1972: Bad Practices Turn IV Into Instrument of Death

Eva” was led to believe that she was undergoing something safe, but because of bad practices, she would lose her own life.

Some states legalized abortion even before Roe v. Wade, but this did not make it safe. In 1972, Eva underwent one of these pre-Roe legal abortions.

Although Eva probably had no way to know this beforehand, someone used a bottle of fluid in her IV that had been contaminated with bacteria. Any fluid meant for intravenous use should be kept in sterile and thrown out immediately if it becomes contaminated. Equipment used for IV administration should also be stringently kept clean.

The bacterial contamination in the fluid was placed directly into Eva’s veins through her IV line. This caused severe bacteremia, which killed her. Contaminated IV fluids should never be used for this exact reason.

Eva’s death and her child’s death were both avoidable.
