate malaria."

They have come to see the words "reproductive health" as synonomous with pushy abortion and artificial birth control programs.

Which, of course, means that if a program comes offering real reproductive health care -- PAP smears, STD treatments, obstetric care, etc. -- people who have had bad experiences with population control efforts will understandably not trust the program. They're fed up with the disdain, duplicity, and paternalism of western do-gooders:

PRI investigator Joseph Meaney, visiting a UN refugee camp in Albania in 1999, was struck by the fact that many of the Kosovo refugee women he was speaking to were eager to have more children, in part to make up for those they had lost to Serbian atrocities. When he mentioned this to a UNFPA doctor, the man exploded with distain for his charges: "They're refugees, don't you see! They can't have children!"

Who are we to tell the poor women of the world that they cannot have more children? This is not reproductive health. This is reproductive oppression, and the women from these developing nations recognize it for what it is: an assault on their fertility and ultimately, their race. We should give the poor nations of the world primary health care, not ideological imperialism.

"The White Man's Burden" is alive and well under a new guise.

    Accountability at last for Pendergraft?

Is the tide turning against abortionists who do illegal third-trimester abortions? It could be!

The Florida Medical Board has fined abortionist James S. Pendergraft $10,000 and suspended his license for a year for having performed an illegal 3rd trimester abortion in his outpatient facility in 2005. Florida law only allows third-trimester abortions in hospitals, and only after two doctors attest that the abortion is necessary to save her life. Which means, of course, that all third-trimester abortions are illegal in Florida, since you can induce or do a c-section to save a woman's life if she's that sick or injured that late in the pregnancy. (HT: Birth Story) Pendergraft, of course, will rise like a malevolent phoenix, as he did after being jailed for extortion in 2001. Ashli at The SICLE Cell keeps pretty close tabs on Pendergraft, since he's the guy who pulled her baby out in pieces instead of referring her for help with her hyperemesis, despite the fact that she was crying and repeating that she didn't want the abortion but didn't know what else to do.

    Enough of this turkey.

We have those four late-term abortion faclities in Barcelona that were raided recently. One facility had an industrial-grade grinder on the premises to prepare the aborted babies -- some as much as 8 months of gestation -- into the sewer system.

Might even Teflon Tiller and Planned Parenthood start being held accountable?

    We can only hope.

Dennis Boom is the widower of Linda Boom, who died in 1995 from a saline abortion performed at Sinai Samaritan Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

News coverage of the case does not indicate why fourth-year resident Karen S. Watson and her supervising physician, Daniel Gilman, chose the antiquated instillation technique for Linda's abortion. Since the late 1960s, nations such as Sweden, Japan, and the Soviet Union had abandoned instillation abortions as being far too dangerous for the mother. US abortionists began abandoning the technique in the mid-1980s.

Linda had chosen abortion because her baby had been diagnosed with Down syndrome.

Abortionist pleads guilty to child porn charges

Dr. George Elliott Kabacy has pleaded guilty to child pornography charges.

Dr. George E. Kabacy, 68, of Lacey, was indicted earlier this year, after a child porn suspect in Georgia provided Kabacy's e-mail address - surgyn97aol.com - as a source of the material, court documents show.

He was scheduled to enter a guilty plea in U.S. District Court in Tacoma on Friday. The plea agreement had not been made public Thursday, but Kabacy faced one count of possessing child pornography and another of advertising it. ....

FBI Special Agent Ryan Bruett wrote in an affidavit that investigators traced the e-mail address to Kabacy's home, and they also linked it to several hard-core sexual images of prepubescent children on the Internet. When they searched his home last December, "Dr. Kabacy asked what would happen to him," Bruett wrote. "I responded that if we found any child pornography, he would be placed under arrest. He responded, 'You will."'

And they did, including a number of compact discs showing young children in sexual situations, Bruett wrote.

Kabacy worked at Lovejoy Surgicenter, a founding member of the National Abortion Federation. He was sued for malpractice in the death of Gwendolyn Lee Ray-Yarbour, age 30, who died June 6, 1992, of anesthesia complications relating to a tubal ligation performed by Kabacy at Lovejoy the previous day. Gwen's death left four children, ages 4, 10, 11, and 12, motherless.

Kabacy was also sued over the death of Tamara L. Willis due to failure to send tissue to a pathology lab on March 21, 1988, leading to a failure to diagnose malignant melanoma. Tamara was hospitalized September 8 - October 25 for chemotheraph, multiple bone marrow aspirations, and repeated x-rays and scans. She was hospitalized again December 25, suffering blindness, headache, weakness, vomiting, pain, coma until her death January 29, 1989.

Kabacy also worked at Planned Parenthood of the Columbia-Willamette, in Oregon, and at Sound Choice Health Center in Olympia, where he was arrested.

Kabacy wasn't the first abortionist to face child pornography charges. Prochoice icon Richard Ragsdale was indicted with his wife on four counts of child pornography involving their 3-year-old foster daughter. One of the photographs showed the child dressed in black lace thong panties "with her genitalia and buttocks exposed".

Milan Chepko was sentenced on charges related to mailing videotapes of minors as young as 4 years old involved in sexual acts such as oral sex with adults and/or other children, and an adult masturbating while smearing excrement on his body. Charges included inducing or coercing a minor to engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producing movies, knowingly shipping the movies across state lines, and using a false name or making a false statement to a U.S. agency. An affidavit filed in federal court charged that the recepient of the videotape possessed materal indicating that he and his correspondents were "members or supporters of the 'National and International Diaper Pail Foundation' in which members are infantalists who enjoyed wearing diapers, defecating in the diapers and smearing the defecation on the body while masturbating." Federal agents allegedly found correspondence form the recipient in Chepko's house, along with child pornography including a video titled "Diaper Dump". And FBI affidavit also states that Chepko admitted to mailing and recieving the child pornography.

Anniversary: Woman left paralyzed and mute by botched abortion dies in Maryland nursing home

On December 1, 1992, Suzanne Logan died in a Maryland nursing home, where she had spent the previous three years, mute and paralyzed. Suzanne died one month after winning a lawsuit against abortionist Gideon Kioko and the notorious Hillview abortion clinic. She never got the one thing she wished for -- to see her father again.

Suzanne had been moved to the nursing home after lapsing into a coma during the abortion. She awoke about four months later, permanently incapactitated. Local prolifers bought her a communication device and visited her, and she was eventually able to recall having gone to the abortion facility on September 9, 1989. Her abortion was performed by Gideon Kioko. She was 13 weeks pregnant.

There was no record of how much intravenous Brevital was administered to Suzanne, or who administered the drug. Suzanne was already unconscious on the table when Kioko and his nurse entered the procedure room. Kioko was being assisted by an unlicensed nurse, who noted that Suzanne's lips were turning blue. She told Kioko, who continued with the abortion procedure. There is no record that anybody monitored her vital signs or administered oxygen during the procedure.

The nurse summoned Barbara Lofton, who came into the room with Dr. Raymond Taylor, a doctor Hillview used to provide aftercare. Taylor began to attend to Suzanne. Eventually somebody summoned emergency medical services (EMS). The EMS personnel reported that the Hillview employees seemed "very confused and did not seem to know what they were doing." EMS staff also noted that Hillview staff had put an oxygen mask on Suzanne upside-down, so that she wasn't getting any oxygen. Suzanne was cyanotic (she had turned blue from lack of oxygen), her pupils were dilated. She was limp, and had no pulse and was not breathing. EMS workers managed to perform CPR and get Suzanne's heart and lungs working again, and transported her to a hospital.

Debra Gray also died after an abortion at Hillview. Hillview's owner, Barbara Lofton, had opened an abortion clinic in the District of Columbia, but had been closed down for operating without a license. So she'd moved two miles over the border into Maryland, where there were no regulations keeping her from running the facility. A former employee interviewed by 60 Minutes thought that Lofton was a doctor because she dressed like a doctor, answered the phone "Dr. Lofton," and performed medical tasks.

Anniversary: Another typical criminal abortion death

On December 1, 1928, 23-year-old Esther V. Wahlstrom died in Chicago from complications of a criminal abortion. Dr. Lou E. Davis was held by the coroner for murder by abortion on December 12. She was indicted for felony murder on December 15. Esther's abortion was typical of illegal abortions in that it was performed by a physician.
