The Planned Parenthood Graveyard

You don't have to hate abortion to look at Planned Parenthood with a jaded eye. You just have to care about the women. Keep in mind that Planned Parenthood doesn't notify me, personally, of patient deaths. They don't even consistently report the deaths to the health department. It's safe to assume that these are only a sample of fatalities after abortions at Planned Parenthood.

Alexis "Lexi" Arguello was 18 years old when she went to the Planned Parenthood in Fort Collins, Colorado. 

After the abortion, Lexi's blood pressure dropped and her pulse started racing. Planned Parenthood summoned an ambulance but requested that they come without lights and sirens, thus delaying transfer to a fully-equipped hospital. Once there, Lexi was given multiple blood transfusions but eventually bled to death. 

Lexi had suffered an amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) -- amniotic fluid getting into her bloodstream. This triggered disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC, a clotting disorder). DIC can cause massive, uncontrolled bleeding from even minor breaks in organs, skin, and blood vessels. It's vital that doctors quickly identify AFE and DIC, and that they take swift measures to confirm the diagnosis and start immediate targeted life-saving procedures. 

According to Lexi's family, Planned Parenthood did not treat Lexi's symptoms with the urgency they warranted, thus contributing to her death.

Alyona Dixon was 24 years old when she went to a Nevada Planned Parenthood for an abortion. According to a doctor who later reviewed the case, Alyona was "determined to be an appropriate candidate for elective termination of pregnancy with mifepristone followed 24-48 hours later by misoprostol intravaginally." The doctor further noted, "She was appropriately counseled about the risks of the medical abortion and was discharged home."

Planned Parenthood had already seen some of their patients die from rapid-onset toxic shock syndrome after using the misoprostol vaginally. The recommended method of administration is between the cheek and gum. 

Three days later, Alyona was suffering sharp lower abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding. She went to a hospital where she was treated and discharged. The following day she went to another hospital. The admitting physician noted “abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea, severe dehydration, acute renal failure, leukocytosis, sepsis, lactic acidosis, hypokalemia, sinus tachycardia, metabolic acidoses, pulseless electrical activity, respiratory failure.”

Nobody seemed to be aware of the possibility of toxic shock syndrome from the abortion. Alyona died of sepsis the following morning.

Irene Stevenson was 24 years old when she went to a Chicago Planned Parenthood. She developed a severe infection that ended her life. 

Planned Parenthood settled out-of-court with her widower, so no further information is available about what caused Irene to develop the fatal infection and what treatment she was provided.

"Lucy" was a 29-year-old woman with no known pre-existing medical problems. She went to Planned Parenthood of Georgetown, IL when she was about 7 weeks pregnant. Dr. Amy Caldwell gave her abortion pills on April 5. She was dead before the end of the month. She was the first of three women to die from abortion pills in Illinois in only 8 months. 

Just a few months after Lucy's death, Caldwell gave abortion pills to "Luna," who was about 21 weeks pregnant, causing her death. I have been unable to determine if Luna also got her fatal abortion pills at Planned Parenthood or if Caldwell was working at a different location.

“Luanne” was 31 years old and had no documented pre-existing medical problems. There's no record of why she decided on an abortion, or why she decided to trust this particular Planned Parenthood to keep her safe. 

Dr. Rhiannon Amodeo performed the surgical abortion of Luann's baby, at 6 to 8 weeks of gestation, at Bloomington, IL Planned Parenthood on November 8, 2022. No other details of the abortion are available. All I've been able to determine is that she died from complications of that abortion.

The Indiana Department of Health received the report documenting her death on November 23. The lack of a pathology exam on the fetal remains is a clue that Luanne might have died so soon after the abortion that the facility didn't consider it worth the cost to do a pathology exam for a patient who had already expired. There is also the fact that they actually knew that she had died, which would indicate that she died while still under Planned Parenthood's care.

Cree Erwin-Sheppard went to Planned Parenthood for a suction abortion and placement of an IUD. 

Two days later, Cree was at the emergency room, suffering from pelvic pain, nausea, and vomiting. Emergency room staff treated her symptoms and told her to seek outpatient follow-up. 

They failed to detect that she the Planned Parenthood doctor had poked a 1 1/2-inch hole in Cree's uterus before sending her home to deal with her injury without any guidance from them. 

Two days later Cree's mother made this heartbreaking 911 call.

Her daughter had died from sepsis.

To add insult to injury, the medical examiner's office selectively redacted Cree's autopsy report to hide the fact that she had died from abortion complications.

Tonya Reaves was 24 years old when she went to a Planned Parenthood in Chicago.

The abortion was performed at 11:10 am. 

According to the Planned Parenthood of Illinois website, the abortion itself should take between 10 and 20 minutes, and the patient can expect to be in the recovery room for about an hour. This means that Tonya should have been cleared to go home by 12:30 pm.

But clearly something was wrong. She wasn't sent home by 12:30. Or 1:30. Or 2:30. The hours went by, and there's no public record of what was happening during that time. It wasn't until 4:30 -- at least three hours after Planned Parenthood staff noticed that Tonya was suffering a complication -- that somebody called an ambulance.

Tonya was finally taken to a hospital, where she was given emergency surgery that proved futile. Tonya was pronounced dead at 11:20 pm, almost exactly 12 hours after her safe and legal abortion was started.

The Centers for Disease Control published back in 1983, "Deaths from hemorrhage associated with legal induced abortion should not occur." In every hemorrhage death they investigated, "Lack of adequate postoperative monitoring or treatment of hemorrhagic shock" was a factor.

"Ella" went to a Planned Parenthood, trusting them to provide her with a safe abortion.

She was provided with abortion pills even though it was unsafe to send her home. Ella's fetus was not in her uterus -- it was in her fallopian tube. 

This is something any abortion facility should have been easily able to detect through an ultrasound. But Planned Parenthood didn't. They gave Ella the drugs and sent her home with no clue that there was a ticking time bomb in her body.

That bomb went off. Ella's ectopic pregnancy ruptured and she died a painful, frightening, and completely preventable death.

Roselle Owens was 17 years old when she went to Planned Parenthood's Margaret Sanger Center for what she believed was a perfectly safe legal abortion.

She didn't know that the doctor Planned Parenthood hired to do her abortion, Gerald Zupnick, had a history of malpractice. Zupnick performed the abortion under general anesthesia provided by an outside contractor.

The abortion, which Zupnick charted as "uneventful," was completed at 9:20 am.

Shortly afterwards, staff noticed that Roselle's breathing was labored and her blood oxygen levels had fallen. But it took them over 20 minutes to summon emergency medical services. 

Roselle was taken to a hospital and though her vital signs were stabilized, she had suffered brain damage and remained on a ventilator until her death five months later.

Bonnie Kay Hunt was 44 when she went to an Illinois Planned Parenthood for an abortion.

It's unclear what happened afterwards, because the only additional information is that she was hospitalized at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. 

She died there on August 5, 2008.

According to her obituary, she left behind three children.

Bonnie’s mother sued Planned Parenthood for malpractice. The case dragged on for years and was eventually dismissed by stipulation or agreement.

Edrica Goode went to Planned Parenthood in Riverside, California, for a safe, legal abortion.

A nurse examined Edrica and found signs that she had a vaginal infection.

Laminaria are sticks of dried seaweed that absorb moisture from the body and expand to dilate the cervix. They are never to be inserted if there are signs of infection. But the nurse inserted them anyway, effectively wicking the infection from Edrica's vagina straight into her uterus.

The infection took hold very quickly. During the night she became feverish, confused, and disoriented. She was too ill to even realize that she needed to go back to Planned Parenthood to have the laminaria removed. 

Planned Parenthood did call Edrica's home, but her mother told them that she was too sick to take the call. 

When Edrica's condition did not improve, her family took her to the hospital. Though a blood test revealed a pregnancy, Edrica was unable to consent to a pelvic exam so she was kept on the medical ward for five days before she was sent to the psychiatric ward due to her inability to interact rationally. The psychiatric ward sent her back to be tested for possible sepsis. 

Eventually Edrica's boyfriend told the doctors about the visit to Planned Parenthood. It was only then that they did the pelvic exam and discovered the laminaria, which they removed. But it was too late. Sepsis had taken hold, and Edrica died just two days short of her 22nd birthday.

Hoa Thuy "Vivian" Tran went to Planned Parenthood in Costa Mesa, California, where they gave her the abortion pills.

Six days later the 22-year-old woman was dead from sepsis.

Vivian's husband sued the drug company, Planned Parenthood, and The Population Council. 

Planned Parenthood spokesperson Kimberlee Ward dismissed public concerns -- though Vivian was the second women in only three months to die of sepsis after getting abortion pills at Planned Parenthood. Ward asserted that Planned Parenthood had "absolute confidence in this method of abortion."

Holly Patterson was 18 years old when she and her boyfriend went to Planned Parenthood in Hayward, California. They diagnosed her as 7 weeks pregnant, administered the first drug of her abortion regimen, and sent her home with misoprostol.

The FDA approved method of using misoprostol for abortion is to insert it between the cheek and gums. However, because patient have reported that this causes nausea, Planned Parenthood instructed patients to insert the misoprostol vaginally.

They told her to return in a week to determine if the abortion had been successful.

Three days later Holly called to report severe abdominal cramping. She was reassured that this was normal and told to take her pain medications. If the pain didn't improve, she should go to the emergency room.

The next day, still in terrible pain, Holly went to the emergency room and told the doctor about the abortion. The doctor injected a narcotic pain killer and sent Holly home.

The next day she was weak, vomiting, and unable to walk. She returned to the hospital and this time she was admitted. By then it was too late to save her, and she died of sepsis.

Her father went public with her death, demanding answers as to why Planned Parenthood didn't follow FDA recommendations and why they sent her to an ER rather than take steps to ensure that she was seen by somebody who knew how to treat abortion pill complications. 

To this day, women are given abortion pills with no clear protocols for treating potentially fatal complications. Many abortion-rights activists actually discourage women from telling emergency room staff that they have taken the abortion pills, thus preventing prompt and effective treatment.

Diana Lopez was 25 years old and 19 weeks pregnant when she went to a California Planned Parenthood for what was supposed to be a safe, legal abortion.

Dr. Mark Maltzer rushed through what should have been a 10 to 20 minute procedure in only six minutes, tearing a hole in her cervix. 

Another doctor at that same Planned Parenthood had, just two years earlier, rushed through another woman through a similar abortion in only 6 minutes, leaving her with injuries that nearly killed her.

Diana was not as fortunate. She bled to death. 

After Diana's death, prolifers pressured the state into inspecting the Planned Parenthood in question. Planned parenthood was cited for failure to make changes to their protocols for using laminaria to dilate the cervix in abortions like Diana's, failing to show that they had properly assessed the competency and credentials of the doctor, failing to advise Diana to postpone the abortion due to low hemoglobin, failure to administer drugs properly prior to the abortion, and failing to notify the health department of Diana's death, among other deficiencies.

Elise Kalat got through her abortion just fine at Planned Parenthood of Central Massachusetts. But afterward she suffered a severe asthma attack.

Staff twice helped her to use her inhaler, but Elise still struggled to breathe. She started to turn blue.

Staff administered oxygen, but that didn't help. Elise stopped breathing entirely.

To their credit, they did call 911 and start resuscitation attempts. But their attempts were only making the problem worse.

When the ambulance crew arrived, they found Elise on the floor. Nobody had initiated professional protocols such as intubating Elise, using a defibrillator, monitoring her heart, or administering cardiac medications. Instead they were performing their tasks so ineptly that Elise would have been better off had she stopped breathing at a swimming pool and gotten care from a 16-year-old lifeguard.

One facility employee was doing compressions on Elise's abdomen rather than on her chest. Another employee was using a bag-valve mask but was only inflating Elise's cheeks. No air was going into her lungs. The doctor was checking for a pulse on Elise's femoral artery -- so he was feeling the blood surging because of the repeated pressure on the patient's abdomen. Elise's blood wasn't actually being circulated. 

Medics took over Elise's care, but it was too late. She had suffered brain damage and died two days later.

As I said before, Planned Parenthood doesn't send me a notification and a packet of documents when one of their patients dies. I find out about these deaths through the attentiveness and diligence of prolife people who, unlike the abortion lobby, actually consider the safety of the women to be a higher priority than the death of the baby.
