Deaf baby hears for the first time

HT: NewsBusters

The little guy's cochlear implant was just activated. What's really amazing is that he immediately realizes that the sound is coming from Mommy, and how he responds.

Awww, what a sweet little guy! Reminds me of my little sons. Love those baby smiles and expressions!

So, how do cochlear implants work - will they help many people with profound hearing loss/deafness, or only a few? Have these been available for a while or are they a new item?

Don't know much about them. First I heard of them was years back when Rush Limbaugh got his.

According to Wikipedia,
Cochlear implants work by coverting sounds into neurological waves and directly conducting them into the auditory nerve. Cochlear implants are used for severe to profound sensorineural hearing impairment.

I'm glad this little guy was able to get diagnosed and treated young.
