Salvadora Gines, a 28-year-old hospital nurse from the Philippines, was admitted to Columbus Hospital in Chicago suffering sepsis from an induced abortion.
The only information available about what happened to her is on her
sadly scanty death certificate. Though an autopsy was performed after her death on September 18, evidently nobody went to any trouble to find out when or where the abortion had been performed, or by whom. The death certificate doesn't even indicate when she was admitted to the hospital.
As
killed-by-choice notes, the cause of death was listed as undetermined, rather than homicide, so there was no evidence of a criminal abortion. Indeed, there would have been no motive or a nurse to seek out a criminal abortion in Chicago in 1979, when so many legally operating facilities were vying for her business.
