Something interesting I've noticed as I plough through the archives is that as the 1960's approach, the death stories start to dry up, and are replaced by calls for the repeal of abortion laws. Why the sudden change? Two words: Thalidomide. Reubella.

Suddenly abortion wasn't the horror -- disabled babies were. And it was worth any cost to keep them from being born. And remember, this is back before prenatal testing, before ultrasound. If the mother had been exposed to something that might cause her unborn baby to be anything but the longed-for ten-fingers-ten-toes, just that risk was enough to warrant a death senence for the fetus.

But then, "tolerance" and "diversity" weren't buzzwords yet, and this was long before the Americans with Disabilities Act, so folks might be excused for looking at disabled kids with such horror and loathing.

    What's our excuse today?
  • 1923: Typical abortion turns deadly

On April 30, 1923, 29-year-old Emma Herod died in her home from an abortion performed there that day. Dr. Emma J. Warren was arrested for the death. On July 15, Warren was indicted for felony murder in Emma Herod's death.

Emma's abortion was typical of criminal abortions in that it was performed by a physician.

    A great rant

The Impatient Patient rants about abortion advocate Vicki Saporta's disingenuous opposition of Bill C-484

TIP raises a lot of excellent points, but misses the big one. Opposition to Bill C-484 isn't about defending the rights of women over the rights of fetuses. It's about defending the interests of women who want dead fetuses at the expense of the women who want their babies to live. Saporta and her ilk are so enamored of the cause of dead fetuses that they're not even willing to throw a bone to women who prefer live ones.

    What's the priority here?

I've been researching criminal abortions again, and I'm coming across hagiographic pages about Dr. William Jennings Bryan Henrie, an Oklahoma physician/abortionist. All the writers gush about what a kindly, grandfatherly fellow he was, how he never judged and always helped a woman "in need".

    BUT HE KILLED THEIR BABIES.

That's the thing I can never get past. Abortion wouldn't be bad if it didn't kill babies. But once you remove your blinders and see the dead baby, all the dressing about what a kindly guy old Doc Henrie was, what pickles the women were in, how their families were relieved that he'd unburdened them, etc, gets pretty sickening. The woman goes back to life as normal. Henrie pockets his fee. The BABY is dead.

That's an awfully big thing to just brush off as irrelevant. I can't do it.

One more interesting thing: Everybody goes into rhapsodies about what a saint old Doc Henrie was. They hardly even bother to notice the woman he was convicted of killing in a botched abortion. And when they do mention her, it's not to recognize her as a human being, as somebody whose life and death mattered. This woman's death gets noticed by Henrie's cheerleaders only to lament that he got picked on for it.

Nobody even bothers to mention her name.

Supposedly it's all about the woman. But you know what? I found all these web sites about what a great guy old Doc Henrie because I was trying to find out about this woman. I wanted to know about her, about who she was, about what had happened to end her life. But I found diddly squat, not even her hame. None of the advocates for women bothers to even mention it. She was a nobody to them. It's all about him.

This woman died. And the only significance she had to the supporters of "women" is that she caused so much trouble for poor beleaguered Doc Henrie.

If the babies are just disposable, and the women are nobody, who is it all about, really? Or perhaps the better question is what is it all about?

UPDATE: They don't care. I do. I tracked her down. I learned her name: Jolene Griffith. She had a name. She had a life. She had a husband. She had three children. She mattered.

1990: Home abortion kills California woman

In Chapter 4 of Lime 5, Mona ghost-wrote of the death of a 32-year-old California woman I'll call "Daisy".

We learned of Daisy's death by ordering a database run of all deaths in California that met the ICD codes for abortion. We then ordered death certificates and, where possible, autopsy reports. Daisy's death certificate is No. 90-079380. Her autopsy report from the San Bernadino County Coroner's office is number 90-2384.

Daisy was not a poor, ignorant woman. To the contrary, she was a systems analyst for a defense contractor. Daisy knew that abortion was legal and readily available. She had an appointment to abort her second-trimester pregnancy scheduled for April 30, 1990, at a local abortion clinic.

But for some reason, Daisy didn't wait for her appointment. On April 28, she allowed her boyfriend to insert a plastic tube into her uterus in a home-abortion attempt. Daisy died of complications of that abortion.

1973: Prominent civil-rights activist kills abortion patient

Survivors of Julia L. Rogers, age 20, alleged that she underwent an abortion by Theodore Roosevelt Mason Howard at Friendship Medical Center in Chicago on April 21, 1973. Julia's death certificate states that her death April 28 at Tabernacle Hospital was due to "bronchopneumonia and generalized peritonitis complicating extensive necrotizing endometritis and myometritis with sealed perforation."

In other words, she developed pnuemonia on top of peritonitis. A hole had been poked in her uterus, causing an infection that made the muscle tissue of her uterus start to rot inside her.

Evelyn Dudley and Dorothy Brown also died after abortions at Friendship Medical Center.

1990: Children, babysitter helpless as mom bleeds to death

On April 27, 1990, 23-year-old Sandra Milton underwent an abortion, performed by Dr. Carl Armstrong at Toledo Medical Services in Ohio. Sandra's abortion was performed at 10 a.m., and she was discharged shortly thereafter for the 90-minute drive home.

The babysitter stayed with Sandra and her three children for three hours as the young mother slipped in and out of consciousness and suffered pain and abdominal swelling. Twice the alarmed babysitter called the clinic, but was told that the symptoms were normal. The third time the babysitter called the clinic, she got no response at all, and summoned an ambulance.

Sandra was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Her children had watched her bleed to death two weeks before Mother's Day.

1871: Many doctors, one dead patient

Dr. Charles P. Wood admitted that Elvira Woodward had come to his house in Manchester, New Hampshire, on April 1 and remained there until her death on April 27. He said that she'd expelled a dead fetus on April 3, and that she suffered from puerperal fever.

Elvira took ill, languishing and finally dying on April 27, at about 2:30 PM, at Wood's house. Dr. Wood was arrested and tried for performing a fatal abortion.

During the time Elvira was sick at Dr. Wood's house, she was visited by her sister, a man named Daniel K. White, a Dr. Ferguson, her sister Florence, and a woman named Mrs. Eaton. All of them testified that Elvira was desperately ill and wishing to die. Florence later indicated that she'd known nothing about an abortion, that she'd believed her sister to be suffering simply from fever.

One of Dr. Wood's defense witnesses said that on the morning of her death, Elvira said that she'd been operated on previously by a Dr. McCooms for an abortion. Dr. McCooms had operated on her three times at a place in Manchester and once at Suncook. She also reportedly told the witness that Dr. McCoombs had prescribed oil of savin for her, which she ingested. She said that she'd expelled a fetus on April 3.

A Mrs. Merrill, Elvira's landlady, testified that she'd accompanied Elvira to Dr. McCoomb's rooms at the Manchester House on February 8. Elvira spent about an hour with Dr. McCoomb in an inner room. Mrs. Merrill said that she herself only briefly been in the inner room herself, at which time she saw Dr. McCoomb performing an abortion on Elvira.

Dr. Ferguson testified that all he knew of oil of savin is what he'd elarned from reading, and that it was supposed to be capable of causing abortion. He thought that oil of savin might be responsible for Elvira's condition when he saw her.

Dr. Webb of Boston testified that at the request of an attorney, he'd examined Elvira on March 20, 1871. He said her uterus was enlarged and he could feel movement in the womb and he heard a fetal heartbeat. He estimated that she was four or five months pregnant.

Dr. Buck testified that he performed a post-mortem examination of Elvira's body at North Troy, Vermont, on May 2. He said that there was no fetus, but that there was evidence that she'd been "delivered by artificial means." Dr. Buck said that he saw no signs that Elvira's kidneys or stomach had been damaged by any kind of poison, and that any drug that would cause an abortion that far advanced into a pregnancy would also damage the mother's organs. Dr. Gilman Kimball concurred in his testimony.

A Mr. Ober testified that he'd heard reports prior to the trial that Dr. Wood had once had an office or lying-in hospital in Hollis, and that it was reported that Dr. Wood performed abortions there.

Dr. Wood was convicted of performing the fatal aboriton on Elvira. Her abortion was typical of pre-legalization abortions in that it was performed by a doctor.

    1914, 1926, Business as Usual

On April 26, 1914, eighteen-year-old Florence S. Lindquist died in a Chicago home where an abortion had been performed on her. Dr. Arthur Schulz, who lived at the home in question, was arrested for her death. Florence's abortion was typical of pre-legalization abortions in that it was performed by a physician.

On April 26, 1926, Mrs. Fern Strecker, age 26, died at West Suburban Hospital from an abortion performed that day. The coroner fingered Elizabeth Schade, who was operating an illegal abortion business at a Chicago location. Aside from her abortion work, Schade's profession is not given.

    How many babies died?

Pregnant Indiana Bank Teller Hurt in Robbery Loses Twins

The young mom suffered complications from the gunshot wound. One twin died in-utero. The other was born alive, then died.

She was five months pregnant -- 20 weeks, well inside the legal limit for elective abortion in every state in the union. But she also loved these babies and wanted them to live.

What was her loss here? Just the idea of motherhood? Potential children? Real children? One potential child and one real child?

To the prolifer, this woman lost two babies. The loss of each child is equally horrible, tragic, and morally significant. To the prolifer, two children lost their lives.

But how do the prochoice see this? Did this woman lose one child or two? Or none, just the potential for a child? Does the wantedness of these children impact what they were? Does where they were when they died change whether they were people or things? Is love like real estate: Location, location, location?

    Really. Do tell.

1899: Chicago abortion leaves woman dead at scene

On April 25, 1899, Sarah Messinger died in St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago from an abortion performed by Marie Kampfer. Sarah died at the crime scene on the day the abortion was performed. Kampfer was held for $5,000 bond by Coroner's Jury.

1902: Seduced and betrayed and led to her death

In January of 1902, Abraham Conheim promised marriage to 19-year-old Harriet Larocque. According to her father, Harriet was "previously chaste and of good reputation." With the promise of marriage, Harriet became sexually involved with Conheim. In April of 1902, Harriet discovered that she was pregnant. Conheim reneged on his promise of marriage, and instead arranged a criminal abortion for her. Harriet took ill after the abortion, dying on April 25.

Harriet‘s father sued Conheim for seducing and debauching his daughter, impregnanting her, and causing her death.

1955: Destined to become prochoice icon, Harvey Karman proves his dedication to the cause

During April of 1955 Harvey Karman (pictured) was working at the Clinical School of the Psychology Department of the University of California at Los Angeles, seeking a doctorate in psychology. He was not licensed to practice medicine.

Around early February of 1955, 26-year-old Joyce Johnson told her husband, Ben, that she was pregnant. They discussed an abortion. Joyce had a friend named Patricia who she saw shortly before she met Karman. Prior to the abortion, according to both Patricia and Joyce's husband, Joyce was in good health.

On April 6, 1955, Karman met Joyce in a motel room and, using a speculum, inserted a nutcracker into Joyce in order to perform an abortion.

On April 8, Joyce's husband took her to St. Joseph's Hospital. She was examined by a Dr. Moss who diagnosed her as suffering from "an infected criminal abortion." The dead fetus was still in her uterus. She expelled it while at St. Joseph's.

On April 13, Joyce was transferred to General Hospital for specialized treatment. She died there on April 21. An autopsy was performed, and Joyce's death blamed on bronchial pneumonia brought on by the septic abortion.

Karman's defense called a Dr. Gilbert as an expert. He reviewed the autopsy report and medical records, an opined that Joyce did not die from a septic abortion. He was paid $150 for his testimony, ironically the same amount Joyce paid for the abortion.

The defense also appealed on the grounds that the the DA unduly prejudiced the jury by bringing out in cross-examining Karman that he'd been conviced previously of a felony. The appeals court ruled that this was proper impeachment of a witness.

Karman's defense also argued that Joyce's husband and friend were improperly granted immunity after they originally refused to testify.

Karman's defense also claimed that the prosecution failed to prove that the abortion wasn't necessary to save Joyce's life. But the appeals court found that the testimony of Joyce's husband and friend that Joyce had been in good health, settled that matter. Of course, pure logic would prove that matter, since Joyce was seeking an illegal abortion from a guy like Harvey in a motel room. Had her life been in danger, an ob/gyn would have been able to admit her to a hospital and perform the abortion there.

Karman was convicted of the abortion by a jury. However, he was released from prison when Jerry Brown became governor. His education had been interrputed by the prison sentence, so Karman just vested himself with a PhD from a non-existent European university to make up for lost time. Thus, styled "Dr." Karman, he went on to become quite the prochoice darling, speaking on abortion at various symposia. The "Jane" illegal abortion ring in Chicago had him train them in his abortion technique, and brought him a busload of minority women to experiment on with his "super coil" abortion technique. And it wasn't just homegrown criminal abortionists who embraced Harvey -- the Internataional Planned Parenthood Federation, in concert with the government of Bangladesh, invited Harvey to use rape victims as ginuea pigs as well. Evidently the only qualifications required to be a hero to these people is that you're willing to do the abortion.

The description alone freaks me out. The pictures and video? Yikes!

    1898: A doctor, a nurse, a dead woman

Hughretta "Etta" Binkley was an unmarried woman about 34 years old. She worked as a stenographer and typist at Patee Bicycle Company in Peoria. She lived in a boardinghouse owned by George H. Lilly, where she shared a room with Lilly's daughter.

At lunchtime on April 1, 1898, she went to the residence/office of Dr.Belle Howard, aka Belle Shotwell, about four blocks from the boarding house. After work the following day, at about 6:30 PM, she returned to Dr. Howard's house and was sent to a room on the second floor. Etta had a bag packed with a nightgown, robe, fountain syringe, and a bottle containing about two ounces of ergot.

According to Ida Kennedy, Dr. Howard's nurse, at about 10:00 the next morning, Etta went into the doctor's office where she remained about 20 to 30 minutes. She then went upstairs to her room, in Ida's care.

Etta was in pain, and bleeding heavily vaginally. At around 4 or 5 in the afternoon, Dr. Howard visited her in her room, then had her come back downstairs to his office where she again remained alone with her for between 20 and 30 minutes. Again, Ida took Etta to her room.

Soon after returning to her room, Etta suffered from rapid pulse and a copious discharge of blood and clear fluid. Etta remained at Dr. Howard's house, attended by the doctor and nurse, until the evening of Saturday, April 9. At that time, Dr. Howard drove Etta in her buggy back to the boarding house, where she left her alone on the porch. Mr. Lilly found her there as he was locking up for the night. He discribed her as being in "a very helpless and distressed condition."

Mr. Lilly brought her into the house, where she went to her room and retired to her usual bed with Lilly's daughter. (It was not uncommon at that time for adults to share a bed in a boarding house, purely as roommates.)

The following morning, at about 9:00, Etta went to the nearby Cottage Hospital, where she was immediately admitted. Staff physician Otho B. Will was immediately summoned to care for her.

Dr. Will found Etta to be trembling, breathing rapidly, suffering a pulse of 140 and a fever of just over 102 degrees. She was frequently vomiting. Dr. Will examined her and performed surgery to remove decaying and fetid retained portions of placenta.

Etta remained hospitalized under Dr. Will's care until April 19, when she died of septicemia. Her body was sent to her parents in Dublin, Indiana, for burial, but then exhumed on the 23rd for an autopsy. It was then confirmed that the septicemia had been caused by an abortion. Experts estimated that Etta had been four to five months pregnant.

Immediately after Etta's death, Dr. Howard fled the state and had to be captured and returned for face trial. Dr. Howard maintained her innocence and insisted that she was merely treating Etta for complications of an abortion performed either by Etta herself or by some other party. The prosecution said that up until her arrival at Dr. Howard's house, Etta had been in good health and had performed her duties at work. However, Miss Lilly reported that Etta had not seemed to be in her usual health just prior to the 2nd of April, and that she had observed bleeding that she took to be Etta's period. Ida Kennedy, the nurse, also testified that on her way to her room on the 2nd, Etta left drops of blood on the floor.

Dr. Howard was convicted of manslaughter in Etta's death. A Fred Patee was also charged in the death, but my documents do not make it clear what his role was.

Etta's abortion was typical of criminal abortions in that it was performed by a doctor.

1977 and 1986: Bleeding to death safely and legally

Mary Paredez was 26 years old when she underwent an abortion at San Jose Hospital on April 19, 1977. During the procedure, Mary's uterus was perforated. She began to hemorrhage. Less than seven hours later, she was dead. The autopsy found 2500 cc of blood in Mary's abdomen.

Twenty-year-old Gloria Aponte went to National Abortion Federation member Hanan Rotem in Stamford, Connecticut, for an abortion on April 19, 1986. A few hours after the abortion, Gloria was declared dead from hemorrhage at a nearby hospital. Rotem claimed that Gloria had died from an amniotic fluid embolism. An investigation by health officials found that Rotem had failed to perform necessary blood tests, and had permitted a receptionist with no medical training to administer anesthesia.

1971 -- First verified suicide after safe, legal abortion

"Sandra" was 18 years old when she underwent a first-trimester abortion procedure in New York. Three days later, on April 18, 1971, Sandra killed herself. Before her death, she had expressed guilt about having "killed her baby."

Tragically, nobody had contacted Sandra to give her the results of the pathology report on what had been removed from her uterus. There had been no embryo. Sandra had not actually been pregnant.

Sandra's needless death underscores two issues:

    1. Women who undergo abortions are more likely to die violent deaths, especially to commit suicide, compared to women who carry to term or who do not experience a pregnancy.

    2. Abortion facilities have a history of slovenly practices, including failing to verify pregnancy and failure to follow up on test results.

    South Park nails it

I find South Park to be pretty hit-or-miss. This one totally nails it:

South Park: "Abortion is the ultimate form of cheating"

The show is a take-off of Stand and Deliver. A girl runs out of class crying, then tells the Jaime Escalante character that she's pregnant:

TEACHER: All right -- let's go get you an abortion.

GIRL: No. I'm Catholic. I think abortion is wrong!

TEACHER: Abortion isn't wrong! What's the one thing I've been teaching you?

    GIRL: That cheating is good?

TEACHER: Yes! And abortion is the ultimate form of cheating! You're cheating nature itself! Why do rich white girls get ahead in life? Because they get abortions when they're young. They get pregnant -- but they still want to go to college. So -- whatever! They just cheat. They cheat that little critter in their belly right out of a chance at life.

    ....

TEACHER: It is at our most challenging times that we must cheat our very hardest!

Abortion as art. Please tell me this is a sick joke and not for real.

Not news: College student has multiple abortions. News: For a school project. Fark: Art project.

For senior, abortion a medium for art, political discourse

Yale art major Aliza Shvarts spent nine months artificially inseminating herself then using herbal concoctions to induce abortions. She captured these Kodak moment on video, along with the blood (and presumably the dead embryos), and has used them to put together an "art" project.

The goal in creating the art exhibition, Shvarts said, was to spark conversation and debate on the relationship between art and the human body.

No, the goal was to attract as much attention as possible. Which she has done. If there was a Nobel Prize for Media Whore, this chick would win it, hands-down.

(It's interesting, BTW, that both Shvarts and the Yale student paper refer to her deliberate abortions as "miscarriages". Why is it that people who have no problem with the act of abortion have such a hard time with the word?)

The Yale paper will probably nuke the article as soon as it draws enough disgust, so I saved it. Let me know if you need a copy. You can also read a portion on National Review Online.

PS. I googled this chick. She has also contributed an essay about her first period to a web site somebody started just for collecting such stories. I guess menstruating lost its fascination once the novelty wore off and she had to up the ante somehow.

1998: Second patient bleeds to death

Those insist that legalization of abortion keeps our daughters safe might want to speak to Lou Ann Herron's father, Mike Gibb, who silently wept in the courtroom as he listened to witnesses describe how his daughter was left to bleed to death from a safe-n-legal abortion on April 17, 1998.

Lou Ann was the second patient to bleed to death under abortionist John Biskind's tender ministrations. The first, Lisa Bardsley, had died in 1995.

The clinic's owner, Moshe Hachamovitch, had a history of shoddy abortion practice. Hachamovitch himself performed the fatal abortions on Tanya Williamson, Luz Rodriguez, and Christina Goesswein. Jammie Garcia died after a safe and legal abortion at Hachamovitch's Texas facility.

And where is the prochoice outrage? (Cue crickets chirping.)

    The value of a child

Baby girl in India a treasure, for a change.

The author, Julia Gorin, notes that India, famous for sex-selection abortions, has nevertheless embraced Kumar, a little girl who is described as being a baby with two faces. (I suspect we're seeing two little girls with one body; it depends on whether there is one brain or two in that tiny head.) Gorin further notes that Lakshmi, a little girl born with four legs, was also embraced in a country that usually devalues girls. Gorin concludes, "So now we know the secret to not getting buried in the desert if you’re born female in India: Deformity."

We also know the secret, apparently, to not being targeted for abortion or euthanasia if you happen to be different: Get concieved in India.

The difference, it seems, between being adored as a diety and being thrown away as medical waste depends on the value system of the adults around you.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could all meet in the middle and simply welcome them as babies?

1972: Botch job deteriorates, leaves teen dead

"Julie" was only 14 years old when she underwent an abortion in New York on March 26, 1972. Julie had retained fetal tissue, which doctors tried to remove with additional procedures. During one of these attempts to complete the abortion, Julie's uterus and bowel were perforated. Julie underwent a partial resection of her bowel and drainage of an abscess. But despite these procedures, she developed septicemia and peritonitis, dying on April 16.

1997: Safe, legal abortion turns deadly for Texas teen

Sixteen-year-old Maureen Espinoza underwent an abortion at a doctor's office in San Antonio on March 28, 1997. The abortionist punctured Maureen's uterus, but took no note of the complication. Maureen was admitted through the emergency room at NE Baptist Hospital on April 3. She underwent two surgeries to try to save her life. She died on April 15.

The hidden consistency in the inconsistency

I've noticed that the people who tend to be pro-choice on abortion tend to be anti-choice on gun ownership.

See, abortion is something that you might disapprove of, but you should let people make up their own minds. But owning a gun? Well, that's something that we can't trust people to make choices on, because sometimes some of them make wrong choices.

When it comes to abortion, personal autonomy trumps human life. But when it comes to guns, personal autonomy goes out the window. Suddenly human life supposedly trumps personal autonomy. Why the sudden flip-flop? Why do personal autonomy and human life switch priorities all of a sudden? It's not consistent.

I've seen a consistency though. It's ensuring that the meanest mother*****s are at the top of the pecking order. It's ensuring that the weaker person stays weak and defeseless. Fetuses are inherently innocent and defenseless, so they make prime targets for bullies. But an armed citizen can be disarmed and rendered defenseless. If the meanest, most evil people are to triumph, the innocent have to be kept at their mercy. And that means they have to be kept unarmed.

I don't think that this is the conscious intent of the people who support abortion but oppose self-defense. The point is that we war not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers. And those spiritual beings no doubt have a vested interest in seeing the meanest, nastiest people rise to the top. And they can't do that if the weaker people are no longer defenseless.

Anniversary: First in a string of back alley deaths

April 14, 1932 marked the first in a string of Oklahoma City back-alley abortion deaths. On that day, Mrs. Isobel F. Ferguson died of suspected abortion complications. Two physicians in the University of Oklahoma area, J. W. Eisiminger and Richard E. Thacker, were suspected in the case. The very next day, April 15, 1932, Ruth Hall died of suspected abortion complications. Once again, Eisiminger and Thacker were suspects.

Eisiminger was an osteopath in Oklahoma City. He alone was the suspect in the abortion death of Virginia Lee Wyckoff, a 21-year-old student at the University of Oklahmoa. Virginia died April 24, 1932. Elsiminger was charged with murder in her death.

That same day, a Mrs. F. S. Roach died of suspected abortion complications. Both Elsiminger and Thacker were suspected in the case.

The next day, April 25, 1932, another young woman died of abortion complications -- 17-year-old Mrs. Frank Lee, a University of Oklahoma co-ed. Thacker, a surgeon, was charged with the death.

Thacker had also been charged with murder in the abortion death of Robbie Lou Thompson, age 21, the previous week.

Eisiminger was eventually sentenced to life in prison for the death of one of his abortion patients. I'm currently reviewing newly-discovered documents on Eisiminger. But evidently corrpution and bribery were so intricately involved in his case that the state of Oklahoma reviewed the entire clemancy process over the Eisiminger case. I don't have the patience at the moment to sort this all out.

I also found this archived article from Time.

Eisiminger and Thacker were typical of criminal abortionists in that they were physicians. This string of deaths underscores the need to actuall enforce the law and not just blow these guys off as if they're committing a victimless crime.

Kansas: Another abuse victim returned to abuser

Abortion Corruption Scandal Continues As Board of Healing Arts Ignores Abortionist’s Concealment Of Child Rape

Stepfather repeatedly abuses girls for four years. Mom goes to prison for allowing it to go on. The abortionist who vacuumed one of the girls out -- when she was only 11 years old -- gets a pass from the Medical Board.

The Kansas State Board of Healing Arts closed an investigation of abortionist Sherman Zaremski, finding that he did not violate the state’s Healing Arts Act even though overwhelming evidence exists that he concealed an incident of child rape that allowed a young girl’s abuser, Robert Estrada, to continue his attacks on her and her sister for an additional four years.

The Board had access to court documents, medical records, and even news reports that clearly showed Zaremski never reported the 11-year old child’s pregnancy and abortion, as required by law.

What I want to know is whether this scumbag abortionist is being prosecuted for having allowed this to go on, and what other medical professionals knew about the repeated pregnancies but failed to report it. I'm just an EMT, and I'm required to report suspected child sexual abuse. If I pulled a pregnant underage girl out of a car wreck, I could lose my EMT certification if I didn't report the pregnancy to Child Protective Services so they could investigate. Why am I held to a higher standard than a physician?

1930: Dead in doc's office from back-alley abortion

Ethel Crowell, age 20, died on April 14, 1930, in the office of Dr. Hans Paulsen, from an abortion performed on her that day.Two days later, Paulsen was booked for manslaughter by abortion. The father of the baby, Uriah Deniston, was booked as accessory. Paulson was held by the Coroner for murder by abortion. Denniston wasn't mentioned in the verdict. On September 1, the indictment was quashed. The source notes "Circumstances suggesting judicial corruption."

Ethel's abortion was typical of illegal abortions in that it was performed by a physician.

1968: Safe, legal abortion leads to death

Stella Saenz, age 42, had arranged for a legal abortion in the spring of 1968. On April 11, she was admitted to Los Angeles County General Hospital with sepsis. Doctors administered penicillin. Stella went into anaphylactic shock; neither she nor the doctors had realized that Stella was allergic to penicillin. Doctors tried to treat both the infection and Stella's reaction to the penicillin, to no avail. She died on April 13.

The California Department of Public Health classified Stella's death as both a drug reaction death and a legal abortion death.

    The new abortion videos

Priests for Life has produced two simple, straightforward videos which use actual instruments and fetal models to demonstrate and explain how abortions are performed, by the two most common methods. Suction abortion is used through about 12 weeks:

PFL also provides a collection of descriptions culled from testimony by the doctors who perform this procedure. PFL also provides a medical diagram of the procedure, including a photograph of the end result.

D&E is used from 12 weeks on. After about 20 weeks (though Pavone does not go into this), the provider of vital reproductive health care services will often use a lethal injection the day before so that the baby rots overnight and is easier to dismember.

Here is a medical illustration of the procedure, which you can purchase from the company that produces them.

And in case you doubt that abortions are really performed that late in pregnancy, or if you're convinced that they're only done in dire medical circumstances involving threats to the mother's life, check out these ads:

Anniversary: Woman abandoned by abortion doc dies

On April 11, 1991, "Terri", age 34, died in a New Jersey hospital. She had been on life support since losing consciousness in an abortion performed in a doctor's office in the 1100 block of Summit Avenue in Union City. A nurse had called the police saying they needed help for an unconscious patient. The police who responded reported that the nurse had summoned help after the doctor had left the patient in her care.

Anniversary: Convicted murderer out on bail performs fatal abortion

Abortionist Raymond E. Showery was out on bail appealing a murder conviction when he performed the abortion that killed 28-year-old Mickey Apodaca. Mickey, a divorced mother of four, went to Showery's Southside Medical Center in El Paso for an abortion April 11, 1984. Showery's defense team said that Mickey was not bleeding excessively immediately after her abortion, but that a nurse discovered the hemorrhage, and Mickey was taken into the operating room for a transfusion. However, Showery would not provide Mickey's records to the Grand Jury on the grounds that they might incriminate him.

It turns out that during the abortion, Showery had torn a hole in Mickey's uterus and severed a uterine artery. Mickey hemorrhaged for two hours before she was transferred to a hospital, where she died during an emergency hysterectomy.

The prosecution charged that Showery used inadequately trained staff, failed to properly treat the injuries he'd caused Mickey, delayed treatment, and delayed transfer to a hospital.

Showery's murder conviction stems from an incident that led several of Showery's employees to go to the police and report that he had drowned a baby girl who had survived a 1979 abortion.

Showery was held pending $1 million dollars bail while awaiting trial for manslaughter in Mickey's death. While he was in prison, local prochoicers rallied outside with signs asserting that Showery was "a good man" and that he "helps the poor." The fact that he helped Mickey Apodaca straight into an early grave was lost on them.

    Karaoke for the rich

George Takai does "On the Road Again".

It's exactly as bad as I feared it would be.

    Hell freezes over

Fox News is reporting on the racial disparity in abortion sales.

The article also covered PP's racist history and the fact that readily available abortion increases the pregnancy rate.

    Wow.

But the article overlooked one more piece of information: After the Black woman is sold her abortion, she is twice as likely as a white woman to die from abortion complications.

Still, this article is a ray of hope that the strangle-hold Planned Parenthood has on the US media is finally being loosened.

Remembering: New York rolls out red carpet for death

Thirty-eight years ago today, the New York State Assembly was one vote short of the 76 votes needed to legalize abortion on demand through 24 weeks. In a move that made him a hero to abortionists everywhere, Assemblyman George Michaels stood up and requested that his vote be changed from "nay" to "yea." George Michaels' deciding vote made New York the first abortion free-for-all in the United States.

I'm sure he meant well, but like the other 75 yea-voting assembly members, he'd been bamboozled by activists such as Bernard Nathanson and Larry Lader into believing that he'd be preventing thousands of maternal deaths a year. Little did these politicians know that the claims were a lie.

The fallout was almost immediate. Even before the law went into effect, abortionists were setting up shop openly. One woman who was injured before the law went into effect was surprised when her suit was thrown out of court. She hadn't realized abortion hadn't become legal until June 1.

New York abortionists were ready. Health officials were not.

The fallout wasn't pretty. With far more abortionists than officials to supervise them, the most egregious practices went unremarked. Saline abortions, which can be deadly to mothers even when performed in a hospital under careful monitoring, were being performed routinely, sometimes on an outpatient basis. Other abortionists, such as Jesse Ketchum, were doing hysterotomy abortions -- major abdominal surgery -- in their offices. Not surprisingly, women paid with their lives.

Despite this dismal beginning, enthusiasm for legalization continued unabated in many circles. Bernard Nathanson had his staff at CRASH (Center for Reproductive and Sexual Health) compile their statistics on complications recorded in patient charts. Never mind that the charts were known to be incomplete and inaccurate; what mattered was "proving" that freestanding clinics could do "safe" abortions. Abortion enthusiasts used Nathanson's tainted numbers to convince the Supreme Court that the picture was rosy. The dead women, of course, were not deemed worthy of mention.

New York's chaotic, grim years of legalized pre-Roe abortion paved the way for the current regime of unsupervised, marginally regulated abortion mills and the carnage they produce. In a way, all the infertility, and the post-abortion trauma, all the orphaned children and grieving families of women killed by legalized abortion in the United States since Roe, have their beginning in George Michaels' decision 38 years ago to stand up for what I'm sure he thought was right.

Time has proved him dead wrong.

    Slumming with Obama

Zombie checks out a little-publicized visit by our populist candidate.

    Cute girl or horrible monster?

Tiny Teenager Stands Tall Despite Her Height of 23 Inches

Standing at 23 inches tall — and weighing in at just 11 pounds — Jyoti Amge is no ordinary teenager. In fact, the 14-year-old is the world's smallest girl, according to the Indian Book of Records.

Amge has a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia, which affects an estimated one out of every 25,000 births and occurs in all races.

But, her tiny size hasn't hampered her spirit one bit.

Many doctors, however, beg to differ. You could say their motto is to take to heart Randy Newman's flippant line, "Don't want no short people 'round here."

So, should being short bring a death sentence?

Yeah, I know, "It's up to the mother."

What if somebody passed a law that YOUR mom got to make all your life decisions for you? A law that allowed Mom to deny you any choices, ever?

Well, that's what abortion does. Allows Mom to decide that this particular baby should never, ever get to make any choices. Maybe because the kid will be short. Maybe just because Mom made other plans.

    So much for choice.

    Anniversary: Mystery abortion death

On April 8, 1928, 26-year-old Mildred Jacobsen "took sick" at work. She died there before she could be taken to a hospital. On May 4, the coroner concluded that Mildred had died from complications of a criminal abortion, and recommended the identification and arrest of the person or persons responsible. Nobody was ever held accountable for Mildred's death.

    Not another Waco

It appears that the authorities learned their lesson and are not turing the situation with the Mormons into the same kind of deadly fiasco they managed with the Branch Davidians:

Members of Polygamist Sect Allow Authorities to Search Texas Compound

They've gotten 200 women and kids out safely so far. They are still looking for the girl who lodged the complaint that sparked the standoff. And in this case, the man they're after has a criminal history and they're actually trying to collect him in a peaceful manner.

I'm not seeing any evidence that the Feds insitgated this one, which may be why we're seeing buses of healthy women and children being brought to a place of safety. Whoever is managing this standoff realizes that you don't rescue children thus:

    Anniversary: A grim discovery

    Dear Lord,
I sit here alone with my thoughts wondering if you will ever forgive me. Why do I continue to fail you? I'm failing you because I‘m turning away from the precious gift of having a child. A child. A breathing, living, beautiful life that I created but too selfish to accept from you. Will you still love me as a child of yours? Will I still love me after today?
    Haley's journal - Oct. 23, 2000

On April 5, 2001, Donetta Robben's 22-year-old niece didn't show up for work. Her friend Rosa drove over to check on her, and her car wasn‘t there. Rosa called the girl's father, Edwin. Had she gone home to visit her family? Edwin later said he just knew that his daughter was dead. He called the Omaha police, and he called his daugther's landlord. They went to the apartment. They found her body.

Though the coroner estimated that the young woman had been dead for several days, all official documents, and the young woman's tombstone, use the April 5th date. So will I. In telling her niece's story, Donetta decided to use the name "Haley Mason" rather than her niece's real name. In respect for the family's desire to grieve privately, I'm using the name Donetta uses. Likewise, I use the psuedonoms Donetta uses for friends and family members.

The official ruling was that Haley's death was an accidental overdose. Her family was stunned as the investigators spoke with them, revealing the discoveries made while looking into the young woman's death. Isolated words echoed in their minds: death, journals, death, pills, death, drinking, death, hurt, death, abortion... Abortion?

    Abortion.

The answers to how Haley went from happy-go-lucky college student to suicide statistic weren't in the official reports. They were found in Haley's journals, where she poured her heart out in the final months of her life. The story of how Haley died begins when she fell in love with Todd. She found out she was pregnant and told him. He wanted her to get an abortion.

Haley was a student at the University of Nebraska. She worked two jobs to meet her expenses. Unmarried, without much money, and with a disapproving boyfriend, Haley saw abortion as her only option. She made her appointment at the Bellevue, Nebraska practice of Dr. Leroy Carhart. It was late October of 2000.

Haley wrote of Todd's attitude: "I must let him abandon me. He doesn't care about me. I know he's only agreed to pay for it to ease his own guilt."

Haley found the abortion stressful: the wait, the sounds, the crude and uncaring behavior of the doctor. Haley'd been told to arrive at the clinic at 7:00 in the morning, but it was ten hours before she was finally on the table, ready for the abortion. Carhart walked into the room, clad in a dirty coat and glasses so smeared that Haley's friend, who had accompanied her, wondered how he could even see through the lenses. While performing the vacuum abotion, Carhart spouted profanities. He told Haley and her friend that he was tired. He'd been speaking in California the day before, and had just flown into Omaha that morning.

After the abortion, Haley felt violated, as if she'd been raped. She also experienced continued spotting into January. She'd not been given a follow-up appointment, and didn't know if the bleeding was normal or not. She didn't want to go to another doctor, because she'd have to tell him about the abortion, and that was just too painful to talk about. The bleeding was a constant reminder of the death of her unborn baby.

Haley told few people about the abortion: three close friends and two relatives. But she didn't tell them of her struggle to cope with the emotional pain. She kept telling herself that she'd done the best thing. But she started punishing herself, and pushed away anybody who tried to love her. She didn't feel that she deserved their love.

Haley longed for a knight in shining armor to rescue her from the prison of her grief, but she no longer felt comfortable with men. She had to get drunk to be able to endure sex. And even then, it reminded her of the abortion. Todd came by at early hours, looking for sex. Haley submitted, but her heart wasn't in it. She no longer felt loved. She felt used.

The drinking got worse. Hot baths and quick jogs provided temporary relief from the anguish, but it always returned.

Finally, Haley could stand it no more.

First, plenty of numbing alcohol. Then, she went into her living room and grabbed a precious photo of her late mother and maternal grandfather. Next, a bottle of vodka. A bottle of aspirin. An old prescription bottle of Benadryl. Haley washed the drugs down with the vodka, leaving the three bottles next to the photograph.

She went into the bedroom. She put her rosary around her neck. She set an empty holy water bottle on her dresser. She opened her journal to the day of the abortion. She lay down, head on her pillow, looking for the rest she couldn't find any more in living.

Anniversary: When killing a woman was still a big deal

On the morning of April 5, 1927, Arhne Reynolds died at the office of Dr. Louis Ginsburg from an abortion performed on her there that day. Ginsburg was arrested on April 18, and indicted for felony murder on May 15. Back in the "bad old days", it wasn't just shrugged off as no big deal when an abortionist killed a woman, like it is now.

    Gentlemen, change your underpants

    WEAR YOUR SEATBELT!

Anniversary: When killing women was still a crime

Operating on a tip, police, accompanied by an ambulance, broke into a private home at 2753 Sexton Place, in the Pelham section of the Bronx, on April 4, 1954. There they found Gertrude Pinsky, age 35, dead from septic poisoning from an illegal abortion.

Police arrested Florence Cavalluzzo, a resident of the home, and Hugo Francese, an unlicensed physician. Later arrested were Jack M. Werner, owner of Werner Surgical Supplies, and Ignatius Cavalluzzo, Florence Cavalluzzo's son. Dr. Samuel E. Witt was charged with referring women to the abortion ring, evidently run by Dr. Herbert S. Wolfe. Four doctors were charged with referring women and receiving a $30 kickback for each referral: Joseph F. Pacelli, Abraham Cohen, Kalman Molnar, and Poon Lim. Francese and Florence Cavalluzzo were convicted of first-degree manslaughter in Gertrude's death. A police detective, found at the home at the time of the raid, was acquitted.

Gertrude's abortion was typical of illegal abortions in that it was performed by a physician.

Anniversary: A big yawn for the abortion lobby

On April 4, 1984, Mary Bradley, a 41-year-old mother of four, died from lingering complications of an a 20-week abortion performed Dr. Wayne Patterson in March. Because of severe bleeding, she had been admitted to a hospital and had a total hysterectomy on March 28. Mary developed blood clotting and respiratory difficulties which ultimately killed her.

According to official documents, another Alabama woman, Janyth Caldwell, died after an abortion performed by a doctor identified as George Wayne Patterson. The Alabama medical board lists no Dr. Wayne Patterson, only Dr. George Wayne Patterson, deceased, which leads me to believe that the same Dr. Patterson responsible for Mary's death had also caused the death of Janyth Caldwell the following year. If anybody can confirm or disprove this theory, please let me know.

Dr. George Wayne Patterson himself also suffered an early death at somebody else's hands. He was gunned down outside a pornography theater in an apparent gangland slaying. (The Feminist Majority Foundation, and Revolutionary Worker refer to the slain doctor as "Wayne Patterson", which is further evidence that he is the same doctor responsible for Mary Bradley's death. The fact that these organizations lament the gangland shooting of an abortionist who had entangled himself in criminal activity, while ignoring the fact that he himself had evidently killed two women, underscores where their priorities are.)

Who is the guilty party here?

So You Want to Be a McCain Democrat

It's a rabble-rousing piece of spin designed to demonize John McCain and scare Democrats into picking either Hillary or Obama, regardless of how loathsome they find whichever candidate gets the nomination. It's what you'd expect. But here's a little gem (italics mine):

Democrats thinking of voting for John McCain should ask themselves if they want a hot-tempered, right-wing Republican in the White House - keeping his foot on the gas in Iraq, sentencing women to illegal abortions, and pouring cement around President Bush's tax cuts for the rich.

I would like to know what bill McCain has introduced to sentence women to illegal abortions. I assume it's similar to the "mandatory motherhood" bills Republicans are famous for. You know, the ones that check the census data, find women who have failed to reproduce, and send insemination squads out to wrestle them to the ground and knock them up with a turkey baster.

The only people who are in favor of illegal abortions are hardcore abortion advocates, who disguise themselves as prochoice, and who -- to judge by their behavior -- figure that a dead mother is preferable to a live baby.

Let's say it again: Prolifers are no more in favor of illegal abortions than they are of legal ones. They want ZERO abortions. The only people in favor of illegal abortions are people who approve of legal abortions as well.

When abortion was illegal, who was performing abortions anyway? Abortion advocates. Now that abortion is legal, you still catch the occasional abortion advocate performing -- Fancy that! -- illegal abortions.

When, after all, is the last time a die-hard right-to-lifer was caught performing any sort of abortion at all?

Among the peopple waving coathangers now are the ones who will be wielding them if abortion is reciminalized. Judging by their behavior, they'd rather see a woman die a horrible death than get any real help with a stressful pregnancy, as evidenced by the regularly with which they attack prolife pregnancy centers.

Who would "sentence women to illegal abortions"? Look around you, prochoice America. It's people you think are your allies, hidden in the prochoice movement. You can identify them by their dedication to abortion as a practice, regardless of the effects on the women in question. It's the people who started a legal defense fund for Bruce Steir when he killed Sharon Hamplton. It's the people who deliberately block attempts to get quacks out of the abortion business. It's people who talk a prochoice talk, but when the rubber hits the road it's the abortion that matters, not the woman who feels it's her only choice.

    Another attempt to criminalize hope

Pro-Abortion Lawmaker Reintroduces Bill Targeting Crisis Pregnancy Centers

Sen. Robert Menendez is one initiating this attack this time. I want to rant about his motivations, but I don't know them. It could be that his only mistake is to believe the lies of the abortion lobby. This might reflect ill on his intellect, but his heart might actually be in the right place.

Let's at least attempt to get a few bits of truth into his head. It's up to him if he's willing to put women's well-being ahead of his politics.
    Who Should We Investigate?

Look here for how to contact your own Senator. I especially encourage women who have first-hand experience with CPCs or abortion facilities to step forward.

I ranted at Senator Menendez thus:

I am staggered that you are reintroducing the ages-old attack on pregnancy centers that offer real help and hope to pregnant women.

I have no idea how to reach you, to get you to think of the women who are injured and even killed because they trust abortion businesses. One of your own constituents, Eileen Smith, lost her precious daughter Laura just last year. Laura believed the advertisements, believed that her doctor would safeguard her well-being. Instead, he put her under general anesthesia with nobody to monitor her. She died on the abortion table. Another consitutent of yours, George Zallie, lost his daughter Stacy to a post-abortion suicide because her abortion facility did nothing to properly screen her or to ensure adequate aftercare.

Young women die becaues of abortion industry practices. The worst that can happen to a woman in even the most unprofessional CPC is that she might be annoyed. Why is it that people like you would rather see a woman killed by a prochoicer than annoyed by a prolifer?

What would it take to convince you to put aside politics and start caring about women's lives, health, and well-being? Tell me, I beg of you. Tell me what it would take to get you to even examine the evidence with an open mind. Tell me how to convince you that the lives of Laura Smith and Stacy Zallie mattered. What will it take to make you care?

Teen drowns newborn in middle school toilet

CPS Intervenes in Case of Baby Drowned at School

    1. What's a 14-year-old doing pregnant without somebody being held accountable? Who is the father of this baby? Another clueless teenager? A sexual predator? Why wasn't CPS already involved?

    2. This happened in Houston. It's not as if Houston lacks abortion "services". Evidently an abundance of abortion facilities isn't some sort of panacea for infanticide. One might argue -- and I would -- that the very abundance of abortion facilities gives the message that life is cheap and that babies are disposable.

Yes, I know that infanticide is as old as sin. I'm just pointing out that abortion, which was supposed to eliminate child abuse, isn't living up to its supporters' expectations.

    Unbelievable missing infant 911 call

911 call -- infant kidnapped from hospital

Or, as the Fark headline put it, "Baby stolen, hospital calls 911 only to transfer, put on hold & hang up on 911 operator. Oddly competent 911 operator handles it perfectly."

The only thing that makes listening to it bearable is knowing that the baby was recovered, safe and sound.

Note for future policy and procedures manuals: Have person who knows what the hell is going on be the one to call 911.
