Alexis "Lexi" Arguello |
Lexi's grandparents, who were evidently her emergency contacts, described her as kind, caring, and responsible. She had just moved out of the family home into her own apartment. Shortly after the move, Lexi sought care for a urinary tract infection and learned that she was 22 weeks pregnant.
According to what OR has been able to gather so far, Lexi arrived at the Fort Collins Planned Parenthood on February 6, 2025. Planned Parenthood estimated that she was 20 weeks pregnant, but Dr. Keri Kasun, a pharmacist contacted by close family because she was a distant relation, reporting in the Health and Human Services investigative hearing, concluded that Lexi had actually been 22 weeks into her pregnancy.
The Fort Collins PP website indicates that they only do abortions in the facility up to 19 weeks and 6 days. This is a management choice, since Colorado has no restrictions on abortion.
Lexi's grandparents hadn't known about the pregnancy. They weren't contacted until after she was at the hospital. Her grandfather watched as doctors did everything they could to save her, including multiple doses of epinephrine and seven liters of blood. She died as he watched helplessly.
Lexi had evidently suffered an amniotic fluid embolism (AFE), which triggered disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC, a clotting disorder). DIC can cause massive, uncontrolled bleeding from even minor breaks in organs, skin, and blood vessels. It's vital that doctors quickly identify AFE and DIC, and that they take swift measures to confirm the diagnosis and start immediate targeted life-saving procedures.Dr. Kasun further testified that Lexi "didn't receive the urgency of care that would be required in order to have a chance to survive this condition. Instead, she got the silent siren treatment." She said that Lexi's grandparents relayed to her that Planned Parenthood staff admitted that they delayed calling an ambulance.
Operation Rescue also noted other cases of women sent to the emergency room after abortions at the Fort Collins Planned Parenthood.
